Hotter Than Hell best KISS album

Post by KLP68 »

Rainy day so listening to the whole KISS discography. I enjoy Hotter Than Hell the most. Be it the raw production the grittiness. Whatever it is my favorite KISS album. Discuss why you like or hate or indifferent to this album. I would love to here the thoughts.

Great songs, weird production. It is a good album for sure.

Better than anything that came out after 1982 that's for damn sure.

Great album. It’s probably my 4th favourite Kiss album.

1. Dressed to Kill
2. Kiss
3. Destroyer
4. Hotter Than Hell

Great album. Just something about the murky dark sound which is great. It also showcases KISS's ability to rock and um pop!

It is my TOP album from KISS. I love all ten songs and I have grown kind of fond of the shitty production...it kind of fits the attitude and heaviness of the the tunes.

As an overall experience, HTH is probably the most interesting album of the original lineup era. The strong visuals enhance the material and how it sounds, and vice versa. The whole thing feels seedy and wrong....and that's why it's so great. As great as Dynasty is, if HTH looked and sounded like Dynasty, it just wouldn't have that grimy charm to it. It also helps that the band was still really hungry and working together to become the biggest band in the world. It's like a sleazy old horror flick. Polish it up for blu-ray or do a reboot, and you've lost a big part of what gave it power.

Great album but the production makes it hard to listen to. It’s like walking through quicksand wearing concrete boots.

Even so, it’s a top 10 album for me. Got To Choose, Parasite, Goin’ Blind, Let Me Go Rock N Roll, Watchin’ You, all great tunes. Definitely Gene’s album in my opinion.

Probably in my bottom 5 for me, just not a fan. Got to Choose is the only song I care for and I actually like the version with Bruce off Unplugged much better. Just my opinion.

By far the worst of the original era for me. Crappy production, underwhelming opener and quite a bit of filler.

As a kid it was taboo looking at the artwork...very strong visuals. Not my fav album but its good. The production is horrible. The opening guitar on got to choose sounds so amateur I can’t even believe this was a major label album. Just horrendous. Snare drum from hell. Songs are cool...strange ways and watching you are the tops. Sad strange ways wasn’t played...could have been cool on the reunion/psycho circus tours as well!

Second best Kiss album, in my book.
I think the debut beats it, due to having more truly classic tunes - Deuce, Strutter, Cold Gin, Black Diamond, Firehouse.

As kids, my brother got Hotter Than Hell and Ace’s 1978 solo album for his birthday. Each of us always requested KISS records for our birthdays and Christmas each year! Didn’t take us long to have them all in our possession. 😁😁😁

That could have been the start of a lifelong sibling rivalry there: "Wait, you got Ace's for your birthday and I got Peter's?"

As for HTH, it's one of my favourites...it's got a dark, murky seediness about it that they never really recaptured.

Great album but not in the top 10 for me.

I think the crappy production actually works quite well on some of the songs (e.g Parasite and HTH) though overall it irritates me - still better than CoS production of course.

It's the first of 2 KISS albums I heard as an 11 year old in early 1977 on the same day. My first time ever hearing them .
The other album was Destroyer.
I found myself liking Hotter Than Hell more.
To this day it's my favorite studio album.
It gets a lot of flak over the production.
But somehow the front and back cover imagery and the dark cheap production all works.
KISS seemed sinister and dangerous.
It felt like an album you had to hide from your parents.
It is a record that sums up what early KISS was all about.
Once they got really famous they lost that edge and never got it back.

All the above.

Love the album, and I love the sound. Not saying it couldn't have been better, but it didn't have to be. "Better" may have made things worse. IMO "Hotter Than Hell" sounds real dirty, sleazy and disgusting, which is just what 1974 Kiss looked like (I mean that as a compliment), so the sound IMO is imperfectly perfect.

Early Kiss is my favorite because they were still raw and a bit rough around the edges.
HTH captures that era perfectly for me. I love everything about that album.❤️

I don't how it happened but even Paul, and Gene's vocals don't sound right on many tracks. Gene's contributing vocals on Got To Choose are awful. Paul sounds weird on Hotter Than Hell. Gene sounds strange on LMGRR. The only song that actually sounds good on the whole album is Strange Ways. Comin' Home is pretty good too. The rest of it, I don't know what happened. As live tracks there are four of my all time favorites to listen to on that album.

Can't argue it. The whole Kiss story is fascinating with lots of great music throughout various eras, but still...earlier the better for me. And Hotter Than Hell has that hunger and danger and zany WTF? that epitomizes early Kiss. LOVE LOVE LOVE HTH!!!

I almost wonder if the Village recorder in LA had serious monitoring problems as well as weird headphone mixes as the guys laid down vocals...Gene and Paul do sound/sing strange. Its so different then the debut and dressed to kill soundwise there had to be a reason. Engineers doing drugs possibly
Too. Band members to young and naive to speak up.

Neil bogart knew it was bad because he took over on dressed to kill. Again, ery cool songs on HTH but production like shit sandwich.

Not my favourite Kiss album, but a welcome sound every time I play the album or a few songs.

Highlights for me are Got to Choose, Hotter than Hell and Parasite. I've always felt this album feels more garage-y and debut-like than the actual debut! Maybe it's the production. The songs, like Strange Ways and All the Way, sound like the kinds of tunes bands usually write early in their career as they find their sound and maturity.

The album's production means I prefer every song's Alive version to the studio version, though. Especially Let Me Go, which is one of my least favourite tunes regardless.

It's a strong album song wise (when compared to Dressed To Kill) but I think KISS is the better album by far. Had HTH had a decent production it would be better. Never cared for the title song either.
