Always enjoyed his take on this classic. He didn’t always hit the mark when playing KISS’s 70’s songs, but this is a great example of Vinnie TASTEFULLY executing a bit of flash.
Although it is NOT “really” live.
This is from the King Biscuit Flour Hour
Nashville 1984… KBFH concerts were always touched up by the artist if need be, just like a “live” album.
If you listen to the raw concert recording,
Vinnie plays something close but no where near as cool and thought our.

He rips off The Crazy Train solo in the middle. VV sure could play and was way better than anyone that came after him. Just explosive.

Love gun solo is so essential part of the song that it CAN NOT be raped like that. Cheez.
Ripping and mushing part of Crazy Train solo in between...Hello?

When Vinnie was on he was on...that solo took the the air with fire and thunder...so much fury in his tone there.

The Stanley/Simmons/Vincent/Carr lineup had such a dangerous & explosive chemistry. The energy the four of them gave off when onstage was simply off the charts. This lineup has always been, and always will be, my fave lineup. Period.

Love it. A little Randy Rhoads quote near the beginning, I think from the "Crazy Train" solo. This should've been the first official bootleg release, or part of a live compilation/retrospective.

This line-up could've been MAJOR throughout the 80's

But Paul wanted to be a third-rate Bon Jovi and Heart, so....great move.

That guy shouldn't have lasted past the first live rehearsal they had with him. Horrible tone and he butchered every classic solo. Wrote some good songs and looked amazing in the creatures makeup and costume though.

This is what I've always thought. Whenever I hear stuff like this I'm just amazed he was ever hired.

My theory is Paul and Gene didn't really understand that kind of playing. It was the 80s and they felt they needed a fast and flashy player, but it wasn't something they could really relate to so they just took the first fast and flashy player that came along like ''okay. good enough''

Vinnie can play really fast and that was a lot of notes. For me it is a little too busy, I would like to hear less notes and more emotion. I certainly give him credit for his ability to shred.

Love it. Vinnie improved several solos in Kiss... Firehouse, Dr. Love, Love Gun... pure energy with melody.
My favorite is Dr. Love from Rio 83 Maracanã Concert... priceless!

Not so sure about that...they had just been in the studio working on Creatures with monster guitar players doing the solos...they knew Vinnie had the fury.

Gene and Paul were still relatively young guys at this time, but they were a generation removed from this kind of flash guitar and musically coming from a different place. Their frame of reference for lead guitar playing would be more like Jimmy Page or Leslie West or guys like that.

I don't know. Maybe it's a dumb theory, but I really have trouble understanding how a guy who plays like this gets hired. He's beyond bad.

By then I was already a fan of EVH and Randy Rhoads especially. Yngwie was just starting out and yet even at a young age those guys were innovative and tasteful as opposed to Vinnie when he was let loose. If Vinnie was a little more melodic and not just fast for the sake of speed I believe that he would have been held in higher esteem...

Yes, I was also a fan of EVH and Randy at this time. What I was trying to say was maybe G&P couldn't tell the difference between incredible players like that and...whatever this noise is. Because their musical sensibility was rooted in an earlier time so it was all the same to them.

That was actually one of the more tasteful, melodic, and restrained solos he did at the time. He usually butchered the solos and played stuff that didn't fit. That stuff in Love Gun actually worked (if you can take off your KISS fan hat, and forget the original for a minute).

KISS on steroids. Vinnie came up with repeating the start of the solo as well. Even Ace was told to do that when he came back in 1996. So much for being true to the original arrangements. They kept in the G in the intro that they started in 1987 as well.

I always liked Vinnie's tone, much more than Bruce's. Yes he played way too fast (which doesn't help with the band playing Love Gun far too fast already to begin with), but I think he was a product of the times. Surprised he included that direct a lift from a Randy Rhoads solo, though.

I think this has been posted before. All of the lead guitarist’s take on this solo. Ace wins for sure although I would have picked another show to highlight it. I actually like Vinnie’s take on it here. The “Crazy Train” flourish is pretty cool. IMO. I don’t care for any of the other guys versions. It is hard for me to like anything other than the classic Ace solos on any of the original albums. That being said, it’s the same with any of the solos that each guitarist created.

This is one of the best tales I’ve heard Vinnie do of an Ace solo.

Ace is many things and one of them is a limited player. He has a very small vocabulary compared to even his peers, much less the slingers of the 80’s.

On the songs he wrote with Kiss, Vinnie plays them extremely well and displays a great degree of tasteful virtuously, but in the Ace solos, not so much.

Here, he takes a classic, puts his spin on it, and adds a tribute to his hero.

This is a great take, especially for the time.

VV is on fire in this solo, it has melody and flash. Easy to see why street musicians like Paul and Gene would feel threatened by his talent.

I think it is both melodic and has some serious fury. And, it's not sweet like a Bruce solo.
