I doubt any of the mentioned producers would have wanted to work with KISS. First off, their drummer didnt seem to have the chops, and their guitar play was AWOL at times. Secondly, the band didnt really have a track record for writing great songs. They aren't terrible, but they weren't anywhere near the quality of what Aerosmith, Van Halen or Bon Jovi were putting out. Lastly, after ALIVE KISS could probably have chosen whichever top tier producer they wanted, and they picked a good one with Ezrin. I think he did a brilliant job on Destroyer. For some reason they weren't happy with the result and they reverted to Eddie Kramer for the next few albums. I think by 1981, with the band's trajectory nosediving, none of the good producers would have touched them. KISS was perceived as a novelty act, and it just appeared that the novelty was over. Even a great album at that point would likely have been panned because there was just such an anti-KISS sentiment at the time.

Good call. I was actually thinking of Angel's first couple of albums and the sound on those are so lush compared to what KISS was doing. Obviously, KISS had the big success regardless. I just looked up that producer's (Derek Lawrence) other work (Deep Purple et al) and found out he died only last week.
Wishbone Ash, too.

Genuinely great stuff.

Or click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLNoEp-pLZY

This sounds amazing.

You know, I've heard of Wishbone Ash, and that album cover is as iconic as they come, but that's the first time I've ever knowingly listened to them. That's definitely an album to search out. Cheers, TL!

I sound like a broken record.

--> LENNY KRAVITZ <--

Just listen to "Are you gonna go my way" "Rock and roll is dead" (the whole circus album) or his version of "Deuce" with Stevie.
It would be a match made in heaven ...

Maybe in 1979 if he had produced Dynasty or in 1980 Unmasked...

and someone said that would have guaranteed KISS a #1. Not necessarily. Even Def Lep diamond selling Pyromania didn't hit #1 in the US

The producer I would have liked to have seen them work with is ANDY JOHNS

Phil Wainman for their first few albums.
Dieter Dirks for their 80s metal albums.

For me, it's Bob Rock. I'm not even sure if he was ever considered. When Rock hit the sweetspot…. It was sooo good. I always felt for straight ahead mainstream rock sound, you cannot beat Dr. Feelgood or the Black Album. I would love to think KISS may have captured their true desired studio sound had it been.

Rick Rubin. Original 4 only. Kinda like he did for The Cult on “Electric”. Light on the overdubs.

Hmmm.... maybe Tom Werman at some point in the 70s (Dynasty, perhaps?).

In the 80s, Max Norman.

However, I agree with the poster who said Michael James Jackson should've done more albums with them. His work is top notch. 8)

70's - Ted Templeman/Jack Douglas

80's - Max Norman/Bob Rock/Tom Werman

90's - Rick Rubin/Steve Albini/ Butch Vig

2000 - Julian Raymond (Cheap Trick)/Lenny Kravitz/ John Shanks (VH)

Jack Douglas.

Honestly I think they should have just stuck with Ezrin permanently after Destroyer. Imagine that level of songwriting throughout the rest of the 70s. EVERY album would have had four or five stone cold classics on it like Destroyer, compared to the one or two we got. They didn’t all need to be over-orchestrated like Destroyer was. Most of the Alice Cooper albums he did aren’t over orchestrated.

And in the 80s - just stick with VV and MJJ producing. I don’t know why they kept jettisoning the very things that worked the best for them.

Along with several names mentioned earlier like Mutt and Ted T...and wishing MJJ and Kiss kept working together... I’m going to pull a name out of left field and say Butch Vig. Even if you set aside his work with Nirvana and Garbage, his work on Foo Fighters “Wasting Light” was friggin’ amazing. A great sounding album, and it was an ANALOG garage recording.

Ron Nevison would have been an excellent choice to produce Love Gun. Loved his production on UFO's Obsession. Not so much on Crazy Nights though...

That's why I stated producer for Love Gun in 1977 as per his then current work with UFO. Not the later Ozzy and KISS compressed 80s Era production he did 😊

How about Rick Rubin? Could he have succeeded in making Ace & Peter meditate? On the other hand, Bill Ward wasn't allowed to play on Black Sabbath's 13, so that wouldn't bode well for Pete.

Albini. He would have helmed a KISS sound akin to the first three albums, which is where many listeners seem to deem KISS at their best. He would have allowed them to be who they were while getting a deadly, straight-forward, even mean hard rock album out of them.

Almost came in here to say Jack as well, but revised after settling on someone else. Jack was one of those producers who, like Ezrin, could help the band refine their writing.

If they had decided to make a heavy rock/metal album in 1980, Martin Birch would have done them right.

Based on his track record with artists from all genres I would've loved to see what Mutt Lange could've done with KISS in the late 80s to early 90s. It would've driven Paul nuts to have someone like him in control but ultimately I think he would've given them the accolades that Paul has always craved (#1 album and potentially a #1 single).

Out of left field - Mike Chapman. Circa 79/80.
