Stallone or Schwarzenegger in the 80’s/90’s?

Post by Tail of a hurricane »

They were the kings of the action genre, but who was the best between the both? Who could get the job done better? Who could kick more arse than the other?

Heck, Arnold and Clint popped up behind me in Carmel then disappeared and it didn't don on me until later it was them!

Now Sylvester needs to do it!

And boy did we lamenate. I'm probably still lamenting, I don't even know it. :o

Seriously, I would pick Arnold anyway of the week, maybe unless I happened to start pondering over "Commando" (1985), ever again.

:thumright: I thought this was a really good one, too. One thing he did more of was Sci-Fi themed films (& Arnold's seemed to always be a good bet), but when Stallone finally got around to doing some himself 🙈 ...they blew monkeys.

Outside of Rocky and Rambo, with their R-alike names -- both double syllable, both starting with 'R' ... don't ask me why -- The Expendables is pretty much the only other thing Sly's known for, or remembered for, in the mainstream. All of them quite violent, in their brutality. Rocky, however, has the distinction of actually preventing The Ultimate Body Count by averting World War III, fighting Drago in Moscow. Arnold also did some mass population saving on Mars, sure enough, but all he had to do was press a button ...

Uhhh WHAT?!?

The Lords of Flatbush
Nighthawks
F.I.S.T.
The Specialist
Lock Up
Cobra
Cliffhanger
Tango And Cash
Victory
Over The Top
Demolition Man
Judge Dredd
Cop Land
Get Carter

While Rocky and Rambo are certainly his most iconic roles, Stallone has a lot of great films! Certainly a lot more than Arnie. But I really loved both of these guys back in the day!

I love Sly -- especially as Rocky -- but it's not a matter of iconic films. Who even knows that Over the Top exists, for example? Most of the films you listed are very obscure, at best. This, despite the fact that F.I.S.T. and Nighthawks are -- qualitatively wise -- probably the very best works of Stallone's entire career. Arnie's been in a lot of unknown, overlooked projects, as well. Who talks about Twins? Nobody. The 6th Day -- ditto. So, don't think I'm picking on Sly! But those films are all but forgotten, except by knowledgeable Boomers and film buffs.

"Nighthawks" was really good, not sure why it didn't do better (other than maybe people were getting sick of Cop stuff).

And I wish I didn't know anything about "Twins", but unfortunately I do. Wish I didn't know anything about "Cobra", either, why'll I'm at it. And never seen "The 6th Day" & for some reason I totally refuse to see it. Not even sure why, just don't want to.

It does seem Stallone's got a wider range artistically. The Rocky-series (which is as much 70s as 80s) beats anything Arnold ever attempted.
The Rambo-series even created a term for over-the-top-machoism.

Arnold had more humour though, but less of a story to tell.

Stallone gets my vote.

Schwarzenegger's a real movie star who saw a hit project from afar. Stallone's the "auteur" who had to milk the few things he got famous for to try and squeeze a bunch of artsy movies inbetween Rocky and Rambo sequels. Both are a huge part of my childhood. I can't imagine Stallone without Schwarzenegger, although I can imagine Arnold without Stallone.

Stallone, without question. Ran two franchises at the same time, as well as lots of other films. On top of that, he is a writer, producer, and director. Arnold has only done one franchise, and while his films are quite good, he hasn't been as prolific in my opinion.

The only Canon Films I like are King Solomon's Mines with John Rhys-Davies and Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold with James Earle Jones. These are Richard Chamberlain vehicles where he gets to rip off A-list adventure fims like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone. In the cheapest way possible ...

Image

Sharon Stone plays Chamberlain's love interest and there's not a trace of the usual ice queen characters she's otherwise known for. Very likeable; very sweet. At her most beautifu in both of these films, as well. And she's got great chemistry with Richard! Unfortunately ... these films are about as racially sensitive as Temple of Doom. Very much of their time. But you can just tell that they had fun making them and ... i just love adventure movies.

With all due respect, can someone explain to me how Arnold could possibly compare to what Sylvester had going on in the 80's with the likes of massive franchises like Rocky and Rambo?

Sly was a HUGE star.

Sure, Terminator, of course, epic, okay.

But in hindsight, freaking Sly WROTE Rocky....I mean, (with no disrespect), Sly was in a different league, no?

Okay, Predator, fine. But Sly never did no Kindergarten Cop...

Tough call, I have to cherry-pick a bit to make it a fair fight…

Schwarzenegger had the following ten flicks in the 80s:

Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Destroyer
Red Sonya
The Terminator
Commando
Raw Deal
Predator
The Running Man
Red Heat
Twins

Stallone had the following ten flicks in the 80s:

Nighthawks
Rocky III
First Blood
Rambo: First Blood II
Rocky IV
Cobra
Over The Top
Rambo III
Lock Up
Tango & Cash

I love all 20 of those flicks, but Arnold wins for the sheer undeniable badassery of Conan, Terminator, Commando, and Predator. He owned the 80s.

Now it’s time for the battle of the 90s.

Schwarzenegger:

Total Recall
Kindergarten Cop
T2
Last Action Hero
True Lies
Junior
Eraser
Jingle All The Way
Batman & Robin
End Of Days

Stallone:

Rocky V
Oscar
Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot
Cliffhanger
Demolition Man
The Specialist
Judge Dredd
Assassins
Daylight
Copland

I gotta give Stallone the edge on this one.

Schwarzenegger just for Total Recall. Probably in my top 10 favourite movies of all time.

Even if Total Recall was not in the list, it would still be quite easily Schwarzenegger.

I like Copland and Cliffhanger when it comes to the Stallone movies.

One thing I will give credit to Arnold for is comedy. Arnold is WAYYYYY better in comedic roles than Stallone. Sly just somehow has awkward timing when it comes to humor and virtually none of his comedic movies are any good. With Arnold, I really enjoyed movies like Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Jingle All The Way, etc. I can't think of a single Stallone comedy that I enjoyed, not one.

Understood. I do think Sly's comedic delivery is decent in his non comedic films. Love Arnold's comedy in True Lies.

Probably looking back at their films I'd pick Stallone, though at the time it was always Arnie.

In the UK there always seemed to be lots of stories about how Sly was a pretentious toss pot - there was one where he would only employ staff shorter than him, or that they would have to walk out of the room backwards. Obviously bollocks now that I'm typing it but obviously the Mirror (or some other red top) had a beef with him.

It's not even close, Arnold wins...The Terminator, Total Recall, Commando, Predator, Conan the Barbarian, Stallone movies I love, Rocky, First Blood and Death Race 2000...if Arnold only made The Terminator and Predator he'd still win.

Weird...my immediate thought was I much prefer Stallone. But going through the lists here, I probably actually like Schwarzenegger's movies better...thanks in large part to the likes of the Terminator flicks and Predator. Guess the difference is I don't find Arnie's characters to be particularly likable. Better movies, but not the more likable characters...

Hands down.

Although I LOVED Silent Rage.
Honestly, this thread is an easy choice: Stallone. Chuck or Charles is much more difficult, and is close to a draw.

For me it’s Stallone too, in a heartbeat. It’s not even a choice.

I love Arnold though.

I strenuously disagree with your Bronson/Norris assessment. Chuck’s awesome but he doesn’t resonate with me the way Bronson does.

As soon as I met Paul Kersey I was hooked.

I do enjoy some of Arnold's films as well, but Stallone wins effortlessly. I love films from both Chuck and Charles, so for me,I feel they are both pretty on par, and there are quite a few good pairings for double features you can make with both actors.
