The Marvels.
Don’t care what the critics say. I enjoyed it. Decent enough Marvel film & a nice running time.

The Grifters, 1990 Crime/Noir Annette Benning, John Cusack, Angelica Huston. Hard nails Lily Dillon (Huston) works as a swindler for dangerous bookie Bobo (Hingle) probably the only man she fears. Arriving in Los Angeles on business Lily looks up her son, Roy (Cusack), a small-time con artist content with paltry sleight-of-hand cheats. Roy's girlfriend, Myra (Benning) looks like an All-American type but is a grifter looking to pull off another big-time con. The convergence of the three hustlers inevitably means trouble for all of them.
This film has one of the most unforgettable and bizarre endings. It is a unexpected what happens in the final sequences and you definitely don't forget it once you watch it I love this movie.

“BIG WARS” (OVA, 1993) on

It’s the dawn of the 25th century. Mankind has terraformed and colonized Mars; although, we are not alone in the universe. An ancient race of alien beings known only as ‘The Gods’ had been watching Earth’s progression, and waiting. Some might more plainly describe it as: under attack by blonde women, flying UFOs, and just maybe so. We're ambiguous beings, I should know. Mysterious aliens uncloaked to halt mankind's galactic expansion, by force. The planet named after ‘The God of War’ has become a holy battleground; as humanity fights its most desperate of battles with the latest in hi-tech, military hardware: mechanized combat suits, orbital fighters, and gigantic, desert battleships brimming with advanced weaponry. Up against the invaders ‘The Gods’ of which have far more awesome, incredibly destructive weapons at their disposal; including ‘Hell’, an undefeatable stealth carrier.
Nevertheless, the alien’s primary weapon is insidiously quiet and invisible; a mind control plague, one contagious, incurable, even inevitable. Humans are powerless to resist its effects, which transforms even the most loyal soldiers into sabotaging subversives. Retribution lies with Captain Akuh and the crew of the ‘Battleship Aoba’. If his top-secret mission is successful, elite forces will deal a decisive blow to the alien armada. But tragically, Akuh's love interest is exhibiting signs of nymphomania; an early symptom of alien subversion, in falling under the deepest and unbreakable spell of ‘The Gods’. Its having: ‘religious overtones’; in making for a unique series, if it ever was. An OVA I'd first encountered, in Japan, and so, I was simply revisiting it; one that has yet to be scanned in HD resolution, disappointingly. I just might give up hope it'll ever get such a treatment. As far as a Western equivalency goes, it’s almost like the Anderson’s “UFO” meets a reimagined “Battlestar Galactica”; in along with NBC’s “The Martian Chronicles”, however briefly.
Obviously, incorporates traditional Japanese Science Fiction aesthetics; as like with a hovering or space-outfitted ‘Leijiverse’-stylized ‘Battleship’. As well as, ‘The Gods’ loosely paralleled ‘The Mazone’; as depicted, in the operatic Anime television series, “Space Pirate Captain Harlock” (1978-‘79). Another element that made this OVA appealing, to me. I’d say, ‘90’s era Anime would be my favorite overall, retrospectively; as realized I do tend to revisit era-specific titles more frequently, than I would with others. I had liked where artists’ character designs were commonly going, during the era.

Watched Ridley Scott's Napoleon last night.
Should've been a slam dunk but sadly, both Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix were just going through the motions. To be fair, Ridley didn't surprise me at all ( he's always been an hit-and-miss kind-of artist ) but Phoenix ?!
Bloody hell, you could tell he was bored out of his mind throughout most of the movie.

Enjoyed it but didn’t sense the charisma (dark or otherwise) that he would have had. Thought the set pieces were typically cinematic Scott. Overall, thumbs up but understand above commentary.AstroWarped wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2023 10:13 amHeh, Maybe because he played Napoleon as always being bored until combat and he got a bit more land for France!Thunderous_Lay wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2023 12:51 am Watched Ridley Scott's Napoleon last night.

"Bring forth this fiend of Scotland ..."

The Film
Three witches tell the Scottish general Macbeth that he will be King of Scotland. Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth kills the king, becomes the new king, and kills more people out of paranoia. Civil war then erupts to overthrow Macbeth.
The incomparable Helen Baxendale stars as Lady Macbeth in this 1997 film. Jason Connery, son of Sir Sean Connery, portrays Macbeth. This is one of my most favorite films based on a play by William Shakespeare. Brian Blessed got to direct the scenes with the witches, peppered throughout the story. I'm not a fan of Tragedies, usually. Life is tragic enough, without inventing more of it. But this version of Macbeth is solid and very well-done. Besides ... it's Shakespeare! Come on. There's this interesting article, also ...

A Director's Cut did wonders for Kingdom of Heaven but still, that one was a solid movie.AstroWarped wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2023 10:13 amHeh, Maybe because he played Napoleon as always being bored until combat and he got a bit more land for France!Thunderous_Lay wrote: ↑Sun Nov 26, 2023 12:51 am Watched Ridley Scott's Napoleon last night.

For some reason, I really don't expect this one to age so well... if anything, I think it's arguably worse than Oliver Stone's Alexander.
That one was also very flawed but entertaining at parts. Napoleon, on the other hand, was so disjointed, so over the place, you get the sense that the main character being Napoelon was an afterthought, as if they panicked after realizing how sub-standard the script was.
I had little to no faith on the upcoming Gladiator sequel but knowing that Scarpa wrote that one, too, well... sh*t.
