Is Dave the ideal opener for Kiss at this point?

Post by Yiggity » Thu Feb 13, 2020 5:13 pm

I think so. Realistically at least. Poison and Ted were great as well. Fun party rock songs that everybody knows and sings a long to. Motley or Skid Row to a lesser extent. The songs are a little more angry. Doesnt flow as much.
I remember thinking how great Poison was for opening the RTN tour. Fun songs. Make fun of them if you will but everyone was singing along and the energy was up. That's when I realized that that type of band is the best opener.
I've always wanted a Kiss/Alice tour as many here do as well. I still do but his songs are deeper, darker. They have more levels. I'd still enjoy it but party rock, like VH songs work the best IMO.
What say you?

Having just watched Dave open for them, I have to admit how well the crowd seemed to respond. They were definitely into what Dave was laying down and in turn, that energized him. By the time Dave left the stage, people were on their feet, in a great mood and hyped for KISS. Nostalgic party rock openers for KISS do work well.

Yeah I’d take a classic rock act like this over a newer band. It’s just a better fit in my opinion. That’s why I think they initially went for the painter. He did his art to We Will Rock You, Back In Black, Sweet Home Alabama and other all time classics. They were thinking the soundtrack would get the audience energized for the main event. But nothing beats live music I guess.

Yeah even I would consider buying a ticket. Probably leave after Dave, but still.

Other ones that would work would be Cheap Trick or Whitesnake. Coverdale sounds just as bad as Paul now unfortunately.

Yea my buddy mentioned him & i going just to catch Dave & then split, until I pointed out if we buy tix, the $$ is going to Gene & Paul, not Dave & I ain't paying to contribute to lipsynching or this version of Kiss ever!

I'd still say Alice and KISS would be killer! Although the AC band would fuckin' mop the floor with KISS.

I've just come home from seeing Alice tonight with Airbourne and MC50 as support.

Top notch band, great production. Think he should continue headlining while he can.

Again, great show.

That’s some major cynicism right there lol.

I’ve said from the start it should have been Cheap Trick

I'll never figure out why Cheap Trick never opened for KISS past the 70s. Maybe they demanded too high a price.

That would be a dream bill.

As others have said I'd have loved to see Cheap Trick in that spot. But Dave is good choice, better than many of the others I've seen.

I'm not sure what the "ideal" is though either, everyone has their own ideas on that.

According to Rick Neilsen, Gene wants to pay CT the same amount they received in 1977.
Robin Zander said he would have loved to have opened for KISS on this tour.

No way is Dave getting 200k for a show that will likely gross a million or just over.

Wish he was, he could use Vai and the EEAS band for that.

Obviously. I kid.

I would bet he’s making in the 25-35k range per show but that’s honestly just a guess

Why do people flip the script and say they’re kidding after they think about something and change their mind? That’s not kidding. Dotty von Dotson does the same thing when he gets corrected on something.

At first people were skeptical about DLR but it seems the opinions are now favorable. The fans are going berserk and like many of you have stated. It gets the crowd amped up and ready for KISS.

Ideal? Don't know.
But he's good, still at least a resemblance of rock'n'roll greatness.

On paper it's a great idea but in reality, probably at least half the crowd wouldn't really know much about them. Sure they're fun.
Most of the crowd is familiar with VH and Poison songs though.

Dave is ideal, because he signs live but badly, so Paul doesn't feel threatened, he's a big name among Kiss fans so there's a bump in the draw, but most importantly for the concert goers - his show looks like a lot of fun even on youtube once you get past the off pitch singing and get in with the flow of the thing. At the same time if Kiss put Bruce's band to open for them there'd be several problems - Todd Kerns looks and sings like an angel and Paul probably wouldn't like to go on after him, they play amazingly tight and blow Kiss off the stage, at the same time a littlle percentage of people would actually know who any of them are or the Kiss songs they'd play so the bump in attendance would be insignificant.

DLR seems like a good opener. But I was spinning the radio dial and heard some Billy Squier, and wondered if anyone could coax him out of retirement...he hasn't worn out his welcome like many other heritage acts, and he could probably deliver a solid opening set.
