AC/DC's Back In Black album is the second highest selling rock album of all time worldwide. AC/DC is bigger than KISS.

I don't think that most popular necessarily means the best. McDonald's may be more popular than a filet mignon. Doesn't mean it's better. Probably just caters for the lowest common denominator.mrtruth2006 wrote:andykiss78 wrote:But is that your opinion, or the opinion of the mainstream masses? And why are they better? The music? If you did a poll in the US to name the greatest rock band of all time, the Beatles would win it easily. The Beatles music is the most known. They're the most popular rock band of all time.

I thought the question was whether KISS was the greatest rock band, not the biggest in terms of sales.mrtruth2006 wrote:andykiss78 wrote:But is that your opinion, or the opinion of the mainstream masses? The most influential band of all time, namechecked as influences and heroes by more musicians than any other band. That would suggest that they did way more than 'just cater to the lowest common denominator'.andykiss78 wrote:I don't think that most popular necessarily means the best. Yes , but who do you like better? I put it that music is very subjective so there can't be a definitive 'the beatles rule them all', because to someone that doesn't like their music; it means squat. (I dig some of their tunes BTW).Frehley's Vomit wrote:The most influential band of all time, namechecked as influences and heroes by more musicians than any other band. I like the Beatles better. To me, they have no equal as far as the quality and consistency of their body of work goes.
Having said that, Kiss was the most important band in my life on a emotional level, having 'been there' during the extremely unhappy childhood and teen periods in my life.
It's hard to explain without going into lengthy detail, which I'll thankfully spare you from.
Kiss 73-80 will always have the most special place in my musical heart.

I think that someone can look at bands objectively and say that band "A" is better than band "B" simply by going with the quality of their lyrics, musicianship, etc..
If I'm going to say my band is the greatest ever, I should have something to back that up, not just my own personal preference.
That said, any one can objectively say that KISS is not the greatest band of all time_ not by a long shot.

Yes they would. And they always are in the discussion. KISS earned that and people know to rank them as one of the greatest rock bands whether they like them or not. I see them mentioned all the time. You KISS fans have this inferiority complex...I've never seen a more insecure fanbase.RisingForce wrote:KISS are my favorite rock band ever.........but I'm sure that they will never even be in the discussion about the greatest rock band ever when it is all said and done.
For example, during a greatest rock band debate, I'll mention The Rolling Stones, even though I hate their music, but I do know their place and influence.
And in regard to AC/DC, fuck yes they are overrated. Looking at message board discussions and YouTube comments, people just wanna get on their knees and blow these guys, it seems. It's ridiculous. Look for AC/DC VS Queen, or AC/DC VS Led Zeppelin, and almost all comments say "AC/DC #1!!!! ALL ELSE SUCKS!!!". It's a fuckin' sacrilege of rock to rate AC/DC more talented than those guys. Bands like KISS can catch flack because they make dumb rock songs, but with AC/DC it's okay because it's AC/DC. How the fuck does that shit work? And I'm sick of all these teens with AC/DC (Or KISS, Queen, Led Zep for that matter which I see all the time) shirts cause they think it makes them cool even though they know only 3 songs.
AC/DC is the most overrated rock band, right up there with U2. I'm sick of seeing a shitload of AC/DC crap at WalMart, all the while knowing how much WalMart dropped the ball on KISS' promotion. I used to be an AC/DC fan, now I find myself not being able to stand them because of annoying fans cumming in their pants everytime they see Brian Johnson gurgling into a microphone and Angus Young doing his 60,000 duck walk. Plus the Bon Scott era is ignored by the media. Which was AC/DC to me.

I recall saying in my original post that if we put MUSICIANSHIP AND LYRICS ASIDE, since there are obviously better bands in that aspect, then with all that aside, are KISS the greatest STRAIGHT UP rock group of all time??Destroyer72 wrote:I think that someone can look at bands objectively and say that band "A" is better than band "B" simply by going with the quality of their lyrics, musicianship, etc..

Yeah, but I'm talking about straight up rock and roll, The Beatles may have influenced rock bands but they were a pop band, in all actuality.Captain Spaulding wrote:You say "putting aside The Beatles" and then ask if they are the greatest rock and roll band of all-time.
That pretty much answers your question that they were not.

Yes the Beatles were a pop rock band. To me they are most definately. They have it all. The music and the show. At their height of magical powers you'd be hard pressed to find many bands that could hang with them. Course, that's just my opinion. You could even factor in longevity. A lot of sacred cows here flamed out rather quickly in comparison. Much to the dismay of some, KISS are still bringing it yet today. Again, just an opinion.

Do I like them better? I've seen all 3 in the last 2 years. I bought tickets for Metallica and AC/DC. The Kiss tickets were free, and I had no plans to see them. What does that tell you?andykiss78 wrote:in what way?rat2112 wrote:No. Metallica and AC/DC are better.

I'm a fan of all 3 bands music. IMO, in a live setting, those 2 bury Kiss. Now if it were based on pure visuals, Kiss would be second.
Actually, the best show I've seen lately was Megadeth. Not that visually exciting, but musically was light years better than Kiss.
I suppose if I want to see pure theatrics, they are right there. But as a complete show, no way.

Nice spin, but you asked "Greatest Rock Band" of all time and The Beatles were certainly a "rock band".twdavis wrote:Yeah, but I'm talking about straight up rock and roll, The Beatles may have influenced rock bands but they were a pop band, in all actuality.Captain Spaulding wrote:You say "putting aside The Beatles" and then ask if they are the greatest rock and roll band of all-time.

Now if you has said greatest "Hard Rock" band of all time then perhaps you could have eliminated some of the bands above KISS.
And if you asked about Greatest Hard Rock Band of all time that wears make-up, then you'd only have to get past Alice Cooper.
So what you should have asked if you wanted to get them to #1 which was clearly your motivation.... is... Greatest Hard Rock Band of All Time That Wears Make-Up and isn't named Alice Cooper.

AC/DC is bigger than KISS. I'm not talking about album sales. AC/DC have no problem pulling in stadium crowds around the world.andykiss78 wrote:I thought the question was whether KISS was the greatest rock band, not the biggest in terms of sales.mrtruth2006 wrote:andykiss78 wrote:But is that your opinion, or the opinion of the mainstream masses? AC/DC's Back In Black album is the second highest selling rock album of all time worldwide. AC/DC is bigger than KISS.
That being said, AC/DC (a band I really love) might be bigger, but I'll love KISS more. The album sales are irrelevant to me.

Re: Is KISS the greatest rock band of all time??
While we all have our fave bands, that doesn't mean they are in contention for the greatest band of all time title. While I do consider KISS up there without a doubt, top 25 easily, possibly top ten, to even consider anyone else except The Beatles (love them or hate them) for that spot just seems a bit silly. Unless one considers The Beatles so far above and beyond anyone else that it's not even fair to count them in the running.twdavis wrote:As a disclaimer, let me say that I understand that there are alot of great rock groups with much better muscianship than KISS, and are alot more widely respected. And believe me, I like alot of different artists.
Putting aside musicianship and the fact that other bands write "better music", putting aside the Beatles, because they can't factor into this, as far as what rock and roll is supposed to be, and KISS are very straight up about it, do you think that KISS is the greatest rock group of all time?? Remember, separating musicianship and overindulgence from what we're talking about, and taking away any factors such as the Beatles, the metal movement, the grunge movement, the 80s hair metal shit, etc, do you think KISS is the greatest straight up rock group of all time??
Personally, I do.
Make fun of me, call me crazy, but it's a combination of everything- the makeup, the legend, the straight up dinosaur rock, everything comes together in a way that pleases me in a way no other band has or does.
Thoughts??
EDIT: I just realized you also wrote "and taking away any factors such as the Beatles, the metal movement, the grunge movement, the 80s hair metal shit, etc,", well that leaves out a lot of bands! namely The Beatles, all metal bands, all grunge bands, 80's hair bands, and Lord only knows how many bands the "etc" represents! It's almost as if you are saying not to include any band that's "heavy" in the least at all.
I do consider the original KISS from 1974-1977 to be one of the greatest bands of all-time. Everything they were, and those first six-and-a-half studio records....that does it for me choosing them. But there are a real lot of great bands that others can make that argument with. I think definite top-tens would have to include The Stones, The Who, The Ramones, Led Zeppelin...

I got a kick out of how you saying "Forget about the Beatles, grunge, etc etc". When you have to leave out or bar all those other things, it kind of answers your own question. I would never say that Kiss is the greatest rock band of all time because I flat out don't think they are.
OTH, they are one of the greatest bands in the world to me and they have always been my favorite band. Where they stand with the rest of the world means little to me. It is about what they mean to me in my life.

Of course I agree KISS' show took shows to another level, just saying there are major elements from others. And actually like Anomoly points out, nowadays they even have a direct Jonas Brothers steal (which I like).Rey Nocturno wrote:and the beatles also got ideas from other artist so??redinthesky wrote:And one may say KISS possibly got an idea or two from The Beatles as far as the stage show...Anomaly wrote:Michael Jackson would like to disagree with you on the live show aspect.Rey Nocturno wrote:i respect the beatles a lot, i know they were VERY important, but to me kiss is the best.

The Beatles though toured at a time when "big" stage shows weren't done yet. So their name in huge letters behind them was actually quite an innovation.
There is no doubt tho' that many modern stage shows dwarf the KISS shows. Not saying they are better necessarily (some, like U2's shows, suffer from severe overkill), just bigger.
