60 Best Rock Drummers of All Time: No Peter?

Post by Doose »

DRUM! magazine put out a list of the "60 Best Rock Drummers of All Time" and I'm surprised Peter wasn't on it. He may not be a great drummer, but wildly influential, I think. Definitely he deserved to be on the list before Danny Carey from Tool and Chad Smith from RHCP.

Well, since they listed Neil Peart third and noted that he was a founding member of Rush and had been with them since their self-titled debut album, I wouldn't take the list seriously at all. If they can't get basic facts right, then they have no business making a "best of" at all...That being said: Peter does not belong on the list...

Crap article, badly written and typos galore too. Plus, for extra facepalm points, they have Roger Taylor of Queen listed with a pic of the guy from the Foo Fighters.

But no, Peter wouldn't belong on that list anyway.

I don't think Peter was influential because of his playing, any more than Ace. And yes, Ace in part DID inspire me to pick up the guitar.

In a list of great drummers? Just, no. I don't even like those bands but come on.

Agreed! For early KIϟϟ, he sufficed, but Criss was always a far better singer than he was a drummer, for which there is ample evidence.

Another crap list with zero credibility. I instantly knew it was a joke when I've seen Lars Ulrich being included.

I sincerely hope this is a bad attempt at a joke.

I can't make it through most Tool songs, but Danny Carey's small toe has more talent than Peter Criss ever had at his peak.

Also funny:

"His best-known performance is on the 1986 hit “Tommy’s Drum Solo,” which helped make him a celebrity. Tommy is most known for his work with Motley Crue in the 80s and 90s and his marriage with Pamela Anderson."

And Peter should definetely be on this list!
His solo on Alive! was influential on so many drummers.

No one who was ever in KISS deserves to be on any best of list when it comes to singing or musicianship - despite the fact that they were very influential.

Also - Matt Sorum sucks. No way he should be on this list. A hack who failed upward.

What a shit article and list! LOL! No Buddy Rich??? No Carl Palmer? No Joe Franco or Anton Fig? No Karen Carpenter? Keith Moon needs to be further down the list too. I'll give Bonham #1 but Peart and Palmer need to be #2. These lists always suck.

It could be because the compilers of the list do not feel Peter is worthy of being on the list. They would be right in that assessment. Kiss fans tend to think the whole world thinks of Kiss the way they do.
It doesn’t.

These lists are like the award shows, not really meaningful in any way. Peter had a very unique style and was very influential in the 70's. I enjoy his drumming in Kiss and he is one of my personal favorites. I don't see him as one of the best though, his talent is raw and that is what made his style what it is. Just enjoy it and forget these polls.

People on this board don’t rate Eric Singer, so of course they think Peter Criss should be on the list.

These types of lists are always just popularity contests. Wasn't there some Rolling Stone thing like this for guitarists where they put Jack White and Kurt Cobaine over Eddie Van Halen?

You think that's bad? How about the list (magazine list, not a blog) where they listed "the hundred best rock singers of all time" and Steve Perry was NOT on the list. The whole list is garbage with an omission like that.

If we're honest, none of Kiss' members - from any lineup - belong on a best of list of musicians in any category.
Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer are probably the most skilled ones, but they compete against thousands who play faster and have a more intricate style.

So Ian Paice wrote "Burn" in 1969 and it features his best-known drum solo. This must be a parody or something.

Silly list. It’s all about giving a band the right sound. There are plenty of drummers on that list whose styles don’t do it for me. Peter made his mark on the classic era of KISS and I personally love his drumming on those albums. It’s perfect for KISS.

I would consider Ian Paice in his 70’s heyday as the greatest rock drummer, but his style wouldn’t be right for AC/DC. It’s horses for courses.

Expected Bruford to be #1 but he's not even in the list, absolute madness. Copeland should be in the top five, top three even.

As for Peter, he never did anything particularly memorable or remarkable but at least he wasn't predictable or generic. A solid drummer for Kiss and a more tasteful player than his replacement(s).

Haha, indeed.

Top three should be:

Bruford
Baker
Copeland

In that order.

Moon was a great showman but as a drummer, even his own guitarist didn't like playing with him. Overrated/over mythologised.
Bonham could hit hard but compared to Bruford or Baker, no contest whatsoever.

To be fair Paul doesn't like playing with Peter and look at the shit he gets for that. Keith Moon is number 1 any day of the week for me, though I should say I don't listen to some of the people mentioned here.

Personally I think the two Eric's were better than Pete, though not as well known.

I love Peter so not trashing him at all - actually I love KISS because they all have limitations musically but they are still great.

Peter was #61 if it's any consolation...

But yeah, he should have been in the top 60 if we're talking 60 best ROCk drummers of all time.

For sure. For definite sure.

Dude could play. And sing. A vaild lead vocalist, no doubt. Plus the image. I mean, he was a legend.

And he influenced tens of thousands of kids to pick up the sticks.

So yeah.
