Gene`s 1978 Solo--
old Andy is looking at the back of Gene`s solo album and reading off the long list of people that Gene thanked‘ and he wanted to make a thread and ask you all if you think Gene was really serious--?? he says it still throws him when he sees Donny & Marie listed..

I didn't realize he thanks Totie Fields on there. That's pretty funny.
Also, it's interesting to look at that now and see all the names I recognize but would not have known at the time.

And I’m sure Gene would have wanted to deflower Marie.

Me too. I really like the eclectic nature of the album a lot. The only songs I skip are True Confessions, See You In Your Dreams, and When you Wish. I really like the rest of the album.

There's times when I think and this is the most polarizing Kiss album in the entire catalog. Some years I would love it, then I hated it, then I was okay with it now I don't even know where I stand with it anymore it's just a weird album. Polarizing for me at least. Peter's is better now.

Re: Gene`s 1978 Solo--
I remember reading that Gene wanted Donny & Marie, Sammy Davis Jr., Dinah Shore and Shaun Cassidy to sing on his album.
..Paul was right. Gene was starting to get lost in Hollywood as early as 1977-78.
His album made me check out Van Halen, Cheap Trick and Aerosmith.
There was a fan online who had his Gene 78 album signed by many of the artists who appeared on the album.
..I thought that was pretty unique.

Yup. Gene and Sean Delaney claimed they had all four of them lined up and ready to go.
I think the offers were sent and none of them responded.

Gene boasts that he invited The Beatles? I could invite The Beatles. They would never show up but's that's missing the point. That's nothing to boast about. Only recently did I discover who Michael Benvenga is (spelling). I still don’t understand why his name would’ve been listed on Peter Solo album and not Stan Penridge (spelling) whom I believe has song writing credits on all of his solo album tracks.

All kidding aside, one can argue that Gene's "thank you" list was a genuine extension of who he really is. Deep down, he is a mama's boy, and his mom raised him to be kind and gracious. You can tell that especially in early interviews, including Mike Douglas 1974. As "scary" as he was trying to be, slouching in his chair and attempting to be edgy, he was well-spoken and polite. He can have an asshole streak, no doubt, but I think he's good at his core.

Re: Gene`s 1978 Solo--
Totally agree. Yes, he may be “greedy” - but he grew up dirt poor. He may be a womanizer - but he grew up with abandonment issues because of his father’s treatment and rejection of him and his mother. Not saying these are “free passes”, but it is easy to see why these became Gene personality traits.torgotheme wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:35 am All kidding aside, one can argue that Gene's "thank you" list was a genuine extension of who he really is. BUT !
The way he tears up talking of his mom’s nazi experience, and her total devotion to raising him properly all on her own, his love for the freedoms of living in America and his administration for those who put others before themselves for the greater good, like servicemen, doctors, police and firemen, & compassion for the sick and dying, especially children, shows the real man unhampered by his “attempt” at being a edgy badass.
I’ve seen all Gene’s movies, he’s not THAT good of a actor, those tears are real.

The problem is that you can't hear a single one of the guests. Ok, maybe Cher, but then its hard to understand what the hell she is even saying. If you think of how iconic the EVH guitar solo is in "Beat It", you have to wonder why you can't hear Joe Perry or Rick Neilson or anyone else on the album. You can't hear any distinctive background singers -think of how clearly you hear Mick Jagger in "You're So Vain", for example. What was the point of having so many guest stars if you couldn't hear a single one of them?

Re: Gene`s 1978 Solo--
I've always liked Gene's solo album. I remember a review written when it was released that compared it to Alice Cooper, and I can see that. I also agree that it'd have been nice to be able to hear the guests. They all had a signature sound/voice and they don't seem to stand out at all. Overall though, they're good songs and there's some irony in a lot of it; the demon character singing When You Wish Upon A Star.
BTW, if I remember right, Gene said at the time that they tried to get Lennon and McCartney but it "didn't work out."

For Gene, I think it would have been more about bragging rights about having two Beatles on the album, a selling point and something he could lord over the other 3 than caring what they played on the album. If Paul and John played kazoos Gene would say "that's a take" Genes entire thank you list looks like a huge name drop.

Good point. I think Sean did a fine job & probably not everyone credited actually made the final album cut. And besides, it was 1978 ...four solo albums at the same time was quite an advanced concept. I almost feel anymore extreme detail we would've been completely overwhelmed.Ace of Bass wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 12:28 pmGood point. For him to basically boast about who is on the album I guess. It's the worst of the 4 solo albums. Maybe if the guests really stamped their mark on the album, it could have been better. Probably not though.FlyingInA747 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 11:45 am The problem is that you can't hear a single one of the guests. Hopefully, someday 1976-1979 will get cracked wide-open. There is so much we don't know about from this period, still. "Ken Sharp, Ken Sharp ...where art thou, Ken Sharp?"
