X in Sex, predates KISS song

Post by soeuropean »

Bruce Kulick was producing demos for the Electric Angels in 1988, who had a song called "X in Sex."

That's quite the coincidence.

Ofcourse Paul heard it and went with it. Question is: Did those guys get paid for the use of the title?

And Black Diamond is a rip off of the title Brown Sugar.

But at least Black Diamond is a great song.

Big difference between changing brown sugar to black diamond and using some weird original term like “X in sex”. Probably explains why Paul always acted weird when asked what let’s put the x in sex meant. He had no idea because he didn’t come up with it.

of course he ripped them off, because it would be completely unbelievably that 2 rock bands in of all decades, the 80s, would find a connection between the letter "X" and the word sex.

In the same year, with their lead guitarist producing the demo of the first song? Jesus Christ.

The fuck does “x in sex” even mean? It’s so obscure as to mean absolutely nothing; and you’re saying that just randomly Paul and some band that Paul’s lead guitarist PRODUCED A DEMO OF THE SONG just happened to independently create the same bizarre oddball phrase? Is THAT what you’re saying?

As opposed to Paul hearing the existing song and deciding to borrow the phrase? Doesn’t that make a bit more sense to you on a logical level?

I think it's obvious that he wants to make their lovemaking "x-rated," not PG. He isn't interested in straight missionary sex. He wants to cream on her tits. You know, all the basic porn shit.

An absolutely AWFUL song. Paul clearly (and desperately) tried to rewrite Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love---- and failed miserably. ...

Put the X rated in the sexy time.

It also rhymes.

It's also an exceptionally embarrassing song.

You cannot copyright a song title.

Think about it.

There's a song called "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie that has nothing to do with the song "Tomorrow" on Unmasked.

Or Snowblind by Black Sabbath, Styx and Ace. Three different songs, same title.

Rock Hard is a better song. X in Sex is just pure sleaze especially with the synth sounds. Inspiration comes in many forms

Wait.

Styx has a song called snowblind?

Is it about the same thing Ace and Sabbath sang about?

NOTE: I happen to have that Styx album...hahaha.

I'm not sure, but I believe Lou Reed wrote two lines of lyric for A World Without Heroes and he got credit for it. I know that was also marketing, but still.

I happen to like both Let's Put The X In Sex, and (You Make Me) Rock Hard
I think both songs are great. I have never understood fans taking this band and their lyrical content way to seriously. These songs are just fun, and that's all they are.
That being said I am sure Paul took the idea from the band above for the song title.

Some folks consider themselves to be smarter or more intellectual that most, when, in fact, they are as joyless, humourless and pretentious as both Gene and Paul are nowadays.

On my part, both songs make me rock. Hard.

Right...it just seems a bit more eye-roll-worthy when the song title is the same and it isn't quite as generic a term or title. There is a Bee Gee's song from 1968 or so called "Black Diamond" that I know off the top of my head.

On a slightly different note, Electric Angels were one heckuva band! The rhythm section came from Candy and Electric Angels eventually morphed into The Loveless. Candy's "Whatever Happened To Fun", Electric Angels S/T and The Loveless' "Tales Of Gin & Salvation" are all Power Pop masterpieces and worth seeking out if you can find them!

https://www.kiss-related-recordings.nl/ ... ngels.html:
Electric Angels is formed in 1987 from the ashes of Candy (with Gilby Clarke), Los Angeles. In April 1988, RCA Records sent them into the studio with Kiss guitarist, Bruce Kulick to record a 3-song demo that included “Rattlesnake Kisses”, “X in Sex” and “Last Girl on Earth” that stirred up quite a bit of record label interest. Bruce apparently shared the tape with his band mates and a few months later Kiss released a song titled “Let’s Put the X in Sex”. Kiss maintains that they never heard of Electric Angels, let alone their song and that “Let’s Put the X in Sex” was penned by Paul Stanley and Desmond Child, however, the bass lines and some of the lyrics are very similar to those in the Electric Angels’ song. The band moved to New York where they got signed to Atlantic Records, which label released their self titled debut in 1990.

Deep Purple have a song called “Lick It Up” and AC/DC have a song called “War Machine” which both came long after the KISS songs. So I’m gonna say it’s not a thing. 8)

Of course you don't have to pay for using the same song title. It wouldn't make any sense. And the world is full of songs with the same title.

But I don't doubt for a second that Paul might have gotten the idea for Let's Put the X in Sex from this song.

Wait wait wait... maybe I’m not understanding you guys correctly but it seems like maybe most in this thread aren’t picking up on the whole “ex” (as in ex-girlfriend, ex-wife) vs “x” thing that the song has going on.

“I knew her body but I couldn’t see her face...something in that photograph reminded me of you...she said she knew my secrets...then I saw those black lace panties and I knew that it was you...”

IMO as far as silly sex songs by Kiss, it’s actually one of the more clever, title and all. The stalker “ex” storyline is pretty fun.

The meaning is put pepper in your bedroom... put X (something forbidden or obscure) in your sex story...
