Kiss using teleprompters

Post by sf1996 »

Of all the videos and live shows I've seen, I've never seen the band using teleprompters.
I know Gene would benefit the most if he used one.
He embarrasses himself and the band when he forgets the lyrics, or ad lib's some nonsense.
There's nothing wrong with having the proper lyrics in front of you.
A lot of the big bands use them.
The Rolling Stones have been using them for years.
Good enough for Mick Jagger, good enough for Gene.

This suggestion comes a little late, and besides ... with all the sweaty paint in his eyes, how's Gene supposed to see it? No. Best let Gene stick to what he knows ...

Makes each show he does this unique. Kiss are criticised for being too formulaic. Gene forgetting the lyrics shakes this up. No need for teleprompters.

They used a teleprompter on Kiss Kruise 7. In the video it’s in front of Paul, but probably in front of Gene too. It’s noticeable through out the show, but Lick It Up at the 49:00 mark is very clear.

Kiss is my band,my favorite band, but come on. If you have to use telepromters and fake vocals,it's time to wind it down. Which they are,I guess, anyway. It's just sad to see is all.

If Mick uses them, he doesn't let it affect his performance at all. Halford is the worst. He has no problem leaning down right in front of the teleprompter reading the words, couldn't be more obvious. He moves around only when he actually knows the words, usually a chorus. IMO sad and a rip-off to make fans pay for that. If Gene and Paul use them, at least they are standing at the mic stand anyway.

There is a clip where Paul is pointing at the telepromter to show Gene the lyrics to Shout It Out Loud as he got it wrong from this tour, which I found a little ironic

Were Gene to lipsynch, as well, the teleprompter would be rendered superfluous, if not altogether moot.

Was this the Kruise where Paul was testing his lip-syncing and the teleprompter showed him when to sing and when to lip-sync? There was a different color for the lyric when it was live and when it was a track.

I just saw Priest. Halford is bad. He must need better eye contacts to see the prompters. Alice has them but is super professional with them so you can’t obviously tell. Plus he also uses them as prompts and guides for the various props and things happening on stage.

I saw Blaze Bayley a few years back. He has a big ring binder on the floor with his lyrics and he bends down between each song to flip the pages. It was fucking embarrassing watching it.

KISS has, for the very least…. the last seven years. The neat thing is, they can also show visuals for the click track, stage cues, etc. Many bands use this technology

The words he actually has to sing show up in a different color, so he doesn’t have to think about it.

And even if the vocals are on tape you still have to mouth the right ones.

… and Gene’s vocals aren’t on tape anyway.

Kiss have been using Teleprompters for some time now. Maybe Gene just doesn't give a damn what's on the screen since his vocals are live. For Paul it's about when to sing live and not to.

Axl has been 'using' teleprompter since the early 90's. I've never seen him actually look at them, but a lot of bands with long and changing setlists use them.

Exactly.

If you're not actually singing, disclose it! Or retire.

If you're using a/v to remember the words, disclose it! Or retire.

Disclose everything: New members as original members' personas, wigs...! Or retire.

Non-disclosure is not only immoral, it's a form of fraud.

It's nowhere in the same league as lip-synching, and for me it's just an updated version of singers having a ring binder with lyrics propped up against a monitor...they won't need them most of the time, but they prevent one of the brainfarts everyone gets now and then ruining a song.

There was a funny story about that tour Ian Gillan did with Black Sabbath - he was and is notorious for forgetting lyrics, so had the ring binder at the front of the stage setup. Unfortunately at the first show he hadn't counted on the sheer amount of dry ice Sabbath use as they come on, so walked on and couldn't see a thing for the first couple of minutes...they opened with War Pigs and he ended up just making noises until he could see the words.

I didn't know until recently (this tour) that they used them at all to be honest. It's also strange to see the word "intro" on it in the pic I posted, like they need a reminder there's an "intro" to "Shout It Out Loud" before the singing begins? Just strange.

If you need the teleprompter because your using ear protection and can't hear as well and want to keep time then I guess I don't have a problem with it, although I would say it's barely a step above karaoke. If your using teleprompters because you don't remember the words to songs you've wrote & sang over 2,500 times then I feel you need to retire end of story.

Yep.

I'd imagine that printing the names of the players in the band inside the tour programs, and announcing them loudly from the stage every show could be regarded as full disclosure of exactly who is on the stage, no?

Exactly.

If you're not actually singing, disclose it! Or retire.

If you're using a/v to remember the words, disclose it! Or retire.

Disclose everything: New members as original members' personas, wigs...! Or retire.

Non-disclosure is not only immoral, it's a form of fraud.
Pretty sure Tommy and Eric are known as , well, Tommy and Eric. Not sure where the "non disclosure" thing comes in there.

"If you're using a/v to remember the words, disclose it! Or retire." oh yes, I can imagine someone coming out at the start of the show to tell people "just as a legal disclaimer to avoid idiots accusing us of fraud, we will be using teleprompters on stage tonight".

Yep.

I'd imagine that printing the names of the players in the band inside the tour programs, and announcing them loudly from the stage every show could be regarded as full disclosure of exactly who is on the stage, no?
Yes, but let's be real about the people they are pretending to be. That is the bottom line. There is no way around the fact that KISS are doing a tribute to the 70's era.
