Ace designed Love gun/Alive II stage

Post by lord71 »

Just learned this from 'Black Diamond' -book, by Dale Sherman. Love Gun/Alive II stage was Ace's design!

If that's the truth. Another great contribution to KISS by Ace.

Yes, Paul confirmed in Sounds (UK) that Ace designed the Love Gun stage. Paul designed the Dynasty stage.

Wow. This is the kind of information Paul and Gene give rather sparingly these days. 8)

Paul's stage design sucked. Ace's was much better. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the stage designs from the 80s up to the present have had Paul pretty heavily involved, and a lot of those have been meh.

The Love Gun stage was their best stage, so if Ace was responsible for that, great contribution.

My favorite KISS stages are Spider, Revenge, Animalize, HITS, and Destroyer. The 2009-2010 stage was really cool, too, as was the Love Gun stage set.

The Reunion era stages sucked. RTN was a better take on that idea.

I honestly felt lukewarm about the Love Gun stage. It's 'okay'.

It started the trend of KISS stages being over-lit. KISS' early stages with lower lighting were far more rock and roll, atmospheric and badass.

I think we're talking about a fairly loose definition of the word 'design' here, in much the same way as Paul 'designed' his Corvette a few years ago.

Wtf, all the RTN stage was the same Farewell Tour stage they had been using for four years at that point, and they swapped out some of the fake amps for TV screens with dorky graphics on them that looked somewhat like Windows95 screensavers.

They used that same stage 2000-2008.

The video monitors in place of every other amp was very effective and looked really cool. It was far better than just a bunch of amps there!

Which was only during a few points in the show.

Most of the time they were used like this - which was much more interesting, visually, than what we had seen during the Reunion era. They stepped it up to the next level. Granted, it's not like it was a huge step, but it was enough to give the show more eye candy...

Yet, i was sold on the idea at the time, we would get something similar to LG stage.

Reunion Tour was basically nothing, but a stage with amps. Gene had always been flying, and Paul brought out the LG mini-stage.

The "Love Gun" stage was just a carry-over from the Japan leg of the RARO tour, with a few minor changes. So whoever designed that stage is the one who should get the credit.

I'm the opposite, the EOTR show was great because the whole stage was lit.

Or, Japan was where what became known as "the Love Gun stage", designed by Ace, was first used.

I agree with monkafunk. The LG stage is just the RARO stage added with Sam T. Serpent/cherry pickers/stage lifts.

Not saying he couldn't have done it, but I've never heard Ace mention it nor anyone else in the KISS camp.

He always spoke about designing the logo and the reunion tour face morphs,
but never designing a KISS stage.

Ace has mentioned this in some interview (probably dating back to 70's) from which a quote was lifted in 'Black Diamond' -book.

So does this mean that Sam T. Serpent and the 'cats' in drum riser were also Ace's idea?
He also 're-designed' the stairs.

Love Gun stage is certainly the most iconic. However I really do like the EOTR stage a lot. I'm also very fond of the Creatures "tank" stage.

Ace’s constructive influence in the band is vastly underrated. His creative force was critical to counterbalance for PS’s more—shall we say—“fruitier” tendencies that we see in latter KISS concepts—which began in the Dynasty era and continued into pervasiveness post-Ace.

Paul had also stated Ace was involved with the overall design of the "LOVE GUN/ALIVE II" stage (maybe in an old magazine issue of "CIRCUS" 🤔).

However, how exactly so should someday be determined. And definitely something for Ace to expand upon in detail, plus a question for future interviewers/KISSTORIANS to ask of him.
