Your opinion on Vinnie Vincent

Post by cbingham »

Gene says he was a brat. Vinnie says he wasn't treated properly by KISS. Who do you think is right? God knows I can't make up my mind.

I'd say there is truth in both sides.

I'd like to know if Vinnie knew what he was getting into. If he did and he knew how Gene and Paul operated (he probably did, having worked with them on Creatures before joining) then he has no cause for complaints.

both. would be dead in the water if not for him but he probably expected too much in compense. He was the classic 'necessary evil' to transition them to what they ultimately be with Brucey.

Like most of the posts here I agree that both Vinnie and Kiss were using one another but the results were two great albums.

Just an example when Eric Joined Kiss bought him a Porche, whereas they put Vinnie in a fleapit whilst they recorded Lick it Up. Not nice!

On the other hand I think Vinnie just wanted to get himself famous with Kiss and jump at the earliest opportunity and form his own band. This is why I think he never signed the contract.

Based on what others said about him Post Kiss, and what he has become! I think they realized he was a fruitcake, but used his decent songwriting for Creatures / Lick It Up, and then made the fatal mistake of actually letting him join the band. I think he is overrated on here, I like Lick It Up,
and I Love It Loud, but my favorite songs of this era were Saint & Sinner and War Machine and he had nothing to do with them.

I appreciate his great songwriting he contributed to the band. His erratic behavior just makes him impossible to work with over an extended period of time. I am not a doctor, but I would suspect he has bipolar disorder. Hopefully he can get it treated.

Both are true. For sure KISS tried to take advantage of him and very possibly ripped him off. On the other hand VV now has a reputation for doing the same to other people, mainly his fans.

So many people in the music industry just don't understand the idea of fairness. KISS should have paid him what was fair for his songs and in the right manner but they decided to try and make him a deal where they would take his royalities (for am what I understand).

Then VV starts selling things that aren't his and getting money off his fans for product that never materialises. According to another thread on the 'faq he owed a promoter or club owner $50,000 for some wireless gear and got upset when they witheld his gig fee against the money he owed them.

Sadly I've seen this a lot in the rock world. Musicians either plain greedy or just not understanding the basics of doing decent, fair business with people.

I side with the worker, not management.

Vinnie’s no angel. Seemed like a pain in the ass honestly. But he greatly helped revive P&G’s career, & they did not treat him fairly.

I don’t lose sleep over this. I just blast Creatures & Lick It Up weekly !

Vinnie's actions over the past three decades speak for themselves. There's lots of famous musicians that got screwed over by a bandmate or manager but it's what you do next that defines you as a person and an artist.

I would have leaned on the side of VV being hard done by - until he resurfaced and fucked up every single thing he touched again.

Showing up late to the first expo, showing up late to the vault, promising bands that had people in them that didn’t even know they were in them, not playing the solos at the Kruise pre party, wearing that stupid makeup again, saying his box set would be sent out soon to everyone, saying he had a book ready to go, saying he had albums ready to go, cancelling dates after fans bought flights and hotels, being a total asshole to the Rock n Pod guys, doing joke events like that Christmas party etc, that stupid guitar pedal that sounds nothing like anything he ever played ...

EVERYTHING the guy has touched since he came back has been a disaster.

He was a flashy guitarist and a great songwriter. A shame his time in Kiss didn't lasted longer.
Don't know who is to blame for the break, probably both sides are guilty in a way.

My guess is that Vinnie was unfortunate in the sense that he was a difficult person to work with who had just been drafted in to replace a difficult person to work with. G&P's patience would have been slight from the outset and worn completely thin in, well, around a year and a half.

It's a shame, because I think the G&P/E&V era of Kiss was amazing.

VV was a really good songwriter and obviously had the guitar chops.

But he was the wrong choice to be a member and by all accounts was a total tool of a person.

Good riddance when he was gone.

Vinnie has his issues, but I don't think he was treated properly.

I think this is reinforced by Eric Carr also not being treated properly, who by all accounts was the sweetest guy in the world and didn't have similar issues like Vinnie.

Paul and Gene are assholes and a pain in the ass to work with - what are you gonna do?

If you're smart, you suck it up and take advantage of the fact you're in KISS. Ask Bruce. Ask Tommy. Ask Eric.

You can either make the choice to be a good employer or be a bad one. Being better at sucking it up really isn't the solution here. Paul and Gene shouldn't be assholes.

In the case of Eric Carr, they absolutely should have given more to him. He should have had his own song on every album. Like they immediately gave to Tommy.

Eric Carr got two co-writes on The Elder a year after joining. Not too shabby. The album after that, he was the musical focal point.

He wanted to sing and have his own songs per album. He was right in wanting that and they were wrong for not giving him to him until HITS, but even then it wasn't really his song. A happy employee is a good employee - Eric clearly wasn't happy to the point that he calling up Peter to complain.

Tommy is a completely different story. Different times. And albums aren't selling so who cares?

Eric just wasn't that strong of a writer. And look at Rockology etc. Most of those songs it took 3 co-writers... Eric, Bruce and Adam Mitchell. And none of them are really that strong at all. Basic filler tracks.

But he should have gotten some more tracks on KISS albums because Bruce got several and all those were utter filler.

Eric Carr sucked it up and look what it got him!

What did it get MSJ? He signed the 5 year SERVITUDE CONTRACT and they booted him.

What did it get Spruce? He probably signed the same SERVITUDE contract that Mark did. 5 years. No publishing if you co-write etc.
And Bruce could have started off at $52,000 a year. Someone should ask him.

Eric's salary was cut in half in 1983 along with Vinnie. From $104,000 to $52,000 as CK Lendt confirmed.

And also remember.... later on in the 80's... KISS cut BRUCE's salary for an ENTIRE YEAR as his ex-wife confirmed.

Now maybe after the HITS tour or during... their salaries were back up to 6 figures. Who knows?!

But what did being a LAPDOG get Bruce? Begging for a $9,000 job to appear on a KISS cruise once a year.

He could have made far more if he had written a TELL ALL back in the mid-90's.

Did Bruce's KISS connections help him sell albums? Nope.... Union did nothing at all.

Singer made out pretty well. And so did Tommy (who didn't even need the money because his parents were loaded).

I am not sure who wrote Eyes Of Love, but it is better than most of HITS and would have made Crazy Nights better, etc. Peter wasn't a good songwriter either. It was supposed to be part of the KISS formula.

A few crumbs from a guaranteed successful pie or risking it all on coming up with your own recipe. Maybe VV should have looked at how great Peter’s solo career was going before deciding to jump ship.

Ask Bruce. Ask Tommy. Ask Eric.

No one was FORCED to play in KISS.

And what did Vinnie end up with? Multiple failed lawsuits, terrible reputation, no money, no retirement and no career.

By all measures, Bruce wins.
