What is the most polarising album in the catalogue?
Which album do you think we argue the most about as fans
For me it’s Asylum with an element of HITS
I really think our opinions on KISS albums are LARGELY based on when we became a fan, you will have people that became a fan early HATING the 80s stuff and you will have people who became a fan in the 80s loving It. We are a product of our time, the same happens for the 90s fans and so on... it’s not a coincidence people that became a fan in the MTV era will swear there is nothing wrong with Crazy Nights

I think Revenge is an ok album. Far more dull than MFTE. But that is my taste. I know I’m not alone. I do believe Revenge is highly polarized because people think it’s one of the best. I think it’s easily a below average KISS album. Sitting in the lower 30% in my opinion.

The Elder
People are either obsessed with it, or think it’s garbage. Very little middle ground.
Runner Ups:
Carnival of Souls, & then Dynasty.

Unmasked. MFTE has a very small but loud and vocal cult base. Unmasked is to me ....split down the middle. Half Hate it and Half Love it.

Re: What is the most polarising album in the catalogue?
Well, obviously Music from The Elder, strong feelings both ways. (I, personally, love it.)
But I notice on this board that people have totally different opinions on Asylum, Hot In The Shade, Revenge and Carnival of Souls. And probably a few more albums as well.
Even the original six albums are not universally loved. I have seen disparaging comments about probably all albums. Even if it's details; HTH is "too muddy", Destroyer is "too polished", RARO is "too dry" and Love Gun, of course, has too much filler material.

I became a fan in 87, and other than Carnival of Turds, Crazy Nights is my least favourite album. Awful record. Alive and Destroyer were realised before I was born, but 70s Kiss is the only era I love, along with the brief Vinnie era.

I voted MFTE.
The first Kiss album that I bought, listened to for a month and then traded. Remember second hand record / CD stores? I'm looking at you Summerhaze!
I have since re-bought the CD, thanks to the love it gets from some here.
I still don't get it.

Re: What is the most polarising album in the catalogue?
It's The Elder for sure. It genuinely is the one album that people either love unconditionally or hate with a passion, with the split being closer to 50/50 than in some cases.
Compare and contrast to something like HITS where there's a general consensus it's a bit shit - as ever there'll be a few who see it as one of their finest hours, but probably not enough for it to be regarded as a polarising moment in their career.

Unmasked. IMHO, it's the album that finished Kiss in the US. People blame the Elder, but I reckon the Elder got caught in the backlash against Unmasked.
But some people absolutely love it, and that's fair enough.

Re: What is the most polarising album in the catalogue?
Music from the Elder is the unfortunate standout, because of the very nature of the thing and the intent behind it. So I'm reluctant to vote for it. I read an article where Bruce was reflecting on Carnival of Souls. He noted that fans either really love it, or completely hate it. So, thats how i voted.

I don't think you can argue against the fab four - Dynasty, Unmasked, Music From the Elder, Carnival Of Souls.

Re: What is the most polarising album in the catalogue?
Carnival of Souls is more polarizing than The Elder for me. I can find something to like about The Elder, mostly I, The Oath and Dark Light. The rest I can take or leave.
Carnival of Souls is a record I've never gotten into, in any form. It's a forgettable and derivative release that probably should have remained unreleased or done as part of the Box Set. The band hid from it in 1997 for obvious reasons. I consider it polarizing because there are folks that have the exact opposite opinion!

Unmasked for me.
It's the album where the American fans got off the bandwagon, and the Aussies got on.

So using your theory I became a fan between 96-99 having only Greatest KISS and DP and YWTB what would that make me?FiveCardStud wrote: ↑Sat May 15, 2021 7:10 pm Which album do you think we argue the most about as fans

I’ve only been able to get through the whole lp once. (When it came out)
I tried again recently after getting Julians book but still couldn’t.

Has to be the Elder. I work with a guy who has seen KISS five times, as early as March 1974 who stopped being a fan after Peter left, who like many came back on board during the Reunion. He refused to listen to it originally, but I finally got him last week to listen to it. Not to my surprise HE LOVED IT.

Re: What is the most polarising album in the catalogue?
nothing could be more polarising than the album that made them truly fall from grace. granted dynasty and umasked lay the groundworks of their disgrace, mfte was the final nail in the coffin that divided the fanbase. up until asylum, in the heat of my fandom, i was of the mindset that KISS could do no wrong, so i never had any problems with the elder. it was KISS, and that's all there was to it. crazy nights proved me wrong though.

Voted for The Elder. And I totally love the Elder (well, except "Odyssey"). But it's a dead heat with Carnival of Souls (which I don't love). Seems that most agree, judging by poll results so far.

Re: What is the most polarising album in the catalogue?
i'm just a tad curious as to what reasons some people may have for voting hth, destroyer, raro and lg as polarising. dynasty and unmasked i get, but those early records? they're the farthest thing from such.

I can only guess, but I would guess HTH for its production, and the other two because they're often considered the best or overrated. I don't think that qualifies them for this poll, but I'm guessing the people that voted that way don't like the album and everyone else does so to them it's accurate.

Re: What is the most polarising album in the catalogue?
I'd say "DYNASTY" & simply because it presented us with their 'Disco Death Kneel'. I'd never seen a more hostile & extremely negative prolonged reaction to anything to do with a Popular Rock group, ever before or since (definitely the most polarizing).
"Unmasked" was them coming back to hang themselves in the closet, but for a second time in a row. And I'd say with "Music From The Elder" next-to-nobody cared at all. One look at KISS trying (& failing miserably) to be early '80's fashionable (while still wearing their makeup) ...mostly everyone was like (that bothered to even see), "Go away, already." And with a terrible album cover (& title) that screams, "Don't ever buy me!"
