KISS in Apple Lossless

Post by Four-Who-Are-One »

From next month, Apple is offering CD quality and above (up to 24-bit/192kHz) with its new lossless option. File sizes will be much bigger and the bitrate will be too high for wireless headphones: https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2021/05/ ... ess-audio/

Will this change how you listen to KISS?

They will likely be the 2014 Hi-Res files since it's what Apple has supplied since 2014 albeit in their 256kb format. So if you already have the 2014 files these will likely be no different.

Standard lossless will be CD-quality but what they're calling lossless hi-res is more akin to Blu-ray Audio. They're also calling it studio-quality.

Sadly for many FAQers (including myself) our hearing has probably declined to the point it's wasted on us!

The next generation of sound on Apple Music is coming to subscribers June 2021 at no additional cost
Nice gesture - don't think other streaming services offer that?

I just got an email today informing me that Amazon music is now offering their music in HD and Ultra -HD at no extra cost to subscribers. And it sounds great!

What does this mean? You can't listen to this with, for instance, Apple Airpods?

Let’s hope Kiss remixes an album or two in Dolby Atmos/Spatial audio. It’s coming to Apple along with lossless but only for those albums that have been mixed in spatial.

Correct. But the audiophile market probably doesn't touch Bluetooth headphones anyway.

Possibly, but still weird I think.

Spotify is also going lossless (they still haven't clarified bitrate) in June.

I prefer Spotify.
Better user experience.
Easier to make playlists, better recommendations etc. Weird, because I usually prefer Apple with everything else.

I used spotify for years until I started having issues. Loading, buffering, site crashing. And customer service is non existent. I was already a prime member so why not? I jumped on Amazon music for $3 less and everything has worked great. Any issues and customer service is right there.

I have never experienced any such problems or indeed any problems at all with Spotify. Works perfectly.

I loved spotify. And if I could have gotten any kind of support to fix the issues I more than likely would have stayed.

Shitty that this won’t apply to iTunes. I’m not interested in streaming. I prefer to buy stuff I like....not have access to a zillion songs I’m not interested in.

I am tempted to switch to Apple Music after this, but I'll wait and see how Spotify handles their lossless stuff first.

That said, when it comes to KISS I'll likely stick with my CDs, Vinyl, or hires audio that I've already purchased.

Spotify is only offering CD-quality so 16/44.1 at least when it launches though I wouldn't put it past them to offer higher quality options down the line to compete with Apple's offering.

There are other sites that offer Hi-Res like Qobuz and HDTracks. Though I get the appeal of people wanting Apple to sell Hi-Res files through iTunes if people are heavily tied into the Apple ecosystem. I was bummed on Monday when it was apparent they weren't going to sell the files and this is only going to apply to the streaming service but I am not surprised either. It is evident they want people to migrate to the streaming service and the primary source for Music rather than the iTunes Store.

I’ve got Apple Music on the iPad , sometimes I Bluetooth it on a portable speaker if I’m out in the garden or down on the lake fishing.
When it comes to beer-30, it’s vinyl and 8-tracks!
