I'm sure you'll probably catch some flak from a few people for your post. But I think you hit the nail right on the fucking head here.

tommy thayer is just as important as vinnie vincent, bruce kulick and the two eric's to the band's legacy. an all around guy who's paid his dues. i won't say i'm a big fan but he seems ok. what i'm not a fan of is him wearing the you know what.

Hi, my name is John and I’m a Tom Thayer fan. I’m certainly not a “lifelong” fan of his. Fact is, if he was never involved with KISS - John very well may have had no idea Tom even existed. But goddammit - he’s in the biggest band in the world; I’ve met him twice, and let me say again .... he’s in fucking KISS. Respect given/respect due. He’s a good egg. He’ll do you right. A respectable fellow. Again I say: he plays guitar in KISS.

Not the real Kiss. But an incredible facsimile thereof!

This isn't even remotely true.

Not even close.

KISS would have been dropped from the label if Lick It Up hadn’t have been a hit.

Vinnie’s songs have been setlist staples ever since they were recorded.

None of Thayer’s songs even lasted more than one tour.

There are different types of "importance". Just this week, we've had Criss fans claiming that songwriting is irrelevant, it's what the person contributes to the band. Thayer has contributed professionalism, reliability, consistency and the ability not to be a dick to either the fans or the organisation. Something his predecessor couldn't pull off. He's also remained gracious to his predecessor despite many insults being lobbed from the Frehley camp.

Now some people here might snort and say "I don't want my rock and rollers to be reliable and consistent" and that's a valid viewpoint if you're 15. The simple fact is that Thayer has kept his place and delivered the goods year after year after year and is now a wealthy man because of it - and we ALL know G&P will replace anyone who they feel doesn't cut it. So is Thayer important to Kiss? Absolutely and without a doubt. Is he more important than Bruce? Debateable. Is he more important that Vinnie Vincent - I'm a VV nutswinger and I'd say YES he is more important to Kiss than VV ever was.

The whole "he's not a rocker" thing is pure nonsense to anyone past their teens, or at least it should be.

I like him and think he was the perfect guy for PC, SB and Monster (and I mostly like those albums). To be honest, I think he's been a better guitarist for KISS in the last 20 years than Ace would have been if he'd stayed, though in an ideal world they would have gone back to the Revenge lineup post reunion.

The biggest issue I have with him and Eric is the makeup and that isn't of their doing.

Not a fan necessarily, but he's cool. IMHO he's a great co-writer with Gene and Paul and it's a shame Kiss hasn't concentrated on new music more.

Also, the more I see Tommy being his own man - instead of G&P's puppet - the more I respect him. It was great to read his honest thoughts about Sonic Boom and Monster.

My take on Tommy: If KISS hadn't hired him, they would've hired another nice, reliable guy from a KISS tribute band.

And Kisstory would be no different.

I have no big complaints about Tommy, but I can’t call myself a real fan either, since I know I won’t follow his career post-Kiss.

Always liked him since the 04 tour - he won me over with that setlist and playing those older classics. Then the kicker was in 2014 in Scranton PA - he went out of his way during Rock and Roll all Nite to bend down and give my then 6 year old son a pick and flick another to my 9 year old daughter. That was as cool as it gets.

He fits what Kiss has wanted to do over the past two decades. And you can decide to take it or leave it. He does appreciate his place in the band and has followed Eric Carr as a great ambassador with the fans. Once you meet him, you cannot help but look at him more favorably even if you don't regard him as an essential player in band history. You go to see the show nowadays, and he will deliver well enough live.

He seems like a good guy and does his job well. I respect that. Unfortunately the Spaceman makeup looks terrible on him.

I have to agree with a comment made before - who cares if he is a nice guy and does what he is told?

There is something to be said for all the great guitar heroes and virtuosos, who were known to be assholes - but that brought incredibly creativity and songwriting that Tommy just isn't remotely capable of.

I will take one of them over a nice guy.

I like Tommy a lot as a person.

I was a Black 'N' Blue fan back in the 80's.

I like a lot of the songs he's co-written with the band.

I've got no problems with him in the Spaceman make-up and costume.

I think he plays the parts better than Ace can these days. Far better.

Having said all that, am I a Tommy Thayer fan? I would buy a Tommy Thayer solo album (he and I have a lot in common in terms of musical tastes).

Am I a fan? Yeah, a little. I'm a much bigger fan when it comes to Bruce.

The chorus is taken from Morningwood's "How You Know It's Love" unless it's an amazing coincidence. I'd like to think Tommy is a fan of Morningwood, they were awesome.
