Least favourite Ace guitar solo on a KISS album

Has to be "Dark Light" for me. Sounds very shrilly.

I'll probably get mauled for this, but:

Firehouse and 100,000 Years.

There is no joy in THAT much repetition, IMHO.

Dark Light was probably his most complex, but I'll go with that one as it's a bit over the top for me.

That original solo for Sweet Pain is really terrible. They shouldn't have released that version on Destroyer Resurrected. If they wanted a bonus piece there is so many other things they could have put on it. I will give my love for the solo on Dark Light, I have always liked that one.

Can't believe someone said Dirty Livin', I love that feedback solo...Genius.
I am sitting here racking my brains to pick out my worst Ace solo. He is that good. God, they got lucky when Paul Frehley walked into that audition.
No wonder KISS never sounded the same once he went. I am sure Gene & Paul know that deep down.
My least favourite solo....Got To Choose. It's far from bad, and is very melodic, but it doesn't enliven what is a very strong song, like for instance his solos did for 100,000 Years, Dr Love and Firehouse.

Firehouse. I never like his solo, nor the song to be honest.

My first thought was Dark Light. I don’t hate it at all. It just sounds like he’s playing fast to just do it and it doesn’t really fit the song. Other than that, I can’t think of one on a Kiss album.

It took me a while to appreciate the the solo in 100,000 Years. However, as simple and repetitive as it is, I consider it among Ace's best.

My turn for an unpopular opinion: I don't like Ace's solo on Strange Ways. For my taste it's a bunch of noise that goes nowhere.

I love this thread, and I love this comment, but, wow, I could probably go for a 37-minute Got To Choose solo. I just love it.

It's not on an album, but I could do with a different solo in the live version of The Oath ( https://youtu.be/VAINgNyL-7w?t=196 ), but I do love how much Ace is rocking out in that video.

Remember when Guitar Player had their 100 worst guitar solos list?

Here is Ace's entry at #33:

KISS
“Love Gun”
Love Gun (1977)
GUITARIST: Ace Frehley

Yes, Ace, pentatonic scales are cool. But they only sound interesting when you mix up the order of the notes.

He made the list twice!
#76
KISS
“Firehouse”
Kiss (1974)
GUITARIST: Ace Frehley

Did somebody leave the gas jets on, or did everyone just accidentally take a swig from the same flask as Ace? The band plays like it’s encased in Jell-O, and Ace sounds like he’s passing out during his solo. Forget the firehouse—call the paramedics!

Ace's Firehouse solo is magically spot on, perfectly Ace... perfectly Kiss, and if you don't get it, you probably should be sentenced to listening to the entire Yngwie catalog. backwards, in perpetuity. My gawd.

I don't think any of Ace's KISS solos are bad.

If I had to pick one...maybe "She" :cheese: , I never really cared for it even after I learnt it was lifted from the Doors. I'm pretty meh on "100,000 Years" as well. I don't really like Ace's tone on the debut and Dressed To Kill either. I think his sound and solos were more exciting on Hotter Than Hell and Rock 'n Roll Over.

Can't think of one from an album, but I always thought his solo for "The Oath" on the Fridays broadcast was dreadful.

Original Sweet Pain solo, yup that one is a stinker, and it does sound like Ace really wanted to make his card game.

Sweet Pain is the only one I can think of but does it really count since it wasn't used? I know he isn't the best guitar player out there but I have always loved Ace's playing.

Yeah. Firehouse is the quintessential Ace Frehley solo. None more Ace.

It’s funny people are saying Dark Light as that’s easily his most technically proficient playing in all his time in Kiss. Apparently a lot of the cut Ace playing from The Elder is incredibly good. I’ve only. Heard a few things though. Bob Ezrin loves to talk shit about Ace but he goes on and on about how well Ace played during the recording of that album. It’s kind of astounding when you hear him talk about it because it’s pretty much the only time I’ve ever heard someone in the industry gush over Ace’s playing. He talks about the irony of Ace hating the album so much when his playing during the sessions was phenomenal.

My choice would be his actual Sweet Pain solo on Destroyer resurrected. I can see why they wanted it replaced, but they just should have waited a day or two for Ace to do it.

I honestly can't think of any I don't like except for Sweet Pain that has already been mentioned. But it doesn't count in my book since it didn't make the album.

So I guess I will have to go back and listen to all songs with an Ace solo to be able to answer this. See ya!
