I love BK but it's Stevens here. His work with Deadland Ritual alone is evidence enough.

I vote Bruce. Even though I know what Steve Stevens looks like, I also know that he did not play those wonderful leads on Crazy Nights.
Again, I'm voting for a familiar candidate.

I think it's fair to say that MOST name guitarists were far better than the guitarists KISS had in their band.

Bruce is a really good player. I'm not even a fan of that era of the band but this isn't crazy like EVH vs VV.Grand Classic wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 12:23 pm I think it's fair to say that MOST name guitarists were far better than the guitarists KISS had in their band.

Bruce is really good and you are right - this isn't as pathetic as EVH vs. VV, but I still stand by my position. Even in a hair band, someone like Nuno Bettencourt is miles above Kulick. In the Suds wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 12:52 pmBruce is a really good player. This poll is much too close, so far. And in this sort of race, there's no silver medal for finishing second!

Yeah, 'cause CC Deville and Slash were such great lead players...please...Vinnie and Mark could wipe the floor with most of the lead players out there and Bruce was no slouch either.Grand Classic wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 2:28 pmNot even close. What's hysterical about this poll is I like Stevens a lot...he's a hell of a rhythm player and had a great sound, but up against Bruce?
Nothing Steven's did in the 80's comes close to a Kulick lead.
Yes, I do like what he has done with Deadland Ritual but what do we have so far? Two songs?

For fuck sake, even Paul what a mess Mark St. John was. Couldn't play the same thing twice. White Tiger sucked too. He could play fast, but was nothing special.

Really? Do you have the 3 shows Mark played with KISS in soundboard quality to compare? He was fired for upstaging Paul...even Bruce will admit to that.Grand Classic wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 2:40 pm

And while White Tiger will never go down in metal history for being a great album, Mark's playing on it is fantastic.

It's an OK lead...it's not in the same class as something Bruce did on say, Love's A Deadly Weapon or even Hell or High Water...let alone an Unholy or King of Hearts.

Not really...that is some outstanding lead work by Mark on that tune.
Again, way ahead of most of his peers of the time period.

No, he wasn't. You either must be President Of The Mark St. John fan club or you are completely clueless about the guitarist of the era.

While I am a fan of Mark and he was a fantastic guitarist in his time, he was definitely not ahead of his peers. Haven’t you heard of Paul Gilbert or Michael Angelo Batio?

I'd rate Mark (and Vinnie) much higher than Michael who really was a gimmick player. Paul Gilbert is a good one...is he better than Mark or Vinnie technically? I'm not sold on that.doombies wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 3:20 pmWhile I am a fan of Mark and he was a fantastic guitarist in his time, he was definitely not ahead of his peers. Hell the guy KISS could have hired - but was too young at the time, Doug Aldrich is better than Mark and Bruce.

Okay but with Stevens it's not just about the solos. It's his whole approach to playing guitar. He does cool stuff throughout the songs.

I concur. Besides Ace - kiss has had a very uninspiring litany of guitarists. (I say this and really enjoy one of Vinnie’s albums: LIU & one of Bruce’s: COS. For the most part G&P just wanted some who would kiss their asses. We are on a forum from a band that's best day was too long ago to remember and that probably stayed a few decades too long at the party.

Stevens. Those Billy solo LPs rock more than Asylum to CoS IMO !
Exactly!

Re: Bruce Kulick Vs Steve Stevens
You know I never paid any attention to Billy Idol songs, the hits are so overplayed and typical Rock radio fodder that I have entirely dismissed him. Every single cover band where I live will play "White Wedding". This has put Billy Idol in the same category as a Tommy Tutone, Loverboy or Honeymoon Suite in my head. But this thread got me watching a few videos of Steve Stevens and...alrigghhtt, I get it. I had seen him before but never listened to him play. Hearing him talk about his riffs and stuff is actually really interesting.
It made me think how instantly recognizable his riffs in those songs are, even if I don't like the hits. Somehow I never took note of the solo in "Rebel Yell", oh man. I guess I really have tuned out everytime I've heard the song. I've never willingly listened to that song before yesterday.
Kind of a pointless side note here but hey, thought I'd add that.
