Re: Nov. 5 - The Joint, Las Vegas, NV
I woke this morning with hopes that I'd read how exciting last night was in Vegas. I woke hoping to read that Kiss had finally taken a grand opportunity and actually done something with it. I awoke hoping to see that they had celebrated each and every era of the band through a three hour show. New stage. Rare songs. Maybe, just maybe, playing to the last remaining few diehard fans that decided to pay to 1) be in a city like Las Vegas and 2) attend yet another twenty-first century Kiss show.
When Kiss made the grand announcement that they would be settling in Las Vegas for a prolonged run (really not a true residency, but there I go being literal again...), the possibilities seemed endless. I imagined costume changes and archival video footage and maybe Bruce Kulick or Ace Frehley or even Peter Criss making an appearance. I thought they would at least do a longer show and make it something truly special for the fans (again, does Kiss have any fans left?). I thought for sure they'd don the Dynasty/Unmasked era costumes that were constantly deemed "...a little too Vegas."
In my opinion, they blew it. Period. It's common knowledge by now that Kiss doesn't really have a fan-base like they once did. There aren't very many diehards left. There just aren't. But last night, Kiss could've truly made a spectacle of themselves and they didn't. They could have easily played for the diehards and the general seating customers who frequent the casinos and believe the Hard Rock Café is the coolest thing since sliced bologna.
Watch any other act that has taken up space in Vegas for more than a few shows and it's obvious Kiss phoned it in...once again. Def Leppard's run was quite good. Motley Crue...the same. But then again, you can't put Kiss with the likes of an Elton John or Celine Dion or Wayne Newton. No.

You make some interesting points, but you are pretty off base with your rather qualitative judgement on whether KISS has "fans". They do. The 650,000 fans they played for this summer probably grossed more in receipts than KISS grossed during the entire 80s. Whether or not those fans know the right material or listen to all of the bands eras doesn't matter to KISS.AnthonyTyler wrote:I woke this morning with hopes that I'd read how exciting last night was in Vegas. I also don't really understand why you would expect KISS to completely redesign the content of their shows in a drastic way. They have never done that. I'm also not sure why you would expect these guys to do three hours in costumes in their 60s.
Pics looked cool. I hope they shake up the setlist a bit.

Creatures/opening uploading. Helicopter landing was the only other video I shot (I think) - will upload when I get home, but bet others got better anyway!
Enjoyed TAF. Don't think IWMFLY works (too low, but props to Paul anyway). There's still areas I wish he wouldn't go, but I doubt most notice. Those around me seemed to have a blast.
Pretty much greatest hits for public consumption. I don't regret coming.

Re: Nov. 5 - The Joint, Las Vegas, NV
stoked everyone had fun!
the visuals were cool as hell in the clips.
the lasers look rad, and i can imagine that's exactly what KISS wanted when they were putting together the Dynasty tour. lots of lasers, clean looking stage. it's cool. i like it. i like the opening a lot and i like the way the LoveGun and GOT flying bits look.
i have to say, the set list is a little bit weak, but not terrible.
paul's voice is okay in a lower register but the second he puts any real power into a vocal it gets crushed. really noticed it on the COTN video that the admin posted. decent in the verse - though near spoken - and the chorus was tough.
still looks like a lot of fun.

i'd say there are more "well wishers" than fans these days.....paying well-wishers, mind you, but well-wishers nonetheless.necronomicon wrote:You make some interesting points, but you are pretty off base with your rather qualitative judgement on whether KISS has "fans". I agree with AT even though I like a few things about the Vegas stage (Eric drum riser). At the very least Kiss could have created a new REAL KISS SIGN that is not digital. An Old School Kiss sign from 1976-78 could have gone a long way and been enough for me. But they refuse to bring back a great visual that has been missed by the fans. Also Kiss actually said they would have a NEW Stage show. So if it's all new then they have a choice as to how it looks. I give Kiss a "C-" on the Vegas show so far.necronomicon wrote:You make some interesting points, but you are pretty off base with your rather qualitative judgement on whether KISS has "fans". That's because cause Kiss can't imagine what a creative fresh stage show looks like.cwr18 wrote:Because they did not fulfill you unrealistic fantasies they "blew it?"AnthonyTyler wrote: I imagined costume changes and archival video footage and maybe Bruce Kulick or Ace Frehley or even Peter Criss making an appearance. I don't agree with your definition of fan. Just because someone has the money and the weekend free to go see a Kiss show in 2014 doesn't make them a fan of anything other than being able to pay the prices.necronomicon wrote:You make some interesting points, but you are pretty off base with your rather qualitative judgement on whether KISS has "fans". And the HUGE reason why I would expect Kiss to do something other than what they've done for the past few years during a live performance is simply because booking a "residency" in Las Vegas used to mean something. Every single performer, worth a damn, takes a Vegas stay to a level not seen during your typical tour. Believe my expectations of Kiss were lowered many, many years ago when it became blindingly obvious music had very little to do with what they were embarking upon (Reunion tour, forward), but this was an opportunity for Kiss to do something much bigger and better.
The set list is a joke. Sorry, but it's a joke. They have the ability to play deep cuts and truly celebrate forty years and being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and actually embracing what they've done.

To say they never suggested or promised anything outside the spectrum of what we end up getting is simply not true. Paul Stanley seems to say an awful lot of late and very rarely is it supported by much.

How do you know who is seeing these shows? Did you go to any shows this summer? When was the last time you saw KISS? At the show, did you speak to everyone at the venue you were at? Seriously. Do you really have ANY idea what kind of fan is seeing KISS these days, or is this all just conjecture?AnthonyTyler wrote:I don't agree with your definition of fan. Also, I want to know if I have this straight - you expected KISS to come off of a 50 date, hugely successful summer tour, do Mexico and the LA KISS show, do the Kruise, and fly to Vegas on November 3rd to start putting together a three hour show they've never done before with new cues, new costumes and costume changes, and notable guest appearances in....48 hours? People who do the kind of Vegas shows you are describing rehearse them for a couple months and plan on doing multiple legs of a residency over a couple of YEARS. Examples are people such as Celine Dion and Shania Twain.
Kiss is doing a 2 week thing to see how they like Vegas and see how Vegas likes them.

Re: Nov. 5 - The Joint, Las Vegas, NV
I think it's worth pointing out that the first FIVE songs on last night's setlist are relative rarities. Apparently some people aren't satisfied because we now have those songs in... five KISS shows in a row. Ok.
Let's put this into "casual fan" perspective. Those songs are all from albums that either barely went gold or didn't even go gold upon release, and are not really known by most casual fans AT ALL. TAF and PC were singles, but weren't smash hits. Anyone with a casual "hard rock/metal" fan understanding of KISS isn't going to necessarily recognize any of those songs. And yet....they should have gone DEEPER after that?

It's not over yet, but I hope they do something cooler. Invite special guests, and really dig deep into the rare gems. I think Metallica set the bar when they had their anniversary run in SF, with a long list of guests. I hope to see Bruce at least show up and do Unholy! At the very least, come on, Kiss can do whatever it wants, they never played by the rules. They have become so paint by numbers, it's really unfortunate. I'd love to see Ace, Vinnie, Bruce show up.AnthonyTyler wrote:I woke this morning with hopes that I'd read how exciting last night was in Vegas.
No.
Don't care so much for the tricks and staging around them, Metallica didn't have anything special onstage. It was the people and the celebration that made it so special. As a fan it was the coolest thing to see.

Just bring back the old school Kiss sign and I would be happy. Most of us fans from 73-78 would be happy. It would tell us Kiss get's it. Oh and Sam T Serpent wouldn't hurt either.
Kiss had a classic Kiss sign all the way up until the reunion and some one convinced then that the Kiss sign they use know is the best one.

Honestly that set list exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations. That is to say I’m pleased to seet that they dusted off Parasite, the rest was pretty standard. Also I like the return of Tears Are Falling. Has Paul ever done live that thing he does in the video where he uses his fingers as windshield wipers?

Wow - it's really nice that they played more than one somewhat rare tune in the same night. I don't see alot of Creatures, Tears Are Falling, and LMGRNR lately, and the good old Love Gun-Black Diamond pre-encore ending is classic! Did they ascend on risers during BD like they did back in the 70's?

Nice balanced, sensible response. Thank you.necronomicon wrote:You make some interesting points, but you are pretty off base with your rather qualitative judgement on whether KISS has "fans". I also don't really understand why you would expect KISS to completely redesign the content of their shows in a drastic way. They have never done that. I'm also not sure why you would expect these guys to do three hours in costumes in their 60s.
Pics looked cool. I hope they shake up the setlist a bit.

If these dates go well, I'm guessing they'll add more later.

I didn't see anyone crying or walking out. They'll never please everyone, so it was balanced enough. Creature, Parasite, Tears Are Falling... As good as one can expect, and definitely the opener is cool.

I agree with you Admin. That said, judging by the looks of the people around me, I don't think they would notice the difference between Plaster Caster and Parasite. I am convinced the band is primarily locked into only playing their "classics" that people know. That is slightly out of step with what people really think about the majority of Kiss' material. The average "fan" is primarily there for the show and probably couldn't care less, or even notice, something like I Stole Your Love vs Psycho Circus. This residency is a great opportunity to pull off something like Def Leppard did by peppering the set with rarities which they don't ordinarily get to do. I hate to see the band and the hardcore fans, miss such a great opportunity to really diversify their set from night to night. Throwing in two gems a night is in no way going to detract from the average concert goers experience of this show.

Re: Nov. 5 - The Joint, Las Vegas, NV
i think that it's safe to say that KISS aren't interested in being a band for the diehards, by and large.
if they were, the Kruise thing would have been a lot different than it was.
maybe they've scheduled too many shows in too distant a city too close together and they can't make any one thing really special?
i'm not sure. i hope that by the time Vegas ends they've mixed things up to make it really unique and cool for the fans who are looking for that, but i doubt it'll happen.
it's a paycheck gig for them, it seems. which is totally fine. but i think expectations need to be more in tune w/ that reality.
just my opinion.
i'd love to have gone to LV to see one of these shows, but i can't really drop that kind of coin on a rock show and flight and hotel that close to the holidays. or ever.

Re: Nov. 5 - The Joint, Las Vegas, NV
my personal hopes for this thing:
KISS mixing it up, costume wise, in a really fun way.
using pieces of all of their different suits per character, perhaps?
gene in LG boots w/ destroyer top, etc.
or just everyone wearing a period piece costume for a weekend - this week Monster, next week Unmasked, etc.
but it's all sort of unrealistic and just fun to want to have happen.
KISS are very old dudes who are - as paul said - taking their victory lap.
see you at the Parade, boys!

Very nice! I love the duo guitar solo between Paul and Tommy ala "Detroit Rock City." Paul sounds pretty damn good. Thanks so much for posting videos!!!
EDIT: Cool as shit as to how Paul did a wrap around above the crowd for "Love Gun." I love they added "Parasite." Though I was not there, from what I've seen, Kiss did shake things up showise and set-list. These shows could be a test to see if Residencies are the way of the future for Kiss to perform without touring. Kiss+Vegas=Perfect together.

Tommy's "Creatures" solo was awesome!
