Re: Look! It's Rock 'n' Roll Ep.001 - Top Albums From Fav KISS Opening Acts!
Hey guys - really enjoyed this show & look forward to the topics to come! As for episode #1, I'll give my top five below.
I'm going to skip over AC/DC, Rush & Priest just because they're almost too obvious (and I gotta side with Daniel and go with Hell Bent For Leather over Stained Class....) and honorable mention to Tom Petty who opened a single Kiss show on Nov 30, 1976 in Georgia. Love Petty, but not sure I can count him for just that one time.
1. Cheap Trick - shocked that no one mentioned these guys, but they're def in my Top 5 bands of all time. When they opened for Kiss in 1977, they only had two albums out and while in Color is great, their debut is fucking fantastic. Anyone that only knows I Want You To Want Me & The Flame needs to hear He's A Whore, Oh Candy, Hot Love and the rest of their first record.
2. Blue Oyster Cult - prob one of the first band to do the switcheroo and go from having Kiss opening for them to opening for Kiss - but what a band. And the album is Secret Treaties: Career of Evil, Dominance & Submission, Astronomy ... top to bottom not just a great album, but a weird & creepy album too. (If you like that sort of thing ... and I do)
3. Rory Gallagher - sooooooooo glad that Julian made mention of RG. The man is probably the most underappreciated guitarist I can think of ... just a master of the instrument. And as our Admin said, you can listen to him without even knowing the songs, because he's just so good and so entertaining. Gotta agree with Julian's pick of Irish Tour '74, just a raw unpolished performance with some unbelievable guitar playing. In 2014 Sony released a magnificent multi-disc set of Irish Tour that's exactly what we always say we want Kiss to do with Alive! and include the full performances from Cork, Dublin & Belfast that made up the original LP. Mind melting stuff for sure.
4. Mott the Hoople (or just Mott as they were known as when opening for Kiss) - If you guys dig The Sweet and don't know Mott, you should give them a chance too. Sort of in the same vein, but maybe not as directly poppy as the majority of the Sweet's stuff. I'd choose the 1973 album Mott with the stellar All The Way From Memphis as the opener and it never lets up. Ian Hunter is such an underrated songwriter; I'll put his stuff up against anyone from the early to mid 70s.
5. Detective - my dark horse candidate for this list. Only had two records, self-titled debut in 77 and It Takes One To Know One in 78, but of which are very strong. I'll lean a bit toward the debut just because the 2nd one has two horrid ballads that Michael DeBarres' voice just isn't made for. He is, however, made for Recognition and Wild Hot Summer Nights. Also of note is their version of Aint None of Your Business, which we all know Kiss demoed for Destroyer with Peter on vocals.

I haven't listened but it's an interesting topic - top 5 albums from acts that opened for Kiss in the 70s? I love it!
Lots of classic LPs to choose from but off the top of my head & in alphabetical order via artist name I'll go with:
AC/DC - Powerage
Blue Oyster Cult - Agents of Fortune
Cheap Trick - Dream Police
Rush - 2112
Tom Petty - Damn the Torpedoes

Great topic!
My immediate thought was the first opener I ever saw for Kiss: John Cougar, in St Louis in 1979. I was 10 at the time and was confused that there was a NOT-KISS band playing first.
But I must have been impressed enough because I asked my mom for his album for Christmas. "I Need a Lover" was the big hit at the time, but this buried track has always been my favorite. It's not Kiss music---well, maybe a twinge of HLW---but that's the beauty of a good opener.

Love John. One of my favorite shows was his rural electrification tour. Scarecrow ranks very high on my list of albums.

Great show!! Cool to hear the guys talk about something other than Kiss (even though I still love that and looking forward to the next KissFaq podcast episode)
I was also shocked nobody mentioned Cheap Trick!
Look forward to more, and a Priest themed episode would be cool to hear for sure

No. We're going to break it in slowly and see how it develops and resonates. So many great general rock podcasts, so we have a niche to aim for.Phyllis Simmons wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 8:18 am A lot of potential scope here - are you going to run this one weekly.?

Good show guys, good topic. A lot great choices, like them all. To go off the rails and evade the whole timeline
I hated Heaven when the album came out, found myself liking it more and more the last 2 or so months.

an enjoyable episode. pleased that slade was mentioned, though the album I would have gone with would have been their second and second best play it loud (with the added kiss connection (that of the dressed to kill album cover design) with a negative front cover picture on the back.
