Ace Frehley at Leader Bank Pavilion (9/21/21): “blew away the crowd”

Post by StillAlive »

It was an all-out assault on the senses Wednesday, September 21 at the Leader Bank Pavilion where Alice Cooper and Ace Frehley rocked the house … and the city around it.

Kiss co-founder Frehley ran through a number of his former band’s hits including “Shock Me,” “Rocket Ride,” and “Parasite.” He led his band on Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times, Bad Times” and blew away the crowd on the Jimi Hendrix classic “Manic Depression”.

Looks like Ace is doing well. Good to see he’s playing live and people are enjoying it.

Why that can’t be right. Reviewers are jaded. And in rock stars back pockets. They’re shills and boot lickers… I hear here anyway.

Maybe so. That review is totally over the top too.

Concert reviewers just suck these days. It's just masturbatory gushing.

I dunno.

Ace isn't "their Boston native".

Man I've seen some of the videos and it's really not all that great so far. Sad to say. Just watched some of the Boston show and I cringed.

While we may think Ace doing a straight up FM Classic rock set. People that are casual listeners are enjoying those songs.

Just 2 days? Back in 2008 after he hit some high notes during the solo, my ears were ringing for 2 weeks!

I know he wants to give songs for the guys in the band to sing, but playing Love Gun (and others) as opposed to having his own classic songs is a waste of time to me. I know if I am there to see Ace, I want to hear Ace, not some dude doing his best Paul Stanley impression.

It honestly wasn't that loud at my show on Tuesday. Reasonable. And I was 2nd row.

He seems to have turned it down a bit.

I went to the Chicago show last night. I agree with you, but for a largely Alice Cooper crowd, last night Detroit rock city was the favorite of the entire crowd.

Ace's backing band is terrible. It's just like a terrible bar band of middle-aged dudes. They can't be making more than a grand a week each.

Same here. It really does nose into cover band territory at that point. Ace's vocals are what they are at this point, but I'd still prefer to hear him rather than the other guys.

Wouldn't it be a bit weird seeing a 70 year old playing with a band of 20 year olds? Even with these guys it makes Ace look older and more portly in comparison.

I'm also guessing there aren't too many other places those guys could make $4K per month in cash.

I do agree about songs like Love Gun. Not associated with Ace and he doesn't sing it live so why do it?

There are sound pressure limits at many venues these days. The good old days of 120db blowing your doors off are gone.

Ace has always had awful pick hand technique. He didn't care enough to get better. I don't get paid to play guitar but I'm sure I've practiced more than Ace the last 30 years.

I'd pay EXTRA to see Ace not do DRC or Love Gun, but DRC was absolutely the biggest hit in his set at Bridgeport, as well...

There's no chance they're making anything even remotely close to that. Not even half. The gig may look cool but guys like that don't make decent money. Not when there's a million other guys who can very easily step in and do the same thing just as well and who'd kill for the job.

Fair point. This venue was in an upscale residential area.

Ace is brain dead. He has two other guitarists. He has no excuse to not get to the mic on time. He shouldn’t play when he is singing if it’s too hard for him. He should just focus on singing and limit his playing to solos and instrumental parts smdh.

Ace's laziness is really showing on this tour so far. Still can't get to the mic, more sloppy than usual playing. He seems disinterested a lot too.

It occurred to me when reviewing Strutter that every element of the Ace Frehley sound is there in that song, the first song from the first album. His technique has never advanced past where it was on the very first KISS song. On the one hand, if it ain't broke, but on the other... dude, that's nearly fifty fucking years.
