I'll be there. It's been sold out since 2-3 weeks into sales.

It's not a partial sell out either, it's 100% of the venue.

any chance they open up some additional seats somehow or are they past the regulated fire code ? I was hoping the ticket windows might be open for a while.
Two years ago on the Saturday night of Labor Day weekend KISS had over 12,400 people in attendance. I bet there is more than that tonight because I bought tickets at the window that night.

This may be an odd question as I haven't been to a tour since Revenge, but...

Do people stand for the whole show at these events? I assume they do on the floor, but we're half way back in the balcony.

Also, how are the sight lines? I was going to take my 7 year old, but not sure if he'll be able to stand the entire time or see anything. :D

Are there any park and rides to the state fair around the Mystik lake casino/hotel or Mall of America?

BREAKING NEWS !

VAN HALEN Guitarist Undergoes Emergency Surgery; Japanese Tour Postponed - Aug. 29, 2012

VAN HALEN has released the following statement:
"Eddie Van Halen underwent an emergency surgery for a severe bout of diverticulitis. No further surgeries are needed and a full recovery is expected within four [to] six months.

"VAN HALEN's scheduled November 2012 tour of Japan is currently being rescheduled and the band looks forward to seeing and playing for their fans in 2013."

According to WebMD, diverticulosis happens when pouches (diverticula) form in the wall of the colon. If these pouches get inflamed or infected, it is called diverticulitis. Diverticulitis can be very painful.

No, I'm not. This is the first time I have missed Kiss in 26 years. I'm completely depressed about this situation.

I honestly cannot believe they sold out a 12,500 seat place. My expectation was to go there and get cheap seats since the placement of the seats wouldn't matter with the passes.

I've seen reports that there are 17,000 seats in the place, yet KISS sold out the place with over 13,000 tickets sold on their own in 2010.

Here I am thinking DIVERT-iculosis is what is employed when a band can't stand the sight of each other and no longer wants to share the same stage together....

Hmmm...

Is this is the 4th revolving encore? It was played last year, but had not been played in a while up to that point. I know that's not a huge deal, but as I'm seeing a few shows in a few weeks, some surprises and rotating of setlist would be nice.

Crue, Kiss team up for one wild ride
Imagine eating a Pronto Pup, a tray of cheese curds and a bag of mini-donuts. Then going on that new Stratosphere ride, the double-Ferris wheel and the roller coaster.

Well, the State Fair grandstand presented the musical equivalent of that Wednesday night -- a doubleheader of Kiss and Motley Crue. If ever two bands were built for the fair, these holdovers from the 1970s and '80s, respectively, are. They had makeup, pyro, loud guitars, leather-throated vocals and more gimmicky gizmos than you could find inside the grandstand. Talk about your thrill ride and freak show rolled into one.

Despite the gymnastics of Crue drummer Tommy Lee and the blood-spitting antics of Kiss' Gene Simmons, the music of both bands was really just meat-and-potatoes rock -- served with an overdose of condiments. Just three chords and sex, drugs and volume.

The Crue brought lasers, flamethrowers, fireworks, a flame-shooting bass guitar, water sprayers, fire and scantily clad women who sang, danced and did tumbling tricks in the air suspended only by thick chains.

But the tour de force is always Lee's drum kit, which this time was on a round track so he could play upside down. If that wasn't enough, he brought a fan -- Jessica, who said she was sober (to Lee's chagrin) but sporting a new Crue T-shirt -- for a ride as she strapped on behind him for a trip on the wild side.

Truth be told, despite all the bravado, f-bombs and feigned Hollywood decadence, the Crue didn't exactly rock the house the way they used to. Frontman Vince Neil still has a high-pitched yelp but didn't ooze the energy of old.

The real hero during the sluggishly paced 85-minute set was guitarist Mick Mars, who has been suffering from a spinal disease for years but seemed more active than in the recent past and cut loose on some whammy bar-spiked solos.

Like the Crue, Kiss offered a set that was mostly an assembly of greatest-hits plus one new song. And, of course, the kingpins of rock theatrics had plenty of the same old tricks -- a fireworks-shooting guitar, giant flames, Simmons' flying to the top of the stage and Paul Stanley's riding a cable over the crowd to a platform among the 13,138 fans. The new wrinkles were a giant video screen backdrop (the biggest the State Fair has ever seen), Kiss spelled out on video instead of actual lights at the back of the stage and Simmons' wearing a wedding band. Now that's really new.

Relatively new guitarist Tommy Thayer played it fast and clean and sang credibly on "Shock Me." At 60-something, the ever-energetic Stanley and Simmons didn't seem to miss a platform-shoed step.

Both Kiss and Crue have headlined the fair before, in 2010 and 2005, respectively. As co-headliners, which of these golden oldies was better?

The sing-alongs were a tossup. Lee's drum kit roller coaster couldn't be beat. But Kiss had more creative visuals, no ballads (bravo!) and charged pacing. Heck, even Stanley's arms were better toned than Neil's, even though the Motley Crue singer is a decade younger.

If these two monsters of rock were rides on the Midway, Dr. Love (Kiss) was more exciting than Dr. Feelgood (Motley Crue).

It appears that a sold out show at The Granstand holds about 13,000. That's the same number that was reported a sellout at HSOE in 2010. I find a lot of sources stating 17,000. I wonder what the real number is?

No, I'm not. This is the first time I have missed Kiss in 26 years. I'm completely depressed about this situation.

I honestly cannot believe they sold out a 12,500 seat place. My expectation was to go there and get cheap seats since the placement of the seats wouldn't matter with the passes.
Did you get to the show?
No, and today I am getting mixed reviews. All the 'Kiss fans' I am talking to are saying it was awful, they should retire, why do they play so slow now, Paul's voice, etc. All the casuals had the best night of their lives.

Honestly... Even a bad Kiss show is better than a night with no Kiss show at all, so I wish I had been able to go.

Well, I thought Kiss was pretty good. The rhythm section was right on, and just a few bum notes from Tommy and Paul. There were a couple times Paul was straining, yet he was better than Vince. That said, Vince was the MVP of Crue as he worked his ass off. I think the slowness could be attributed to the downtuning, but I really didn't notice it too much. DRC sounded a little slow.

The sound/mix was nice and crisp and tight whereas I thought Crue was a little muddy on the low end and too crisp on the high end. The people around me seemed to really enjoy Kiss and I was half way up in the blechers on Paul's side.

The show pace moved fast to me as they crammed all the gimmicks into under 90 minutes. They lost the crowd a bit during Hell or Halleuigh, but got 'em right back for the next song. Crue seemed to drag a bit in spots.

There were lots of tix at face outside the venue. I was offered floor seats at face and I thought about upgrading, but then didn't know if I could move mine.

As far as 'they should retire' crowd, well I'd say just don't see them again. I agree with you, a bad Kiss show is better than no Kiss show.

That's because 90% of the fans there aren't as picky as we are.

Some are saying the set is stale and Paul's voice is done, others are saying that it was, as you say, "the best night of their lives".

I don't necessarily think that the other 90% are wrong either. We are a bit picky. Paul's voice is obvious, but the stale setlist doesn't matter to someone who is out on the lawn partying.

I don't really think the set's too stale this time out, although that illusion is probably being made by it being such a short set though. I'm extremely excited to get to hear War Machine live though, and trying to guess what encore they'll bring out should be fun.

Right now there's...

"Deuce"
"Cold Gin"
"Strutter"
"Do You Love Me?"

Add something like "Parasite" or "Ladies Room" to the mix and, for the first time in a while, we'll be guessing which of the songs are played. I'm seeing them in two weeks time for consecutive shows, so I may get two different encores.

As for the regular set, I'm interested in hearing "War Machine", "God Of Thunder", and "Hell or Hallelujah".

It's only stale to people who are following every show and obsessing You Tube. How can you get sick of a show you only see once a year. It's been basically the same show since 1975, it was stale in 1996 if it's stale now.

I've never seen a show where they've performed "War Machine" or "Hell or Hallelujah".

I'm not sick of the setlists because I haven't seen a show yet, and (as a fan of the band), I actually like the songs that they play.

But I'm screwed up like that...

I agree their set list has been shit for a very very long time. It only got worse once the reunion tour happened. At least before then there were newer songs all over the setlist. MDD should still be in the set.

What a great show! My 16th time seeing the boys and I'd go back tomorrow if I could. First time seeing Motley and they were ok. Lots of stuff going on on the stage but not enough to distract you from Vince's voice/lyric challenges. Some of the songs were almost unrecognizable. The girls were a nice touch though. My oldest son (whole family went) actually thought Mick Mars was their MVP of the night. Tommy's solo roller coaster stunt was pretty cool even if the performance was pretty basic. Crowd seemed to have a tough time getting into them though. You can really tell Tommy wants to go back to being a front man so bad.

I thought KISS really brought it. Pauls voice was noticable rough in a couple of spots but over all seemed good. Noticed he takes alot of songs off and doesn't sing back-up. Gene seemed to have a bass issue at the start of DRC and it took a little to get it switched out. Paul seemed to enjoy that. :D Eric seemed to be very active on the drums. Lots of twirling . H or H sounded ok live but it is always great to hear a new tune. Pauls iTunes comment got some laughs. I know some folks have complained alot that they don't seem to move much so I tried to pay attention to that. When they weren't singing back-up (which Gene seems to do more of now) they all (especially Paul) where move and shakin so I was happy. Do You Love Me was a great surprise. Sounded great. Wished the show lasted longer. Sounded like they would be coming back to Minnesota (of course they almopst always sound like they are coming back)

Well hey, I haven't heard War Machine in 20 years, God of Thunder in 5 years, Firehouse in 5 years, Do You Love Me? (if they play it) in years, and I get a new song (even if I don't really care for it). Personally I think it's a short and sweet set.

[quote="nibbler1982"] It appears that a sold out show at The Granstand holds about 13,000. That's the same number that was reported a sellout at HSOE in 2010. I find a lot of sources stating 17,000. I wonder what the real number is?

There is a link somewhere with an article from 2003. Back then they did an upgrade on the old Grandstand and enlarged it to a capacity of 17,000. They show a drawing with a stage that explains things. The 17,000 would be for something like auto racing where they can fill the other side of the place to capacity on the side where the stage is. They cannot put people off to the sides of the stage, maybe with angled temporary bleachers they could but I don't think they have ever tried it for a concert.
