What a trainwreck!

Yes, the sound blew out during "King Of The Nighttime World".
Paul was speaking into the mic and of course no one could hear what he was sayin'.

They came back after about 10 minutes and stood around for abit before the problem was corrected.

There were some other (not as major) screw-ups as well...

Entertainment Columnists / Jane Stevenson
KISS electrifies ACC despite rocky start
By JANE STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Sure, they wanted to rock and roll all night, but KISS short circuited just one song into their Air Canada Centre show Friday night.

After an explosive fire display, the veteran rockers were about half way through their opening song, King Of The Night Time World, when they appeared to lose power causing the audience to boo loudly.

Without an active microphone, singer-guitarist Paul Stanley held up his hands and mouthed that the group, rounded out by bassist Gene Simmons, drummer Eric Singer and lead guitarist Tommy Thayer, would be back “in about five to ten minutes” and they walked off stage.

Shortly thereafter, and with little in the way of further reaction from the KISS army, the quartet returned and Stanley explained what was going on: “There is a problem with the electricity and the power at the ACC, but we have fixed it and we are here to kick your ass,” he said.

After checking their gear, the group then launched into Deuce and the show, as they say, went on for another two-and-a-half hours.

“It started to look like we might have to reschedule,” said Stanley, 57, afterwards, prompting more boos. “Last night (on Thursday), Montreal said they’d kick your ass. Tonight, Toronto, you have to prove them wrong.”

KISS were in hot water in these parts earlier this year when they failed to announce an Oshawa date on the first leg of their KISS Alive/35 Tour even though the city had won an online poll to have the band play a concert there.

They since scheduled a show for Oct. 7 in Oshawa, the day after the release of their first studio album in 11 years, the guitar-rock driven Sonic Boom, which was represented in Friday night’s set list by the new single, Modern Day Delilah.

Basically, other than the sound and electricity problems, it was the same KISS act, different decade.

Some 37 years after forming in New York City, with original lead guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss, the black leather and studs, platform boots and black and white Kabuki makeup were back along with the loud sound, pyrotechnics, dry ice and stunts galore.

Simmons, 60, pulled out his fire-eating routine during Hotter Than Hell and later spewed blood, showing off his famous long tongue, and flew up to the lighting stand to sing lead vocals on I Love It Loud in the best bit of the night.

Stanley also sailed over the heads of the audiences on a pulley and wound up on a smaller rotating stage on the floor for Love Gun.

Their streamlined stage, meanwhile, was dominated by the word KISS in large white lights and rows and rows of small video screens resembling TV sets.

Thayer put on a major guitar solo display, with yet even more fire and explosions, and Singer did the obligatory drum solo on a rotating stage but nothing really matched the white confetti, steam and fire, and the three mini stages that elevated Simmons, Stanley and Thayer, during the set-ending Rock And Roll All Nite.

Still, the encore songs, Shout It Out Loud, Lick It Up and Detroit Rock City, came awfully close.

Sound went out about 2 seconds into the Buckcherry set. Then a 10 minute " break " followed where the band left the stage, they returned and completed the set without problem.

King Of The Night Time World opened. The sound went out with about 10 seconds left into the opening song, Paul started to speak but could not be heard prompting boos from the crowd. The band left the stage for 10 minutes, they returned and Paul said the Air Canada Centre was having " electrical issues ". It took them about 2-3 minutes to get started since the issue was not quite resolved. It finally got fixed and they played the rest of the set without issue.

Similar setlist to Montreal. I Stole Your Love still in. Cold Gin was played during the encores as well (I think either before or after Lick It Up).

Full review tomorrow.

Incidentally, the live CD's of the show start at Deuce, because of the fuckup.
Also, during Tommy's solo, a piece of the lighting rig detached, swung around for a while, and finally dropped onto the stage below. Pretty dangerous stuff, considering there was a security guard standing a few feet away, completely oblivious. Other than that, it was a great show. Paul did sound a bit off at times, but he gave it his all.
I don't know about this new falsetto thing he's doing, either. He seems to like doing it ... a lot. And about 80% of the time he can hit it ... the other 20% just sounds like shite. Anyways, when the Toronto thread gets made, please move this in there mods. Thx.
I'll post a video of MDD later tonight. Managed to get most of it on my digi cam.

I was there, second row center and did the Meet & Greet. I'll probably post a longer review later but I'll do a short one now.

The Meet & Greet went pretty smoothly considering there were nearly 60 people doing it. I was worried that we would not get much time for autographs and photos but they split us up into two groups so we could each get an equal amount of time. This proved to work well, as I got my stuff signed, as well as individual photos with Paul and Eric. The area where Tommy and Gene was standing was absolutely packed so I didn't manage single photos with them, but certainly got to talk to them and get autographs.

After that it was time to head to the seats. Caught the last couple minutes of Buckcherry's set but the Meet & Greet was well worth missing them for.

After Buckcherry was done it didn't take long at all to set the stage for KISS. When they opened with King Of The Night Time World, it was a pleasant surprise as I have been avoiding the setlists from the last couple nights. Then of course we had the sound cut as been mentioned. It wasn't long before the band came back and Deuce was definitely a strong way to get things going again. Interestingly I was joking with a few people before the show about what the opening song would be and how there are so many good choices. We joked that they should open with every song. King of ironic I suppose, as we ended up getting two opening songs in a way because of the little break!

Paul sounded great. He did have a few rough moments but overall he gave his all and I was certainly not disappointed by his voice. Sounded fine by me!

Gene was in full demon mode, looked like he was having a lot of fun. He kept jumping around a few times throughout the show.

Tommy and Eric are both perfect additions to the line-up. The band is tighter than ever and both of them seemed to really enjoy both meeting the fans and playing the show.

Like I said, I may do a longer review at some point but thought I'd just mention a few things. Overall, the experience was great and despite a shaky start with the sound issues, those around me just laughed it off and we certainly received a very strong show. It was my first ever KISS show and to be able to do it Meet & Greet style and with a few surprises (I Stole Your Love was unexpected and awesome), it was a perfect Friday night. I talked to a few of the other people doing the Meet & Greet afterwards and it appears we all felt the same way: we'd do it all again!

Also, as was mentioned, the live CD starts at Deuce but it's understandable. We'd only have half of KOTNTW if they included that.

Late review and I'll only add a few points...

I should mention that I have not seen Kiss perform live since the Asylum tour (Maple Leaf Gardens) - without the make up, it wasn't the same.

Friday night's show may very well be the best concert I've ever seen. Some have mentioned that they don't like the flying stuff. Not all of us get the premium seats, so having Paul coming within 20 feet from me was really awesome. The problematic start was a bummer, but they handled it pretty well. Paul's voice was okay - I think it may just be a cold.

On a side note - Buckcherry. Where did they dig these yahoos up from? Their material clearly does not play to their audience (adults and potentially their children). I can only think that Kiss wanted someone as brutal as possible to make their show look spectacular.

I have some pictures that I will post shortly.
