Some random thought about the show:

Same set list...they played Deuce

Paul sounded pretty decent. Better than the last time they played London

The Spider did nothing for me. I'll say it's just ok. More annoying than anything really

Overall great show. Band was very tight and seemed to have a great time. Gene was very mobile. Paul has to keep the stage raps to a minimum....but its Paul with the usual stuff.

KISS rocks Budweiser Gardens in London
By James Reaney, The London Free Press
Sunday, July 28, 2013 10:12:52 EDT AM

Image

Here’s the thing – KISS still makes an entrance like nobody else in rock and roll.

The U.S. rock superstars returned to a jammed Budweiser Gardens on Saturday night descending from a huge contraption. The KISS carrier looked like a giant spider or space walker made out of construction beams – and as it went down down down up up up went blasts of pyro hot enough to melt makeup on a fan or two

The crowd was volcanic from the start as Starchild Paul Stanley, bassist Gene Simmons and guitar hero Tommy Thayer stepped off the contraption.

In the back, Eric Singer, the drummer with the cat’s whiskers makeup and the big hands, pounded away as KISS crunched through Psycho Circus, the 1970s’ hit Shout It Out Loud and Simmons at the mic for Let Me Go, Rock ’N’ Roll.

Thayer shredded and posed in the early going. Stanley had his sweet pout working.

Full disclosure: These comments are being shaped by rock and roll hero and former Londoner Joe Chertkow, who is at the Bud, too. Back in the day, Joe & I reviewed an early KISS album chiefly by comparing it to bands we liked. Joe noticed we talked about Grand Funk Railroad. Could have fooled me.

Being the true expert, Joe reviewed KISS for the Western Gazette in one of their many visits to London in the 1970s. Joe knows. So we’re in good hands & ears.

On Saturday, with the pyro and the crazed fans, it was going to be a night at the downtown London arena.

The mood was set before the show when a captain in the KISS Army challenged the gents in a men’s washroom at the Bud to shout it out loud. “This ain’t a Justin Bieber concert,” he said. Which was true. Bieber’s fans might not have needed such prodding.

Still, when KISS reached the stage via that contraption, the fans were loud indeed even if Simmons had stepped on to the stage gingerly.

Must have been those huge platform boots he was sporting.

A band as big as KISS needs the biggest in everything, it seems.

How big is KISS? Well, once upon a time Simmons said they were even bigger than . . . (pause for gulp of disbelief) Mickey Mouse. “You don’t know how big the image is. By some experts, it is believed to be the most recognized pop culture image on Earth -- even above Mickey Mouse,” Simmons said a few years ago to contactmusic.com.

“You know, there’s no U2 comic book, there’s no Mick Jagger action figure. We have our own Visa card. You can go into Wal-Mart and get sweets with our faces on (on them). We have a Dr Pepper soft drink campaign now. It’s unbelievable.”

Well, it does give new meaning to the phrase – fabled as a sign of how seriously the Disney empire took its copyright and trademark terrain – “Don’t mess with The Mouse.”

Mickey Mouse beater or not, KISS has always been huge in the London and has been a frequent visitor in recent years.

KISS was in the region for Sarnia Bayfest 2009 in mid-July, at the then-John Labatt Centre in late September, and back at Bayfest again in early July 2011.

It was an incredible crowd, three generations in KISS makeup, Joe Chertkow said post-show.

Joe was impressed by Stanley’s role as de facto leader.

Thayer had some O Canada for the crowd on guitar – a night after Journey’s Neal Schon had the anthem going at Rock the Park nearby -- and Stanley had his regular zip-lining to send him flying over the crowd.

Stanley came up with the line of the night, Joe said.

“Hullo London. Last night we were in Toronto,” Stanley said, knowing it’s a guaranteed boo-generator in London. Then Stanley had a cool observation to send the crowd into a frenzy: “It’s not about the size. It’s about the size of your heart.”

Following is the setlist for KISS at Budweiser Gardens on Saturday July 27, 2013. It’s the regular setlist from the Monster tour:

Psycho Circus
Shout It Out Loud
Let Me Go, Rock 'N' Roll
I Love It Loud
Hell or Hallelujah
War Machine
(Gene breathes fire)
Heaven's on Fire
Deuce
Say Yeah
Shock Me / Outta This World
Guitar and Drum Solos
(Tommy Thayer / Eric Singer)
Bass Solo
(Gene spits blood and is aloft)
God of Thunder
Lick It Up
Love Gun
(Paul flies over crowd to the B-stage)
Black Diamond
Encore:
Detroit Rock City
I Was Made for Lovin' You
Rock and Roll All Nite
God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II

Sad when Paul makes his way to the mic, then decides to save his voice and pretends to sing the background vocals.

Smart move for Bruce to spend some time with Gene. I see Bruce being invited to play some kind of role with KISS in the near future -- upcoming book, documentary or cruise???

Bruce has been out of the band now for almost 20 years, the least they could do is let him play one freaking song with them ... the fans would dig it.

I like Bruce a lot, but I don't want him onstage with them at a normal KISS show in 2013.

However, it would be an interesting experiment for the Unplugged segment of the Kruise. At least the people there would know who he is.

Sounds like Gene is as sensitive as some of the kleenex brigade here.

perhaps, but I don't picture the "KISS SUX TODAY" brigade with kleenex as much as I picture them punching pictures of Gene and Paul, and grunting and groaning a lot with each successive blow.

When KISS hit the stage (on time I might add), I sat mouth agape and the accompanying feeling of wonderful bewilderment never subsided two hours later. I have seen and experienced a lot in my time but the show KISS’s Gene Simmons at 63 and Paul Stanley at 61 put on with their talented sidekicks is part spectacle, part celebration requiring a marathon of energy. I got tired just watching them but readily confess, I enjoyed every minute of it.

Oh I see them with kleenex. Whining and crying about all the whining and crying going on. I think it just bothers some of them that KISS (though not nearly as popular as their zenith in the 70's and the make-up rebirth in 96) still have fans who enjoy what they put out now.

Actually I think any normal human being, who doesn't regularly post or participate in discussions in the internet would be as sensitive to the amount of shit here (not in KISSfaq, internet in general).
