I was at the show the night before. Ace was hit and miss.

That opening band was pure cringe...well, mainly the lead singer and a couple of the songs.

Man something doesn't seem right with Ace to me. He's phoning it in. Couldn't make it through the first song.

Maybe it's dawning on him this is the rest of his career. And no more chance to make big money.

There's something about Ace in these last months that does not seem right.
I have always loved Ace but I am not blind or deaf: now he's an amateur.
He doesn't look good, he certainly doesn't look like a cool old rockstar and his singin' is bad bad bad.
On stage it looks like he is doing you a favor.
Anyone who didn't know anything about KISS or Ace would think of an old, incapable uncle trying to play the role of a rocker, but failing it.
He's ruining the magic around his persona.

This is really, REALLY sad to watch.

RisingForce, I suggest these Ace videos stop being posted. Whats the point? There are no redeeming qualities to them. They're just painful. If people really want to see them they can seek them out on YouTube.

I've wondered.

I think the realization that he is finally never going to be a member of KISS again took a lot of wind out of his 'give-a-shit sails', so to speak.

I know he quit (to be fair, he wasn't in the best place when he did so) - but I understand why that might be gutting to a 70 year old man whose band and claim to fame will not have him back ever.

I've said it before but.

Ace really hasn't been himself in the last few years. 2012 onward.

Take 2008-2011 for example. He was lucid, badass, energetic and even his speaking voice was different and less exaggerated. Look at him tear it up, here -

Here's one from '08.

Look at Ace nail the FUCK outta that solo at 2:03. It's like from the 2013-ish era onward, we never saw Ace have that kind of attack on the strings ever again.

Night and day.

Also, why are Ace's shows these days seeming lower in budget than 2008-2013?

Yep, he was 58 and now he's 68.....big big difference.
But that's not the point, everybody gets old.
Unfortunately he is getting older in a real bad way.
Turning into an amateur is not a big deal., because he's not aging well.
But he keeps on playing live and in every interview he still tells you that he is a rock god.
That's the weird thing.
He should retire.

I think he's getting to the end of his own road. Can't hear well anymore, getting older, mentally not as sharp as he once was ... and he even says it in the video, "We just did six shows, this is the seventh, then I get to go home."

He's probably beat. LIfe on the road on that scale is tough for someone in their 30s, let alone someone pushing 70. All of these guys are staying too long at the party. Guarantee one of these guys in his band will have a book out in 5 years, lol.

I had a great time at the show in Nashville and was glad to end my live KISS experience with him signing my guitar, but it was clear that the new band was doing the heavy lifting. Anyone who hasn't seen him and wants to, you'd better not put it off.

Witz--I'd suggest that you not click on videos when they are posted here if you don't want to see them, or click out of them when they get too painful for you to watch.

RF--Thanks for saving me the trip to YouTube. I like coming here to get all of my KISS info. This is especially useful as I'm contemplating seeing Ace again at Brushy Mountain State Pen in August. It's a long drive and if he's still not playing the solo to Mission to Mars, I think I'll pass, even though it would be cool going to a concert at the prison Hannibal Lector was supposed to go to in Silence of the Lambs.)

If '08-'11 Ace was still around he would have replaced Tommy for the EOTR tour. He still had that rockstar vibe.

Yes, Ace kicked ass during the Anomaly era. Glad I got to see him on that tour. Now, I'm not so sure. I'm debating whether I should see him this year or not.

I almost went to this show. It would have been pretty easy for me. I am seeing Kings X at this venue tomorrow.
My first Ace show ever was Nov 14th (aside from seeing him with KISS). I guess im glad I didn't go. I would have most likely dragged my wife, I would understand what was happening onstage and appreciated it for what it was, but don't think she would have looked at it the same.

I started constructing this post with a positive, and here it is.

The show was a sellout !!

Uhrehearsed. It appears Ace doesn't care if he sings or not. He skips most of the words. And he needs a new look....get rid of the shades, shave, get a different wig, and drop the weight again.

Plus the lower tempos really drag down the energy of the songs. Honestly if Ace isn't good enough to play Parasite at full speed should he even still be playing? The songs aren't that hard.

Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley or: How I Don't Care For Ye, Let Me Enumerate The Ways...

* eyeroll *

During triumphal processions, Roman Generals used to be accompanied by a slave who'd whisper to them, "respice post te, hominem te memento."

Ace could use one, from the looks of it.

To be fair, ten years ago Paul and Gene were wholly different performers too. Now it's lights and bombs and not much else.

I guess it's all about getting old really. How many decades does one have? It had to happen.

Watched the first three songs, and I'm not sure Ace can hear good enough at this point to know where he is in the song lyrically he seems a couple of steps behind where he should be if that makes any sense at all.

Yeah his playing was better then. I didn't like his Dog the Bounty Hunter hair but his "one haircut away from being Gene Simmons" look now, is considerably worse.

Gordon Gebert said that John was a fan and shouldn't be managing Ace when he was hired. Gordon was right.

Look at Ace nail the FUCK outta that solo at 2:03. It's like from the 2013-ish era onward, we never saw Ace have that kind of attack on the strings ever again.

His look was so much cooler here too.
Here's food for thought:

Ace then was as old as Tommy Thayer is now. Comparing like for like, who would you pick? Its no contest, Ace absolutely smokes Tommy.

But now? Aside forom nostalgic reasons, Tommy is ahead now.

To be fair, ten years ago Paul and Gene were wholly different performers too.
Honestly - no. They're not that different. Gene was pretty slow back then too and Paul hasn't slowed down much. And their playing ability is just as intact as it was then.

Paul has totally lost what really mattered for him, his guitar playing was NEVER something to look forward to. And I think he's also much slower on stage at this point.

Gene perhaps was already almost motionless by '08-'09. Granted, apart from that, he's got most of his chops intact.

As for Ace as a performer, I actually agree with you.

He looks so spent. It'd be great if he recorded more while he still can and just did sporadic shows in support of whatever he's recorded. He's in no touring shape at all.
