Many Not Keen on Space Tourism

Post by Bruce »

Image

In the States, it seems, more than half of people polled are not going to be interested in Space Tourism. Lines being drawn between genders and generations, as you might expect. Seniors have health concerns. Men think it costs too much. Women find it scary.

For those who do go, there would have to be tethered space walks involved in the experience -- no question. Otherwise, just being stuck inside a 'ship' or 'space station,' nose pressed the glass seems kinda tame. I mean, yeah, floating around would have to be cool ... at first.

But its probably in a crowded container, which takes from the experience. Something as personal and intensely private as your own, individual spacesuit, outside in the vaccuum itself, looking out, directly towards infinity ... feeling like your sky diving from 250 miles up ... thats gotta be the thing.

What do you think?

I think the idea of going to space just to hang out is redundant. If I were to go I'd need to be 100% sure I'm needed there to do something that needs to be done and I'm the man to do it. I suspect that's how it is for many. Still, my curiosity toward all the space stuff remains.

A few things.

This will not be affordable for a middle class citizen in my lifetime.
The risks will always outweigh the rewards IMO.
I’d rather visit Japan again than this.

I'd love to be able to go out into space, but unless something big changes I suspect I won't be able to in my lifetime.

I used to dream about flying into space.

And then I saw the Challenger footage.

I love all things about Space, but I don’t have any interest in going. Especially at this stage of the game. I hope one day to have my ashes sent into deep Space.

I mean really; what’s there to do or see? It’s not like there’s a beach up there or a Wildlife Sanctuary. No cocktails, no fancy hotels, no museums or concert halls, no restaraunts. Not even a damn park to walk your dog. I just don’t get it.

This point is not lost on those actually involved in trying to set up tourism in space. Many proposals have been drawn up, nothing that seems particularly worthwhile. One idea was to take over the International Space Station, once thats spent & convert it into a space hotel of sorts. Another was to actually build a space hotel like the ISS and put that up in space.

What is there to do, then. when you're onboard the ISS hotel? My guess is ... Float. Look out the window. Activities of some sort, for example, weightless conga line dancing. Gambling. And if you are really lucky, get to do some sort of an EVA. Get your picture taken, as you write your name on the hull and bob around tethered to a robot arm for an hour. Minus the EVA, though, just wasting time and on the verge of being bored. The space toilet has to be an experience and a half. Sex with your partner in zero G in your ... room ... i guess.

They do TONS of science on the ISS. A lot having to do with medical research.

Right. Was talking about the ISS being converted into a space hotel, when the U.S. finally decides its done flipping the bill for its upkeep. Fact is, though, that there is no science being performed on the ISS that can't be reasonably approximated here on earth, or by using space sattelites. Even growing large crystals for medical research can be done on earth. The only exception being studying long-term effects of weightlessness on the Human body. And throwing a bone to lesser space agencies so that their tiny countries get to play in space on feel-good missions, too.

Figuratively speaking. I haven't met one in real life. Online a lot of people are saying that, most of them for comedic purposes, to see the overreaction.
In any case it's not a worthy opponent to pick a fight with if the goal is to promote science.
