Independence Township (the local unit of government where the theatre is located) has had an ordinance in effect forbidding concerts or events to be played past 11:00 pm there due to noise complaints from nearby residents. The bands playing there are subject to a $5000 fine for going over the 11:00 pm time limit and are then charged $10,000 per minute fines for every minute past 11:10 pm they play

To All KISS AND Motley Fans:

On its way to Detroit, our pyro trunk was involved in an accident and flipped, spilling our gear all along the freeway.

We owe you the show you expect and deserve, so we've jointly decided to give our crews the 24 hours necessary to piece everything together to make it possible.

THE PARTY IS NOW THURSDAY NIGHT SEPTEMBER 6th.

See you there!

the statement said that at 830am heading from Nashville to Detroit (3 hours from venue), the truck driver went to grab his bottled water and veered to the shoulder and lost control stearing the truck into the field instead of near by vehicles, tipping sideways and spilling 6Million dollars of gear everywhere out the top of the semi trailer.
Had it cleaned up and re-leaded on another truck in 4 hours-driver sent to hospital no injuries...
all gear is HERE IN DETROIT for the show TONIGHT!!
Paul and Nikki Sixx called in to local radio WRIF 101.1 fm in Detroit for breaking news announcement at approx. 3:30pm EST about the postponing of the show, and wanted to give us the complete show not a show without pyro.
Paul said Detroit deserves the proper show-they almost played last night (9/5)-but both bands decided...THIS IS DETROIT, lets give them what they came for, both bands have HUGE history in Detroit, and to give an incomplete show is cheating.
Then Paul stated in laughter (w/Nikki laughing in background), "everyone in the parking lot right now tailgating, put the hotdogs and beer away, come back tomorrow" :D

I swear I was only just talking to one of the guys in my band about transporting big tours like this around the country.
We were even discussing what might happen if an equipment truck broke down or crashed, how they would get around it. I guess now we know.
Hope I didn't jinx it !

Yeah you probably jinxed it. Now to make it all better go talk to your friend about about freshening up tired stage shows and setlists and the good people of Michigan will forget this.

WOW!!! All I can say is WOW!!! Been a longtime KISS fan since 1984 when I was 8 years old. This was my very first KISS concert. Here's a brief mini review along with set-list info:

Arena/Theater
Clarkston is about 25 miles north of Detroit. Kind of out in the middle of nowhere. Ironically because of local ordinances, all shows MUST end by 11:00 or face financial penalties. The stage "seems" small, but both shows had their full stage setups. The theater is split into two sections, a covered pavilion area that seats roughly 4000 people. Then there is a open air lawn section behind that seats 25-30,000. Views from the lawn (where we were) range from very good down to "i have a pole right in front of me"

The Treatment
Nothing much to say - opening band from England. Had some good energy.

Motley Crue
One of the best entrances. They actually came out through the walkway that separates the pavillion and the lawn area. They were holding MC flags with girls and walked up to the stage. Very cool.
As other reviews have noted, awesome show and the band seemed tight. Sonically, I would give a VERY slight edge to the crue, probably just because they seemed louder. Vince did a good job although I noticed he would skip lyrics often. This is one WILD show. Where else do you see flamethrowers, women on stilts, women flying, women in bikinis, women everywhere!! And Tommy's drum roller coaster is not to be missed. Their set list was:

1. Saints of Los Angeles
2. Shout at the Devil
3. Same Ol Situation
4. Sex
5. Girl Don't Go Away Mad
6. Home Sweet Home
7. Tommy Lee Drum Solo
8. Mick Mars Solo
9. Livewire
10. Primal Scream
11. Dr. Feelgood
12. Girls, Girls, Girls
13. Kickstart My Heart

Very, very good show. I was impressed that these guys had so much energy. The ONLY negative thing I can say is that man do they love to drop the F-Bomb. Vince and Tommy were miked for the show and they love to swear!!

Stage turnover took around 25 minutes. Then the lights went off and the video monitors showed Doc McGee bringing the band out of the dressing room. Then all lights off and "Allright Detroit, You Wanted the Best..." line

KISS
My first concert so I had high expectations. I was very impressed and blown away. A very "clean" production on their part. Very tight musically, no errors that I was aware of. Tommy changed guitars about 3/4 of the way through from a black/gold Les Paul to a Silver guitar. Paul may have had some guitar troubles midway through because a guitar tech cam running out with a new guitar. Gene switched between a punisher bass and his axe bass

The Setlist:
1. Detroit Rock City
2. Shout it Out Loud
3. I Love it Loud
4. Firehouse
5. Hell or Hallelujah
6. War Machine
7. Shock Me
8. Tommy solo/jam w/ Eric. Eric drum solo
9. Gene Bass Solo/God of Thunder
10. Love Gun
11. Lick it Up
12. Black Diamond
13. Strutter
14. Rock and Roll all Nite

Gene, Eric and Tommy vocals sounded impressive. Gene's raspy voice makes for a great live performance. Paul I thought was good, not great. Almost seemed like he had a cold. He definitely gave 110% Some songs he sounded great, others he sounded like he was pushing. Ironically, he hit high notes like they were no problem.

Show Notes
- Descended from the lighting rig with the opening chords of Detroit Rock City
- Gene breathed fire during firehouse
- Gene spit blood and flew just before God of Thunder
- Tommy/Eric Jam was unbelievable. Say what you want about wearing Ace's makeup, playing old songs, whatever, this man can smoke on a guitar
- Tommy shot rockets during solo. One of the coolest effects of the night -- after the jam ended, Eric pulls out an RPG -- YES an RPG!!! -- and shot towards Tommy knocking a piece of lighting/rigging down. Very cool!!
- Paul swept out towards the middle of the crowd for Love Gun on a turn table which was very neat
- Paul played a mini guitar solo for the intro of Black Diamond before launching into the song
- halfway through lick it Up, the band segued into "Won't Get Fooled Again" by the Who. VERY COOL!!!
- I thought the video effects were impressive and fit the show well. The War Machine graphics were very neat. The soldiers look like lego people, but the dragon breathing fire was neat
- Rock and Roll all Nite? What can you say -- I've never seen more fireworks, fire and confetti at once in my life. AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!
- Someone must have talked to Gene about his makeup because it looked more "back to normal".
- Outfits looked great. Gene definitely stands out
- Regardless of the voice, Paul Stanley still looks ripped - Man and he's 60!!

In all, I was blown away and impressed by the show. It was everything I imagined. Last thing -- shirts were $35-45 depending on size. Sorry, couldn't do it. Love the band, just didn't have the money for it. Didn't hamper the overall experience though.

OK, so who did better? Wow -- it's a tossup. Both very good shows. I would probably give a VERY SLIGHT edge to KISS because of how tight the show was. Just a little bit better then Crue.

I don't what the previous poster when he said, "seats 4,000 and than another 25-30,000 for the open air lawn". The total capacity of this venue is 15,274.

Thanks for the great review.....was there last night too but due to conflicts only made it in time to see KISS. I think we were the absolute last people to come in and I was surprised by quite a few people leaving before KISS even started.

cchevela1023 wrote:WOW!!!

Great review and yes, great show. Paul was a bit rough at times, and I noticed that Erik took over on some of the high harmonies more than once. By the time he did the intro for "Black Diamond", his voice was very strained, but he still delivered the goods and I was very pleased. My 39th KISS concert!!!!

Did anyone notice the small fire on stage behind Erik after Lick it Up? A roadie ran out with a towel and was frantically trying to put it out!!!

Those photos look like they could've come straight out of the tour book, especially Gene blowing the flame. Great job!

AMAZING!!!
4 hour drive there and back [traffic]
Pot and Ciggerettes were blowing in the air and i had to breath it in for the hours of the show. only down-side.
Motley put on a great show...walked in through the walkway and onto the stage!
Tommy Lee; "Hold on to your titties or im gonna spank you!"
Girls girls girls; Pictures of women on screen -justin bieber shows on screen with them . :D
Opening act "the treatment" were okay. but i thought they were just trying to get everyone hyped, but for good reason... KISS/MOTLEY CRUE
KISS put on the spectacle... nothing more to say

Paul's intro to "Strutter" last night...(give or take a few indecipherable words)

"I don't know if you've ever heard this album...it's called KISS ALIVE! I think this might be the first track on the album...I don't know."
