Things you believed as a kid???
1978 I was eight years old and didn't think of KISS as being human but a magical being. I had older friends who would tell me all this stuff about the band. Here are a few things I honestly believed. What are yours?
Gene $immons could not speak but only sing. I was floored when I first seen a interview in which Gene spoke.
Paul Stanley could shoot a laser from his eye.
Ace Frehley was actually from space.
Paul Stanley's guitar could fire live rounds during Love Gun.
They stomped puppies on stage with their boots.
Also, as a side note kids were telling me Rod Stewart had a gallon of semen pumped from his stomach.
Later at age nine my older brother convinced me KISS was pure evil and of the devil. He told me if I continued to listen to KISS I would be carried off in my sleep by the devil. Scared me to the point I burned all my albums and collectables. It would be until 1984 I got back into the band. Killers was my first purchase and I have been hooked ever since.

Re: Things you believed as a kid???
I wasn't a kid (a young teen) ...I believed Ace was potentially Japanese (after seeing him without makeup, circa Summer '76). Why I did was because once I saw what he 'really' looked like I instantly assumed he was Japanese-American. And mainly because of that Japanese text all-over the "Hotter Than Hell" album (possibly celebrating/referencing his & maybe now even Gene's Japanese heritage).
And what solidified this false belief of mine (for awhile) was Ace himself having 'a very good time pulling my leg' about it. He started acting Japanese, bowing, talking made-up/fake Japanese; as I really didn't know any better & he undoubtedly knew that.
After that first encounter with Ace & Peter, I began telling 'other girls' (that were either female fans or ones interested enough) that Ace was really Japanese. And they all believed me, too. However, I did eventually find-out he was actually fooling with me & before too much longer.

I thought they wore costumes and makeup when they recorded albums.
I also thought albums were recorded with all 4 guys playing together, like a concert in the studio.
And last but not least, I thought they were great friends, and even spent time together when they didnāt have to.
I couldnāt have been more wrong.

That Peter died in that car crash in ā78 and was replaced by his son.
The usual one... that Gene has a cowās tongue.
That Paul sang God of Thunder and if the band memberās name was listed on the song, then they were the vocalist.
That Ace was really a woman and the blonde girl in the upper left corner was Space Ace unmasked on the record sleeve crowd pic from Alive II... the fact that she was blonde made no difference:

that they all got along very, very well more so after reading all those 16 magazine articles. i remember one such q & a article about dynasty where one fan asked who was singing dirty livin'. i think the reply went along the lines that it was peter and that he loved singing it if memory serves right. it certainly rings false now.

In the 79s, me and all my little kid friends thought:
That Aceās back was double jointed and that is why he could bend backwards
That Peters upper lip was really split (makeup made it look that way)
That that lady from Creem that was on stage with the band, was a sometime 5th member named Angel
That the guys were a fair amount older than they really were and that is why they wore makeup to hide that fact
That Peter was calm, laid back, and docile.

That the group sacrificed puppies and kitties at performances and threw them into the audience (this was told to me, but I wanted to believe it wasn't true)
That the sphinx on the cover of HITS was a sign of Satan (another story told to me)
That the original members of KISS/Wicked Lester all died in a car crash, the news report of which can be heard in the intro to Destroyer/DRC (yet another mysterious tale)

I was a fan of all things horror and believed in Bigfoot. So, I believed that Gene was hatched from an egg. I think one of the magazines in the mid-70's stuck that little nugget in my mind!

That they had millions and millions of hardcore fans, millions came back to them when they put the makeup back on, and theyāre one of the biggest bands in the world.
Then I worked out they havenāt had a platinum studio album since 1987 and Psycho Circus barely went Gold.
Itās all hype and bullshit.
Damn they werenāt even top ten in terms of selling albums or tickets at their peak in 77/78, let alone being the biggest band on the planet like plenty of delusional fans seem to think.

I read that they were communicating via monitors on stage and believed they use TV screens on the floor where they see each other.
I also thought that they were recording in full makeup and outfit.
I thought that they will continue to release a live album after 3 studio albums.

Re: Things you believed as a kid???
I thought that during the Lick It Up era Vinnie Vincent was planning to take over the United States. A friend of mine, who introduced me to Kiss, fed me all kinds of lies, like all the Kiss guys practicing karate (Eric was the best, Gene the worst). I assume the Vinnie story grew out of Vinnie wanting to be more involved in Kiss, but I don't remember if the "takeover" concerning the United States instead of just Kiss was something my friend told me or if I misunderstood his words.
EDIT:
I also thought that Kiss was a band instead of a project. It wasn't until much later that I learned that whoever had the best feel for a part was hardly ever the person who "officially" played the instrument in the band.

That Kiss owned their huge PA backline and enormous lighting rig and rented them out to other bands when not touring themselves. This was why apparent live 1980's / 1990's videos by Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, etc looked so similar. Nope....

A friend told me, and I believed it, that:
1) KISS rode motorbikes on stage at the start of their show and jumped off them letting the bikes fly into the audience. If the bikes landed on audience members and injured them, well that was just tough luck.
2) Peter chewed razor blades on stage.
3) Gene Simmons puked up on stage.
3) The band had some kind of special masks that had the make up designs painted inside them and they put these masks on before the show, pressed them onto their faces, took them off and the make up would be on their faces. To freshen up the make up during a show they would do the same thing again at the side of the stage.
I also thought Ace was a woman, Gene's surname was pronounced 'Simons' and that they recorded the albums in the studio together with make up and costumes on.

Until the solos came out (when I was 11), I didnāt really think of Kiss members as regular people with separate , adult lives.
I thought they all lived very close together, and imagined that they were best friends, hanging out ,listening to records and watching tv together ā-often in their makeup.
I thought all their wives and girlfriends were close, too.
To this day, I wonder if Lydia and Jeanette ever became real friends or if they were just acquaintances, together when circumstance required it.

I think one of my friends just said āoh noā.SpinningAcorn wrote: āSat Jun 12, 2021 10:19 amWhen this ad came out, I thought for sure Ace was Asian of at least bi-racialjkiss wrote: āFri Jun 11, 2021 6:30 pm I wasn't a kid (a young teen) ...I believed Ace was potentially Japanese (after seeing him without makeup, circa Summer '76).

That would have been greatTwistedTaste wrote: āSat Jun 12, 2021 6:22 amSomething always fascinated me about those Alive II sleeves.sneed78 wrote: āFri Jun 11, 2021 6:50 pm That Peter died in that car crash in ā78 and was replaced by his son.
It would have been pretty cool if the Band members made unmasked cameos in an image like that or something like the backs cover of Alive
