Ace most confident member?

Post by Mackemkiss » Thu Mar 26, 2020 4:18 am

When you watch this Australian show from 1980 its like Ace is the most confident, even comes across as the leader of the band! Maybe it's because he could have been hammered back then? I dunno, what do you think?

Cool clip - still think it's obvious that KISS is a Gene & Paul-run affair.......

Gene seems most confident to me, but I'm noticing that both he and Paul defer to Ace, often, to answer things. I believe that this is due to the mere fact of where Ace was standing -- nearest to Eric, the new guy. It looks like they are trying to use Ace to emphasize Eric, to me. But I do like their answers regarding their makeup personas. Paul with his, ... I just like stars" and Gene with his, "it's nothing," (it's just paint). No weird, pretentious responses ...

That's the confidence that comes from booze and coke - and remember that Ace would still have been basking in the glory of his solo album success.

What is very telling is Ace's facial/eyes reaction when the interviewer asks about Peter quitting the band.

He's a little tipsy, but what really makes him stand out is the amount of white on his costume really.

Confidence? Maybe.

I think not giving a shit and confidence can sometimes be seen as one in the same. Oddly, both respectable character traits (flaws).

Confidence doesn't look for drinking and drugs, Ace will be the first to tell you that.
Apart from the nervousness of a 23-4 year old KID on Mike Douglas show me one time Gene ever looked remotely "nervous"

Also this was a huge transition point at the time for the band, Gene and Paul were unsure of what was going to happen now they have Eric.
Ace was just along for the ride still

He's the most charismatic in those clips by far. Paul seems a bit lost, Gene doesn't have his witty brain switched on and is just sticking his tongue out and Eric is ok but kind of sweet and nervous.

First time Gene, Paul chartering into new terrority in a foreign country with a new member no ones seen.
Ace just on anything he could get here.

Lets call Paul and Gene apprehensive here, Ace loaded and Eric well a fox in headlights still!

Ace gained a massive amount of confidence in the 79-80 era.

It wasn't to last....

1977 - Ace gets his first vocal - "Shock Me" - on the Love Gun album.

1978 - Ace's solo album was the highest seller of the four.

1979 - Ace sings 4 songs on Dynasty, second only to Paul.

1980 - Ace sings 3 songs on Unmasked, the same number of songs as Gene.

So yes, he may have indeed been a bit more confident in his abilities. And he liked the new drummer, Eric Carr. But Eric didn't get a vote in the band, so it wasn't going to last.

It's too bad it all came crashing down only a year later with The Elder.

Ace had 3 on DYNASTY (same as Paul) but your point is spot on about his growth as a lead vocalist during that period. 8)

Absolutely. Paul's machismo/arrogant/confrontational personality and Gene's egomaniacal/pseudo-intellectual/asshole personality are both born out of tremendous amounts of underlying insecurity. Not that Ace has never been an asshole/doesn't have an ego himself, but at the end of the day, Ace is just Ace, and he's content with that. Paul and Gene are perpetually portraying characters.

I guess it was just the truth. I remember reading an interview from around that time where Eric said he wasn’t a fan of the band as such but admired their work ethic and the effort they put in to their live shows. So it wasn’t a secret.

yeah, I meant during that introduction era, not this interview in particular.. I would think Paul specially would have had him say he always wanted to be in the band, and already felt part of the family and if you believe strong enough and live to win and blah blah

Yeah fair point. Especially when you see KISS at that point were trying to appeal to more people and project this more wholesome image. But then if they were ok with having Ace visibly drunk during this interview, same as he was on Tom Snyder a year earlier, then clearly they weren't all that concerned with the finer details!

Unnatural and unrehearsed I think best describes this clip. They appear in discomfort definitely having to ad-lib thinking on their feet. They seem to all cope with nervous laughter playing game of hot potato. At one point I recall Gene for millisecond being furious with Eric saying to him don't fucking do that or something to that effect. No doubt the stress of appearing human and vulnerable was getting to Gene that night.

Also remember how long it took, and how difficult it was for Eddie Kramer to get Ace to record the Shock Me vocals. It wasn’t like Mr Confident, Ace, walked in they hit record and an undiscovered vocal talent was realized. It was very difficult to get done. But yes, with time and practice you get better at any skill - thereby breeding confidence based on experience.

Ace was riding high on his 78 solo album....his album demolished the ofher guys records...

He finally felt like he was not under Gene and Paul’s scrutiny and Gene and Paul started to respect Ace ....you can see it in interviews.

Strangely Ace would self destruct 2 years later..or he just got sick of it all.
