Do we love KISS?

Post by AliveIIside4 »

We are all here because we love KISS right? 1975... 1983... 1992... 1996... 2019? Hate what you hate and love what you love but with all the bullshit aside are we all not here because we love this band? For me... yes... current KISS I dislike but I still love the band. You?

I love a lot of what the band did from 1973 until the reunion. As great and cool as the reunion was, it was also the end of Kiss as a band. Nothing they did since is of any interest for me, and it only gotten worse with each year that passed. What we have now is a cover band, and not even a good one, doing lip synced shows. They look and sound desastrous IMO and they have nothing to offer other than tons of cringe worthy merchandise.

Well, duh. Doesn’t our love for the band go without saying? I mean, who would feel even remotely inclined to join a board for/based on something they have no interest in or passion about? I’m a meat eater through and through so you’re not gonna see me on any vegetarian/vegan site anytime soon. I have no interest in or knowledge about, oh, greys anatomy, for example. So I’m certainly not gonna be on a fan forum for that. I’m here because I’m interested. Because there’s a passion there—and has been for a very, very long time. Criticism of the present does not and should not speak for the passion of the past nor overshadow it.

Yes, kinda.
I've also lost respect for them since the mime gigs.
I get why he's doing it and would maybe still enjoy one gig but it still feels farcical to me

They are playing in my country tonight (a 45' drive for me) and I'm not going (because of the lipsynching farce), so that makes me wonder if I still love 'm.
I still love the music of course, but the current live band, no.

Nowadays, it's like a marriage we're trapped in.
The love has all but vanished, but a divorce would be too messy. And hurt the kids.

I wouldn't be upset as I am for what they have become if I didn't love them(if that makes any sense)!

Loving them is just in my blood <3

1974 - 1982 = Love it, particularly the debut, HtH, DtK, Alive!, LG and Creatures. Ace and Paul's solo records also happen to be stellar, not unlike Dynasty and Unmasked.

1983 = I dislike Lick It Up with a passion. Cusano tainting everything with his lackluster lead guitar chops tends to get on my nerves real quick. Also, no huevos to the production.

1984 - 1989 = Brainless, unapologetic, saucy-drenched lyrics and music. Their look was questionable at times, but they started to look real good between '87 and '89.

1990 - 1995 = My formative years as a fan. Gene and Paul never looked as cool as they did back then. The band's musicianship was an all-time high. They could plunge into any era and replicate it on stage effortlessly.

1996 - 2001 = Lowest point by far, even more so after I saw them live in Spain. Folks around me cared for absolutely everything, except for what mattered the most: the music. I couldn't even be bothered buying Psycho Circus at the time - my mother or sister did for Christmas.

2002 - 2007 = To be perfectly honest, KISS was barely a blip on my radar at this point. Still my favorite band, but they had outgrown their welcome.

2008 - 2019 = The Alive! 35 shows I attended were great but even back then, you could definitely tell Paul's singing wasn't quite right. Then again, compared to what I saw last year, it felt as smooth as Nat King Cole singing Unforgettable.

- -

Long story short, do I "love" KISS ? Sure, I guess...

Still, the older I get, the more appreciative I am of what these four did, back in the day...

Image

Again, no makeup, no fireworks, no stupid staircases or logos; just four guys, playing some good old fashioned rock and roll. As it always should be.

Of course I love KISS, from the beginning until today. Sure there are a lot of things that I wish had gone differently but I can’t imagine life without them. I find enjoyment with every era of KISS in one way or another.

We all love our own idealized versions of the band. Some are more reasonable in this regard than others.

Outside of the blatant trolls, that pretty much sums up the KISSFAQ forums.

Everyone loves their own Kiss, and this is totally individual to them. I am not black and white about any particular line up or era I like and dislike things from all of them although the Originals 73 - 79 is why the band still exists today. I am finding it harder to find good things about the current line up in terms of zero creativity. I don't blame Tommy or Eric for this but not having new Kiss music is just fucking boring.

Always have, always will. Apart from being the soundtrack to my life they have been there with me through everything; life, death, triumphs, tragedies, wherever I’ve been this band has been there in some capacity. For the past 40 years of my life KISS is my only constant.

Of course there have been highs and lows with my fandom during those 40 years. Like a lot of fans that had KISS as their gateway band, I started to find other acts in the early/mid 80’s that were at the very least on par with what KISS were doing. Plus KISS had the revolving door of band members during that time ; Eric, Vinnie, Mark, Bruce, it was ridiculous! When all you had was magazines and you lived in Australia where news came through very slowly, it was hard to keep up.

The later part of that decade I found KISS were a hard band to like. They had softened their sound, they looked weird and they were followers more than leaders. It felt like you’d see an image and style shift from a band like Motley Cue or Bon Jovi and a little while later KISS would look and sound like that.

Another personal low for me was 1996 when the Reunion was announced. I absolutely loved the REVENGE era and bringing back Ace & Peter and putting on the makeup seemed like such a backward step. I wasn’t aware of their status (or lack thereof) at that point and was e trembly disappointed to seem them going backwards.

The only other low I can really recall was 2002-2004 where they were constantly swapping between Eric & Peter and Tommy took Ace’s spot. It was like the early/mid 80’s all over again. They were in a state of disarray.

Over the past several years despite the fact that they’ve started to show signs of aging and the energy has slowed a bit, my fandom hasn’t wained much at all. I’ve had the approach that every thing after the Farewell tour has been a bonus. 2 more albums (which I’ve enjoyed), heaps of touring, a few costume changes, the Kruises, it’s all been delicious gravy. 8)

I loved them once. Past tense. Since they kicked 'my' band to the kerb in 1996 and rode the nostalgia train in ever narrowing circles until it sank into the ground, they have disappointed me more with each passing year.

I'm thankful I got to see KISS in concert as a proper, functioning group with quality musicianship in 1995. That is one of my fondest and most enduring memories.
