Spinning Born Again by Black Sabbath

Post by battra »

I know there's loads of love here for Tony Martin, which I get dude's great, but the Tony Martin Era (and Hughes for that matter) were a different band for me.

The reason?

Black Sabbath is the marriage of Geezer's Bass and Tony's guitar.

But, back to the matter at hand...I've heard tale of this record sounding terrible and what not, and perhaps my ear being numbed to the brickwalled loudness wars of the aughts, it sounds really good to me.

Tony and Geezer are totally on it.

Ian Gillan is doing well.

Bill's playing is really, really good.

Love this record, at least I do today. No idea what I said about it when we did an episode on it for the DMA.

I love the Born Again record, side 1 is a monster Disturbing the Priest is down right scary , the title track is sorrowful and sad I love it and Hotline should've been a radio hit. When I was 6 or 7 I had a wallet with the Born Again album cover on it back in 1984.

Zero The Hero was in heavy rotation on my local station in late 83/early 84. That song has THE GROOVE.

Great album. I've been a big fan of it since it first came out in '83.

The title track contains one of the most ponderous lyrics ever:
"The grey and plastic retards all floating in circles"

This album is a masterpiece.

Something a little insane about this album. The guitar sounds are so washed out, icy and distant, but articulate. Gillians’ screams are unearthly. I love it.

Remember seeing the band-pic in a newspaper and whoops, what did the drummer from ELO do there....or the guy that used to be in Deep Purple.....

About the album: never really liked it (apart from Thrashed and Digital Bitch...)

I love the "Trashed" in-joke by Mr. Gillan. Very cool.

I have always WANTED to like this album, but I find the production to be quite lacking. For me, it's just a hard album to listen to.

Iommi has finally tracked down the master tapes so expect a remix and rerelease. They did one ten years ago but didn’t have the master tapes so couldn’t remix anything.

If we could discuss any Sabbath other than the Born Again album or the Tony Martin era around here... That'd be nice.

Be that as it may, I think Born Again is solid but not great. Three out of five stars.

Or put another way, it's a little better than Seventh Star but nowhere near the quality of Mob Rules. 8)

Yea Mob Rules RULES....I'd give born again 3.5 stars. I still enjoy it to this day.its not on the level as the first 6 but better than the next 3 and just behind Mob Rules. Everything that came after would be 2 stars at best...maybe 2.5 (Dehumanizer) or 3 (Heaven and Hell) and Sabbath is in my Top 5 bands
