Drum Teacher Reacts to Peter Criss

Post by Bandit1974 » Sat May 23, 2020 12:46 pm

Not sure if this has been posted before, but this is the first time I have ever seen this video of a drum teacher reacting to and analyzing Peter Criss.

He admits to not being a KISS fan, but he seemed to like the drum solo well enough and was even a bit surprised a few times:

Hmm. Perhaps he is 'somebody' in drum world. But I agree that credibility is quite low.

At least he was positive. Though really didn't say anything. :D

You've gotta be someone who became a fan in the mid-80s or later!

Pathetic trashing a legend like Peter!

I don't know why a KISS fan would dislike this video. A drum teacher who's unfamiliar with Peter watched and had a positive impression.

I think the objection is to people "reacting" to something for some kind of shallow internet attention/popularity, which perpetuates our shitty narcissistic culture.

I think this guy was reluctant to critique Peter due to his ' thoughts ' of the band but you could tell he was pleasantly surprised by his solo.

Sure looked like he was getting into it.

The drum teacher looked like he was having fun watching it. But then you could also tell he thought it was very basic.

That's fine. Not something I have not heard about Pete before. I enjoy him immensely. Everyone is different. I listen to music to enjoy it if it sounds good, not to break it down technically. In the end, if I enjoy how it sounds that is all that matters to me.

I get what you're saying and I agree when it comes to a lot of Youtube videos. However, I do find it fun to watch someone discover something I like and see them walk away with a good impression.

I think you don't get to appreciate Peter only with a solo.. like with Ringo.. Ringo maybe can't do a technically impressive solo, but the taste, the creativity to come up with a hook like in "Come Together", that's his strengh

I would love to hear the famous Strange Ways solo thou

He seemed very impressed with Peter keeping both the hi hat and bass drum in time together. Doing both at the same time requires some skill and I think this guy acknowledged that in a way. Some people say that Peter was limited in his skills, but to paraphrase Paul "It was great when he was great" and Peter was not without his abilities.

Yes he seemed to enjoy watching Peter. As a drummer many, many years ago I was never able to keep time with the hi-hat like that myself. At least not non stop like that. Peter loved using shuffles too, so did I. The good old "Purdy shuffle" is fun to do and was used a lot back in the day. Peter was good. He was no Neil Peart or Carl Palmer but he was good.

That has been something I have laughed at here for years , The Music Luminaries here , who try to analyze very simple , very basic rock and roll. It was never intended to be anything other than what it is. And to choose this band to be a pseudo-music expert and analyze chords and progression and more utter bullshit is actually very ironic , if not very funny. It is rock and roll and very basic.

Rock and roll is indeed very simple music (in comparison to some other genres). Like the Stones sang, "I know it's only rock and roll but I like it." It is still my favorite genre!

I love Peter`s alive ! tour drum solo ! it`s awesome , basic or not , it`s fun to listen to . same as Ace`s guitar solos which are very noise , and eh not very good musically speaking , but they are funny as hell , and that`s cool to me .

Peter was a great drummer, and he also had a great voice and was willing to sing on records. PERIOD. Why can't that ever be said without diminishing his abilities by comparing him to other drummers?

KISS wanted to be like the Beatles, and they got their Ringo Starr with Peter Criss.

Why is it that damn near every time Peter's abilities are acknowledged in a positive light, some PRICK has to come along and piss on the parade by comparing him to Neil Peart, or John Bonham, Carl Palmer? Those guys are also great, but they are just drummers who can't sing worth a shit. They would never work in a band like The Beatles, or KISS, or The Eagles.

Drummers often get criticized. It is not just a Peter/KISS thing. Drummers are often the butt of band jokes. I think this is unfair and unfortunate. Drummers play a HUGE role in music.

"Prick"? Hey "genius" everyone knows people like Peart and Palmer are far better drummers that Criss, that doesn't mean I was knocking Criss. Take your thumb out of your ass. I said he's a good drummer. I like him better than Carr or Singer actually. Try to relax a bit Sparky. Maybe take a nap or something.

If everyone already knows that "Peart and Palmer are far better drummers" than Peter Criss, what was your intention in bringing that up other than to put Peter in his place?

Up until you came along, the responses on this thread were positive. Thanks for being the one to point out and remind us that - even though he may have gotten a good response from an actual drum teacher - Peter Criss really isn't as good as other drummers.

I hope you sleep well tonight, Prick.

Truth!
Rock and roll is indeed very simple music (in comparison to some other genres). Like the Stones sang, "I know it's only rock and roll but I like it." It is still my favorite genre!
Agreed !

LOL! Drama much? Wow! I pointed out 2 better drummers. SO FUCKING WHAT??? That doesn't mean I think he sucks. Like I said, I LIKE HIM as a drummer.

For every "somebody", whether a musician or athlete, there is probably 100 or 1,000 "nobodies" out in the world who have more talent.

Being known or not doesn't decrease your skill set.

KISS is our favorite band, but we should be able to admit that all it would have taken is one decision that was made differently back in the day for things to have turned out much differently. They could easily be "nobodies" too in that case.

The drum solo in a concert was something all the groups were doing. I have a Grand Funk album with the song Mark Says It's Alright. They did a drum solo probably before Peter did and other bands too.
