Revisiting KISS my ass

Post by DoggFather »

While still hard at work finishing the new KISS room, I use that occasion to rediscover stuff I haven't listed to in years.

Yesterday, I pulled out KISS my ass...oh my. Some OK stuff on it but lots of junk!

Rock and Roll all night, ugh...

Strutter by Extreme...absolutely horrible.

Calling Dr Love...no words

I like ANTHRAX’s version of “She” the most on it.

For me, the closer the song was to the original (and some were very true) the less interested I was. Therefore Rock n Roll all Nite gets the win for me!

Rock and Roll all Nite always gets voted as worst on the album or best on the album!
It's the latter for me.

Calling Dr. Love is fantastic. A stellar lineup knocked it out of the stratosphere. The problem with the KMA album is that, for the most part, the songs are approximations of the originals which were near perfect. What makes the Shandi's Addiction workout so compelling is that they ditched the original completely, and created something new.

It's somewhat reassuring that a middle-aged man constructing a KISS room hates it. That's precisely the point.

Agree with this... love Anthrax, but a spot on remake on a KISS sanctioned tribute album to themselves is pretty boring. I personally think the Toad version of RARAN is GENIUS, and would've made a better closing credits tune for the Detroit Rock City movie, vs the Nothing Can Keep me From Finding My Way Back to You drek that ends it. The bittersweet melancholy take on RARAN took some thought to arrange, and they made it altogether awesome on their own.
Otherwise, Black Diamond is a highlight... and even though Gin Blossoms' C16 is pretty faithful, it kind of fit them at the time. They kind of made it their own little power pop grungey 90's ditty.

My mini review:

Deuce: Okay....nothing special
Hard Luck Woman: Okay...again nothing to love or hate here
She: Well done by a band with a good track record...just not a song I particularly care for.
Christine Sixteen: Not so good
Rock and Roll All Nite: Terrible
Calling Dr. Love: Don't care for the style of music, but it is well done. Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it
Goin' Blind: Subpar
Strutter: I like it. Love how Gary sounded a bit like Paul at the end.
Detroit Rock City: Pretty good. Great song for the Bosstones
Black Diamond: My favorite, great track
Unholy (bonus): Better than most of what ended up on the US release. I like how the band incorporated IWMFLY in to the song

I actually forgot about that one. I think it's in a different category for me since it completely lost the lyrics; however, I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I love any covers that stray as far from possible from the original. Thats why I dig the Dr. Love and RaRAN covers.
Nothing more boring than a cover that sounds like the original.

Garbage.

The only ones that work are Deuce, Strutter, Black Diamond and Unholy on the import.

Going Blind and Dr Love are just horrible. She and Plaster Caster could be any anonymous teenage garage band in America.

The whole project was flawed from the start - let’s get all these young hip bands who sell records to say how cool we are and we’ll get popular again by parasiting their fans!

Yeah, the whole project was pretty lame. I like Hard Luck Woman and She. They got Garth, but not many big names like Gene said would be on there.

I remember liking black diamond and I thought Lenny Kravitz did a good job on his song which was Deuce right. It's been so long I can't remember but you're right Black Diamond was really good.

If you're gonna record a cover you've got to either make it your own, or do it better than the original.

So for me, RARAN, Calling Dr Love and Black Diamond are are great because the artists made the songs their own and She gets the thumbs up because it's actually better than the original studio version.

This always felt like a wasted opportunity, with some of the other artists and bands that could have been used instead.

This!

Though I never liked Dr Love on this one. But I do love Dinosaur Jr's Goin' Blind! Die Artze is also fun, if just for the novelty of being sung in german.

Overall I think Kiss My Ass is pretty awesome. The more the arrangement is changed up the more appealing a cover song is generally going to be to me. If I want to hear the original arrangement I'll just listen to the already established version, thank you very much. If you're going to do a cover song that's great. If you want me to think it's impressive, make it your own. If you just copy the original then what's the point? Just do it live in concert if that's the case. If you're going to cut a studio version I want to know it's your version

I love how this LP turned Rock & Roll All Nite into a campfire country song, I love the industrial spin on Calling Dr Love, the funky take of Deuce, the groove of Strutter with little melodies from other Kiss tunes thrown in for good measure. This is a fun album. Good stuff

Agree with all of this... most of these "alternate" takes were fun. The idea that "Gene had no clue..." by not hiring a bunch of hair metal bands to do carbon copies? No thanks. Zzzzzzzzz.... Bob Kulick had that ground covered. Sure, not getting a Pantera was a miss... but at the time, something so obvious was likely shot down by Pantera's mgmt.

Rock & Roll All Nite is the best thing on the record. Great reworking of the song, turning it into a moving ballad almost.
Like Dr Love as well, that riff sounds so good when sped and roughed up.
She, Hard Luck Woman, Goin Blind, Strutter, all sound too much like the originals. I would rather listen to the KISS versions
