I'll gladly will dust-off my 1980 mexican clippings to contribute :)
I have, for example, this magazine with an 1979 interview with a mexican journalist, where they talk about a possible 1980 tour in Mexico

more useless trivia . the kiss tour security was even discussed in victorian state
parliament in septmber 1980 . they were worried about security for the fans and band .

Excellent news and a study long overdue! As a freelance writer who was a teenage KISS fanatic living in Melbourne at the time, I would certainly be interested in helping out in any way that I can. Best luck with it!

It hasn't been done, and it's a pet-peeve of mine that there's no book to date focusing solely on 1980. I think it's time, now that the 40th anniversary is missed and no one is getting any younger. Pictorial heavy (no pro photogs) balanced with text.

So, it'll take a village to do this right, representatives from each country to manage that section, solicit fan contributions, designers and artists with passion and those with a current operational knowledge of In-Design.

The grand vision is that there'll be a mass-market version in English. Separately translated versions for local markets plus Japanese and Spanish.

Two Sides of the Coin
Chapter 1 - Peter Criss leaves the band / KISS Album Refocused
Chapter 2 - KISS Unmasked songs & stories
Chapter 3 - The cancelled tour + Mexico/Japan
Is That You?
Chapter 4 - Auditions / The New Guy
Chapter 5 - Palladium
Chapter 6 - Kids Are People Too
She's So European
Chapter 7 - Italy
Chapter 8 - England & Wales
Chapter 9 - Germany
Chapter 10 - Belgium
Chapter 11 - France
Chapter 12 - Switzerland
Chapter 13 - Netherlands
Chapter 14 - Sweden
Chapter 15 - Denmark
Chapter 16 - Norway
You're All That I Want
Chapter 17 - Australia
Chapter 18 - New Zealand
Tomorrow
Chapter 19 - Aftermath (brief, since "Odyssey" covers much)

I'm starting off with a base budget, but the overall goal is for this to be a not-for-profit endeavor for the mass-market edition I'd facilitate. Localized versions would of course be free to handle their own translated version printing and sales with the goal of covering their costs and providing their fellow fans with a fairly priced edition.

It's a starting point...

Kudos to Julian for this...I'd love to read about some of the history surrounding the proposed tour of Mexico in 1980...I know Chris Lendt discussed it...but aside from this...obviously the band knew about it in 1979 and what's the likelihood fans may have some concert posters or fliers for the shows that never went ahead?

Focusing solely on one year in a band's history...That is true dedication right there. Best of luck with this, I hope all the pieces you need for this project fall into place easily for you.

Thats a pity...would have been nice if something was released around November 2020 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the tour but obviously Covid took its toll...

I think we are all hungry for this type of offering, especially from

Nice!!! Great idea for a book. I presume we'll be able to read the newspaper clippings? So many books published using these and they're often printed too small to read?

That’s the intention for including them. Trying to maximize cropping/scale for maximum use of page real estate in conjunction with unit pricing. Might need to wear ya specs. But if I can read ‘em in this rough demo…

Of course I know it will never happen but a duo interview with Vini Poncia and Paul Stanley is my wet dream. Talking about the songwriting, arrangements etc. of Unmasked. Especially how Paul felt the collaboration with Poncia helped him develop as a songwriter (if at all...).

I can only use scans of items that folk actually own, else I have to track down the original owner for permission (and most internet pix are low-res and unsuitable for print).

Yup. Never happen for a fan project, and even then... I emailed Vini every year for 20 years requesting an interview. Never and "No," nor a "Fuck off and leave me alone..." So I guess there's still a chance! Nah, I gave up.

Have you tried an old-fashioned handwritten letter? 79 year old Vini might appreciate that much more than an e-mail.

Regarding the cancelled tour in Mexico in 1980:
Here's the cover of a special issue from the mexican mag "Conecte" (our mexican version of Creem), with all about the supposed KISS concerts in Mexico City for the dates of August 9, 10 and 11th 1980
Image

Everything was supposed to be set, between mexican promoters and Aucoin Mgt, and it was confirmed by the band in an interview from July 1970 (I placed an image from the cover of that mag in this thread). And supposedly all fell apart because the strict conservative mexican goverment from the 80's refused to give permission.

The white globes in the cover from the image say the following:
- "Exclusive iInterview with organizers"
- "Worldwide debut from their new drummer" (interestingly, it looked like this gigs would've been Carr's debut)
- "They will play Guadalajara and Monterrey too" (Two major common cities besides Mexico City where famous bands play)
- "Show will be in the INDE Stadium" (That place turned into a baseball stadium and nowadays is the famous Foro Sol, where lots of bands - KISS included in 1999 - have played)
- "40 tons of stage equipment!"

I bought your Solo Albums, The Elder and Crazy Nights focus books (along with the Take It Off: Unmasked Years book) off Amazon back in late June and they arrived the day before my wedding. Took two of them with me and read both on honeymoon, finishing one in my downtime. Absolutely excellent reads. Gave me a bit of a different perspective and a newfound respect for the Elder and a bit more of a liking for Crazy Nights in the process. Whenever this one is done I will be buying it for sure!

Unfortunately the only thing I think I can contribute is some pics of the People's Magazine introducing Eric Carr since I inherited an original copy from my uncle along with the KISS The Real Story book. Wish I could contribute more...

Mag ends as the transition into the "Elder" project takes place. What I didn't do in "Odyssey" was support some of the narrative with the visual evidence, so I've crafted a visual/text segue that might explain a few things...
