What made you a fan first... The sight or the sound?

Post by Coventry1973 »

Here's a poll for everyone. What made you a KISS fan?
Was it the music you first heard that made you like them, or was it the sight of them that intrigued you to become a fan?
For me it was the music first. I had no idea what they looked like, or the stage show. I first heard ALIVE and instantly fell in love with it. This was back in 1975, when I was 10 years old.

I heard "I Was Made" and I fell in love with that song.
Then a few weeks later I saw the video (I was 10 yo) and for me it was pure magic: my life changed.

Sight. First saw the image of the Demon wrestler debuting and thought thats one of the best designs of a character I have ever seen. Had the volume too low to hear God Of Thunder well since it was late night. I was gonna follow the wrestler now. It wasnt until i rewatched this episode which I taped that I heard the Shout It OutLoud from promo videos that I fell in love with the music. Loved it so much I rushed the next morning to find an album from them.

Still, while their musoc is my favorite and comes in so many flavors, as a lifelong scifi fan I have to say I love the Kiss characters just as much, the Marvel and Image comics etc

I always say: I would love them regardless of how they look like, and to flip a coin at the same time I would love them whether they made music or not. Since its both its a double treat for me

The sight. My uncle had the Destroyer poster on his wall, and I found them mysterious and intriguing, almost dangerously scary to my 7 year old eyes.

But the sound roped me in. I was already into rock music (ELO, Sweet, Queen, Aerosmith, etc) but Kiss had a darker heavier bombastic sound that I hadn't heard before.

Same for me exactly.

So it is both sound and sight.

Sound. Already knew what they looked like, but it wasn't until I heard snippets of Parasite, Do You Love Me, Psycho Circus and a couple of others that I became a fan.

The sound, I loved the raw sound of Alive!
I remember Got To Choose was the first song to really grab my attention.

Sight.

My older brother had a huge album collection, but this cover is what made me grab it, and put it on the turntable.

My first rock band. Probably around 11 years old.
My initiation was Alive II, Love Gun, Double Platinum, the KISS comic (real blood!).
I remember having the 1976 tour bicentennial poster.
Lots of cool visual stimulation.

I saw an ad in a Marvel comic book for something called KISS. I had no idea what or who they were but I thought they looked dark, freaky and somewhat kinky, as much as my child brain could interpret those words. Then I saw another ad in another Marvel comic book - 'KISS, A Milestone' with their names by their faces. Still no clue as to what KISS actually was. Superheroes I guessed. And was 'Ace' a man or a woman? WHO WERE THESE PEOPLE?!

Then a kid in my school who had been to America told me they were a band and he had some of their records. He played me 'I Was Made For Lovin' You' and I was hooked. I went out and bought Double Platinum and ALIVE II and to this day I describe them as my favorite band.

The sight got me, the sound kept me.

Sight. I saw them on the cover of Hit Parader Magazine in 1976 and was mesmerized. The Paul Lynde Halloween special sealed the deal with both sight and sound.

The song Detroit Rock City. The look was probably slightly before, Kiss was one of those bands I always knew existed, but the music cemented my interest as a fan.

The sound - It was Alive along with the first 3 that got me started. My friends old brother's were playing them all the time along with LZ II and Aerosmith Get Your Wings. Then I heard Destroyer which I became more intrigued. The Paul Lynde Show took my fandom to the next level. Seeing them on TV was amazing. RRO came out about a week later and was the first album I ever bought. My life was changed forever. I drove my parents crazy blasting the LPs and requesting an electric guitar. Their favorite words for me quickly became "Turn That Down". It was a great period of my life.

I became a hardcore KISS fan around the time of "Animalize", so it was the sound.

That being said, I can remember being a little kid and seeing a KISS poster with makeup and they scared the hell out of me.

Sound.

I got DP for a Christmas present and knew nothing about the band or this LP that looked like a baked potato.

I put it on out of curiosity and didn't find the inserts for merch with band photos right away. I was hooked at the first song, yep the remixed Strutter '78 that gets slagged on here quite a bit. That was my first KISS moment, so yeah, the sound.

I was always intrigued by them when I was a small kid. But, I became a fan late 1984 for life by simply hearing Heaven's On Fire blasting through the ghetto blaster a the school compound during lunch break. I never even seen they we out of make up until March 1985 on the news, because the only source for music videos back then for us was "Video Hits" on CBC after school, and a Sunday Morning show call "Switchback." The only "metal" the played was Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It", the rest was stuff like MJ, and Culture Club.

I'd say that the sight made me interested to investigate further but the music kept me interested

I was a preteen all thru the original era so all the comics, toys, merch & that cheeseball made-for-TV movie sure helped keep me hooked too!

It was the sound of 100,000 years when I was 10 years old a new kid moved into the neighborhood and we were both drummers I was listening to Hendrix Cooper Steppenwolf etc... (Jazz, swing, bop). I was into vintage Albums at the time and the Alive copy he had was beat up but still cool looking to me , when that drum solo kicked in along with the overall vibe and attitude of the song I was hooked midway through it. So I guess the sound is what hooked me first it was 1988 I was ten and was obsessed with 60s 70s Rock!

Sound. (Technically: logo first, sound second, album cover third).

My cousin had a KISS logo sticker on his bedroom mirror that he made out of red rainbow tape (among some pictures of other bands). I asked him what that was, and he asked me, "You've never heard of KISS?" I said something along the lines of, "No, what is it?" He said, "It's a band", and put on Side 4 of ALIVE! I was intrigued by the intro to Rock Bottom, and when it kicked in I was blown away. He handed me the album cover to look over a bit later.

That was on Thanksgiving 1975, and I borrowed his album until I got my own copy. Been hooked, ever since.

I saw the cover of Love Gun in a record store and bought it in late 80’s. Was too young to have heard or seen anything else about them besides seeing the 3-2-1-Contact Special when I was 3-4 years old (and it scared me). I brought Love Gun joke with me and thought it was going to sound like gnarley heavy metal and was a bit disappointed with how it sounded until Almost Human came on. I thought the whole record should have sounded evil like that. However, I soon began to fall in live with the band, their sound and that album.

The Paul Lynde Halloween Special was the moment for me that merged the sound and vision of Kiss. Prior to that the band was an enigma. The Creem unmasked photos made rounds in my fourth grade class, a neighborhood buddy’s teenaged sister (who never left her room) had some black and white photos taped to her bedroom door, and another neighbor’s older brother showing off the Dressed To Kill album cover like it was some contraband.

I can't remember hearing the band before seeing them. But goddamn, that t.v. appearance was so dynamic and explosive...set to Detroit Rock City...total possession on the spot.

Sound.

About 1976 my younger brother and I were at a store and he showed me a picture of this group of guys with outlandish makeup. I don’t recall even knowing their name. He just kept telling me nobody knew who they really were. I was shocked and didn’t understand it at all.

Over the coming weeks I kept hearing this rock music coming from my younger brother in the back bedroom spinning albums. I was apparently subconsciously listening because the songs started sounding familiar and good. I finally asked who he was listening to and he said KISS and showed me an album. It was the group from the magazine. I couldn’t believe it. Fan from that moment on.

I’d have to pick sight, around the age of 9 years old. I’m pretty sure I’d heard Rock & Roll All Night on the radio at least once before ever seeing their pictures, but it didn’t really click until they appeared in those issues of Howard The Duck and the Paul Lynde Special appearance. I’d already been a fan of Alice Cooper, comic books and monster movies, so seeing them in their makeup & costumes fully appealed to me. My first LP acquired was Rock & Roll Over, followed soon thereafter by Destroyer which had all the gothic excess my nerdy heart desired. I was obsessed for sure for a couple of years there!

By mid-1978, however, I’d discovered Cheap Trick, The Cars and Blondie, so my tastes shifted further into power pop & new wave — but I dutifully picked up each KISS album up thru COTN in 1982.
