Oh boy it was bad.....

Post by The Silver Spoon » Sat Oct 12, 2019 7:11 am

I live in England and happened to be in New York when the global citizen concert was on a few weeks back and I went to it. Queen was bloody good but they completely butchered don’t stop me now. Check out the below particularly after the solo.

Clearly they had prerecorded tracks and I kid you not the whole crowd stopped and went what the fuck? I can’t explain how bad it looked. It was so out. It threw everyone. Brain May actually apologized at the end of the song into the camera.

What got me though is no one at all has said a thing on line. No reviewer, no fan, nothing.

At some point this will happen to kiss. Can they bury it just as well? My guess is that the whole industry is in on it.

I tried to check if the audio and video are actually in sync (the video quality is terrible), but in the begging of the song it looks like they are.

EDIT:

Just listened to it with headphones. Yeah, that was a mess!

Are there even that many online or print media reviews of the current Queen tour? I didn't see any media photographers at the recent Queen show or their 2014 show I saw. If they're not allowing for many/any media reviewers and photographers at their gigs, then yeah, not a lot of media are going to be talking about it. That said, both Queen shows I saw used very minimal enhancements/backing tracks, if any at all. Only once or twice was there a possible padded keyboard line here or a canned harmony vocal there. Both shows sounded live and were fantastic.

A friend of mine thinks that the audio track of the video on the screen was accidentally coming out of the PA.

What a stupid thing to say. Just because people besides Paul and KISS are cheating their audience, Paul deserves "slack"?

I can see it now: some guy robs a store and come before the judge. "But judge, cut me some slack! Someone else robbed one across town the same day!"

Judge: "Good point. Case dismissed."

Lol.

They both deserve no slack whatsoever.

PATHETIC.

FUCKING DISGRACE.

Glad to hear at least the audience members complaining about it. Absolutely pathetic. I'm ashamed of Queen for this. Which I'm sure will keep them up tonight.

There is a difference however - I'm sure I'll get labelled as an apologist, but I'm fairly certain that if Paul COULD sing, he would be. Lambert's voice is not blown out. So I have no idea why he would be miming to tapes other than the desire to be spot on every night.

Neither is right - but at least Paul does have a reason. I'm not excusing anything.

I think the difference here is Paul is full miming into a live mic (sorry vocal pedal), whereas Adam is singing along to the added vocal with his microphone turned down during that part of the song.

Funny how they both sang live together and now are both using tapes.

I guess most bands are doing this one way or another. It is what it is.

That was just weird, because everyone knows Lambert has an amazing voice and is the last person one would think has to lip-sync. He's the complete opposite of Paul.

It's more about laziness with these guys now. He can still sing, but any singer, no matter how great, is going to have good and bad nights when they're touring a lot. And singing live is a lot of work. They want to sound "perfect" every night, and using the tapes also enables them to do more shows because the singer doesn't need to rest his/her voice as often, if at all.

It's just total laziness and a total middle finger to the craft of live music.

IMO.

And yet, the brain-dead audience tends to lap it up until obvious things like this happen, then they get all upset, when in reality, most of their favorite bands have been doing this to them for years. It's like, as long as the technology doesn't make it obvious, it's all good.

Really disgusted by all of it.

I saw Black Jacket Symphony in January perform A Night At The Opera plus other hits. Great band to see, if you want to see them perfect the music. Anyways, Marc was on that run. Incredible performer and sounds so close to Freddie.

The fact this occurred a few weeks ago but has not made much more than a ripple (for many here it seems this is the first time we are hearing about it) suggests it’s not that big a deal. Not condoning it, just saying it’s largely been missed by the media. I keep going back to the industry insider I heard on a podcast state that 80% of big acts use enhancements.

It's a cliche using this expression, but "I never thought I'd see the day" when it would come to this.

And not joking, but early lip-syncers who were shunned have got to be pissed off. Ashley Simpson of course, I read a long time ago where Bananarama was booed off a Brooklyn stage in the 80s for lip-syncing. Milli Vanilli (even though it wasn't even their voices to begin with, and now one is dead).....things have gotten really strange.

It does if that's the audio track of the video. That track takes over when the solo starts. The solo starts too early (before the "live band" - including May - starts playing it) and that is the audio track of the video, which is slightly ahead of them, taking over for whatever reason. (So the video still has the audio track that was used to synchronize the video to the song.)

Adam isn't singing that line, because the band isn't at that point yet. You can vaguely hear him start singing that line live a few seconds later. They probably didn't hear that track. At the end of the song the sound guy tried to switch back to the live band and lose the audio track, but the band was a few beats behind.

Looks like some weird technical glitch. If you compare two sources (cellphone video and broadcast video), band continues to play as they played with another complete track playing slightly ahead of them.

My guess: the full recorded track is used by their lighting engineer or someone else through headphones to synchronize the big screen and/or lighting with the band. But this time this track was accidentally played at full volume, instead of being played through one person headphones only. It doesn’t seem that the band even heard what was going on.

Watch any other Queen+Adam show or watch THIS show completely. Everything is obviously live.

Yeah, people weren't meant to hear that track. The band does perform 100% live. Imagine if the song was played in the original tempo and the reference track was the original version with Freddie singing.

A similar thing has happened to Bon Jovi.

In this video you can see more clearly that the band keeps doing what they're doing 'til the end of the song (although we can hardly hear them) and Adam doesn't try to lip sync to the track that's not even supposed to be heard.

https://youtu.be/-QCv5tE4DN8

So no, Queen + AL is not like Kiss. The play and sing live.

Watching two different videos of the Queen clip and it's obvious that they're playing live but for some unknown reason when the video screen kicks in a pre-recorded version of the song kicks in too which the band can't hear but the audience can. It's out of sync with what they're playing. Look at each of them- they all carry on playing as they started the song. Watch til the end and hear the sound engineer turn off the pre-recorded track and the band are still at the place they should be in the song.

Queen aren't miming, this was a rech fuck up.

Possibly. But why was that track even there? It's not like they're going to accidentally carry around prerecorded tracks on tour.

Like I suggested, it could be the audio track of the video behind them.

Could have been a reference track for setting up and sync`ing the lights and screens, used for checking the system before backline etc soundchecked.

Queen don’t use click tracks so they probably use the prerecorded track from rehearsal to sync the lights and screens to. That’s why they had the track here

Awful.
I know Brian May is technically great but I have not like one of his solos ever. Without Freddy they are a cheeseball mess.
Very right.

Yup this is a technical mistake, not proof that Queen mimes.

I've seen this iteration a bunch of times and most of it is live.

Not likely.

If they're NOT using backing tracks then the video source wouldn't even have audio output going to the sound system. Only the video signal from the computer would be going to the video system, it wouldn't be hooked up to the sound system as well.

Bogus excuse.

For those too lazy to watch the whole performance, here's that moment during the broadcast:

There the band is louder than the "tape".

So....
A band shouldn't use tapes because it's a disgrace to music and it doesn't matter if something goes bad live
Yet everyone on the faq is discussing the negative of what happened rather than the positives that it's a fundraiser to stop poverty
Because the negatives are talked about more than positives, bands have no choice but to try and fix them, which may include tapes for whoever, so the show is better.

still can't get what really went on...lots of speculations were made, but it still is quite unclear to me why they would play to a "tape"...
while still embarrassing, IMHO this looks more a "genuine" technical mishap and does not compare to Mr. Stanley's lypsinc.
