I'm sure I can speak for all those attending this show by saying that seeing a KISS show in Newfoundland come across the KISSFAQ discussion board makes me very happy.

I've waited a long time for this! I've seen KISS 6 times, but they've never played in my home province before.

God Guard Thee Newfoundland.

Looking forward to the show.

Another here. I can't believe they are coming here, I've been a fan since I was a kid and I'm 44 now. My best bud who's been a fan as long as I have is going to there with his wife and daughter, he's never seen them live, it'll be great to see his reaction. I've been lucky enough to see them 3 times, so I'm pretty excited. I hear about 15 000 tickets are sold. Shannon Tweed btw has confirmed she'll be shooting a guest starring role on Republic of Doyle ( Canadian cop show shot in St. John's), presumably while here for the show, and of course rumors of GSFJ having some stuff filmed here seeing as Shannon is in her home province.
KISS is on this week's cover of the NL Herald. My cousin is the senior editor and wrote the article and it is, well, factually pretty bad. Saying KISS will play rarely played songs like DRC and RARAN is, well, lacking in research. :)

Heard the water is really high this year. Not sure if it's impacting the pools or not. Good luck.

Enjoy the fishing. I'm probably going to do some later in the summer.

I'll be in Halifax in August.

Weather is supposed to be nice on Saturday. Very slight winds and 22 degrees celcius with a 10% chance of precipitation. Central is usually warmer than on the coast.

I was actually there on Monday, as we were passing through and decided to spend the night and part of the next day day there. Went to Taz Records and picked up some stuff. Also went to Brussels restaurant and got drunk on Belgian beer. :) We stayed at the Delta Barrington just around the corner.

In August we have a wedding to go to in New Brunswick on the 13th. Since we are driving, we're going to spend 2-3 nights in Halifax on the way home. Actually, we may stay in Bedford and go into the city every morning.

I love your city. I've been there 6 times and every time I find something new to do.

It's a great city for sure.

In August do yourself a favor and have brunch at Janes on the Common, and have a dinner at the Brooklyn Warehouse.

Leaving St. John's in about 2 hours with a carload of 5 of us. It's just over a 4 hour drive, but traffic will be crazy. I expect 6 hours, maybe more.

KISS tomorrow night.......

It might be the most attended show so far this tour.

Expect photos, a review, and media reviews on Sunday evening when I get home.

I can't believe one of the opening acts hated the show "Webster" so much that they'd name their band after it.

I mean, sure, it was a blatant Dif'rnt Strokes rip-off, but ... come on.

And while many may complain about the current state of KISS and whether or not it's a tribute band, it could be worse. As evidence, I give you another of the opening acts: "The Orchestra. Former Members of the Electric Light Orchestra."

Uh...... no.

Not for nothing but I've seen The Orchestra over a dozen times and they really kick ass. They're one hell of a band. I'll be seeing KISS in the Poconos and up at Turning Stone on this Lost Cities Tour. If I knew The Orchestra was opening today I would have definitely made the flight up from NYC.

Three hours from home on a hotel computer....Review later. Some comments.

It poured....in biblical proportions. About 40 minutes before KISS came on. A LOT of people there. A LOT of happy people stayed on until the end. Paul's voice was as normal. Gene was great. Opening abands did nothing for me. We skipped Fe Fe Dobson. Got there around 5:00. Compact stage, since they used the festival stage. However, they used it well with a fair bit of pyro, considering the rain. I'd guess that there had to be 20,000 + there.

But Christ....did it ever pour. We are a hearty bunch....to say the least...

The Oz FM cruise skanks announced 30 000 people. Half of that or more were in the beer area. Quick thoughts.
The rain sucked, I hate outdoor shows. Paul, Tommy and Gene got soaked as well. Paul wasn't bad tonight voicewise, great otherwise. Gene sang more than usual, and with Tommy doing Shock Me and Eric on BD and Beth you can see they are trying to take up the slack for Paul's voice, Paul wasn't singing back up much at all, didn't sing at any time he wasn't needed. This seemed to help. He did good, but you can still hear his voice issue.
Stage was on an already present stage in GFW, so KISS's stage setup was a bit different. I'll put up a pic.
Also, as for those who say KISS needs to mix things up from the long standing show, sure, for those of us he see a shitload of shows. But stuff like Gene licking Tommy's neck, Tommy and Eric's pyro, various things we all know about, went over big with the casual fans and they were entertained big time. I didn't hear a negative comment about the show, and it was a stripped down show what with no Gene and Paul wire gags and such. They did a great job and it was the biggest crowd do far on the tour. I hope this means we get them back sometimes. In Mile One Centre tho please!

I was there. I swore I wasn't going to go because of weather but some old friends who were into Kiss with me back in the day talked me into it. Drove 5 hours to Grand Falls on Saturday, met up with friends and went down to the show. Was largest attendance ever at this festival - 30,000. THe whole set up is a fiasco - the beer tent is a nightmare - I don't drink at these things anyway, and in a good way, it keeps a lot of the idiots out of your hair. Lots of people in make-up. It was a beautiful day, so we skipped all the opening acts. It started to rain just before Kiss and poured the entire time. People stuck it out and the crowd was great. Some people were frozen. I was lucky to have a friend in the media who got us under the VIP tent so while our view wasn't as good as out front, it was dry and there were free beers if you wanted one! :)

A few points:

My reporter friend got to interview them - Gene mooned some of the media in an early interview backstage before the show, in non-makeup. Classy move Gene  I haven't chatted with her yet today about the context of what was going on, but she just laughed it off. She said Tommy was by far the nicest, so personable and appeared genuinely interested in what people had to say. She also said it was funny watching Kiss at the hotel after, still soaking wet from the rain and in full make-up waiting for a ride back to the airport, which in itself was a 2 hour drive in pouring rain. (Normally 45 mins to an hour - the traffic was insane.)

Kiss had 1/2 a stage to work with and 1/2 a stage show. Not their fault, they had to work within the existing structure. I thought they did a creative job of putting together a different stage set up to fill it in. The two video screens were actually placed behind Gene and Tommy's raised platforms. It looked pretty cool. The ceiling was too low to put much pyro on stage - most of it was on top of the stage roof as you can see from some of the pictures posted.

It was interesting to go to the show with 3 old Kiss fans who had never seen them, and don't spend their days on YouTube scouring videos. The fourth chick was diehard country music fan. Even with the stripped down show, they loved it. They thought Paul was awesome, and how much energy they had on stage compared to most other bands they've seen. Paul's vocals are still rough but once again, no so noticeable live. I warned my friends about the state of his voice in advance, but none of them thought there was anything wrong with it. They were all amazed at how well the band played - many people still think Kiss suck musically and it just a show. In this case, people learned that Kiss rocks with just as much power with or without a big stage show.

The biggest sing-a-long was Beth - people of all ages loved it along with Shout it Out Loud and of course Rock and Roll All Nite. They were pleasantly suprised by Lick it Up. I think this set list is great with 100,000 years gone. Get rid of I Love it Loud and it will be even better. It really moves at a fast pace and 2 hours goes by very quickly.

To me, it was the best I ever heard this band play - there was energy, power and precision. Tommy in particular stood out as well as Paul. You have to respect the professionalism of this band, they could easily have phoned in a performance tonight but they worked just as hard, or harder, as for larger centers I've seen them in. They also came out from under the stage cover to get closer to the crowd and got soaked for doing it. Tommy was a mess and Gene was almost as bad. Paul's wig seemed to stand up better to the rain. :D

It was so much fun to go to a show with a bunch of people who didn't know what was coming next. They really enjoyed the experience and got a kick out of the little things many of us take for granted. It certainly make me enjoy the show, as I really didn't want to go. In fact, the band was so good, I think I'll go see them at Casino Rama in a few weeks. What the hell? - You never know when all this is going to stop and I want to enjoy it while I can. It also makes me realize how irrelevant some of the naysayers are, in the larger context. When you see a crowd like last night respond in such a positive way you can understand why the band caters to the masses.

Here is what one of my friends who was with me just posted on FB:

"Best show ever. KISS played through the driving rain and delivered beyond my wildest expectations. These boys are consummate pros. I think they actually enjoy performing more than the fans loved hearing them. Stanley & Simmons were perfect. The night rocked."

Thanks Kiss for coming to NL - I think the size of Kiss Army NL increased last night.

For some reason I love this shot the most :
So cool that they still managed to squeeze all that gear and even those side risers into that small space. It's like setting up a KISS concert in your garage !!!

So......Here is my short review of the show.

First of all, the opening bands did very little for me. There were certainly people there who enjoyed Fefe Dobson, The Orchestra, Down With Webster, and Smashmouth. However, the only band that I can actually say that pleasantly surprised me was Smashmouth. They played a solid hour long show, which included two Van Halen covers and everything else that you would expect from the band, who were certainly popular a few years back. The other bands ranged from tolerable to downright boring. I won't bother to go into futher details because, admittedly, it wouldn't be fair to the other bands. Generally, the vast majority of openers that I've seen play with KISS are essentially impediments to the real reason that I am attending a show. Perhaps I wouldn't be fair to them. Nevertheless, I believe that the opening bands should have been more rock oriented. That's all I'll say on that issue.

So....on to KISS. They played a set of 18 songs plus an instrumental piece that included guitar and drum solos. When all was said and done the band played for almost two hours. They also unleashed large amounts of pyro, leaving the stage with thousands in awe. The people at the site said that there were 30,000 people in attendance. However, other sources have said that were somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 people in Centennial Field. Regardless, with tickets selling for roughly $100 each, the band likely had a hefty pay day.

The setlist covered all eras of the band, but relied heavily on the 1974-1976 material. They also played two songs from the most recent KISS album, Sonic Boom (2009). As a die hard, I am always rooting for them to play more obscure material. However, I can acknowledge that there were thousands of casual fans there that wanted to hear the equivalent of a greatest hits album. Their wishes were granted.

The stage was...well....bizarre.. It was very compact because the band used the permenent stage on the site. But they were somehow able to make a KISS show out of something that I was intially disappointed with. As they day wore on, you could see the tranformation of the permanent stage into a KISS stage. There were three large video screens and a few rows of amplifiers with a series of smaller video screens.

As a die-hard, I do tend to be more critical of certain things that others may miss. The rain, which began about 30 minutes before KISS began their show was biblical in proportion. Once it came, it did not cease for the rest of the evening. I believe this had an effect on one or two bum notes and a few missed cues because of the slippery stage. Nevertheless the band fought through it and showed great professionalism by not cutting the show short, nor throwing in the towel early. Paul Stanley seemed to be in a great mood. He is still my favourite frontman. Gene Simmons was actually the MVP of the evening. His vocals have actually improved over the last few years. Both Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer were solid, and did the job expected of them. The crowd seemed to enjoy their insttrumental/solo piece halfway through the show.

So, to sum it up.....KISS just rule... :)

Even in the driving rain, they had explosions and fireworks.

Rock icons Kiss, including founding members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, did not disappoint throngs of fans that converged on Grand Falls-Windsor for this year’s Salmon Festival concert Saturday night.

After opening acts Fefe Dobson, The Orchestra, Down With Webster and Smashmouth played under sunny skies, clouds moved in as if on cue, but the crowd’s enthusiasm shone through.

The headliners, known for their outlandish makeup and costumes and spectacular pyrotechnics, performed many of their hits, including “Shout It Out Loud,” “Detroit Rock City,” and “Beth”.

Grand Falls-Windsor Mayor Al Hawkins said the event was huge for the town.

“Grand Falls-Windsor is a concert centre,” he said. “We are pretty happy. When you look at the amount of money people will leave in the town, we are happy.”

Simmons’ partner, Newfoundland-born Shannon Tweed, with whom he stars in their reality television show, “Gene Simmons Family Jewels,” accompanied him.

While official numbers are not yet known, estimates put the crowd in excess of 20,000.

Visitors to the town more than doubled its population overnight, and hotel rooms in the central Newfoundland region have been sold out since the event was announced several months ago.

Police reported no major incidents as of the end of the concert, either at the Centennial Field venue or in Grand Falls-Windsor, however overwhelming demand for product in the beer garden at one point in the evening required intervention by security staff and RCMP.

More major acts are expected for future Salmon Festivals, as the town council in Grand Falls-Windsor recently signed a five-year contract with Moncton-based SRO Entertainment to co-ordinate the event.

And somewhat related, Shannon on the set of Republic of Doyle, a hit CBC show shot and set in St. John's.

I actually enjoyed the clip once it loaded. The live footage wasn't great, but the interview was nice to see.

Just got an email from my cousin who sat with Gene in the AC Lounge on the way back to Toronto yesterday....

**********************************************
Well I didn't know what to expect when I walked up to him in AC lounge. Really really nice. ended up chatting with him for 30 min about everything from Family Jewels to talking about you and your fascination with him. He sat 2 seats over (glad I used my upgrade)from me on plane and slept the whole way with a blanket and drooled. Old geezer. Drank diet coke.

....he was amazing with kids/teens/women who were all over him when he went down in gate area. Told me Shannon is doing Republic of Doyle so he stuck around and he was going to make a cameo appearance but had to play in Boston and Montreal. Only thing he said to me is I shouldn't be wearing lululemon shorts if I am a KISS fan.

Another TV news bit

Make sure to watch the crowd interviews at the end. We can all remember feeling that way, I'm sure.

What ?! They FINALLY dropped 100,000 Years ? Did they play anything interesting instead ? Or was it just a shortened show ?

Shortened show. Hopefully they dumped it for good.

Yes and i thought the show was long enough as it. Longer isn't always better. It was a much better paces show than what I saw in Toronto. I'll see them again in a couple weeks, we'll see what it is then.
