Cobham is a better player, but Peter is a better writer. Oh wait....

If you've never heard of Billy Cobham, is voting for Peter legit?

Maybe these polls will spark an unlikely discussion about jazz fusion. I like The Crusaders, Passport, and Stanley Clarke. What kinda jazz fusion do you like?

Visions Of The Emerald Beyond by Mahavishnu Orchestra would be my favourite album. (Post Cobham, I know.)

The whole album's well worth checking out - think the entire thing's up on Youtube - Bolin plays on most of the tracks.kisswah wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 11:10 amGreat! The whole fusion thing hasn't aged well, in my opinion. I can still listen to "Blow By Blow" or "Wired", but Mahavishnu & Return To Forever just sound dated to me.

On the broader subject of fusion, I always liked Jean-Luc Ponty and particularly his stuff with Allan Holdsworth
Especially the mind-bending guitar solo on this one.

These are great tunes. But I really would like to hear them with "Pewter Criass on the draaaauuuums" ... just kidding
Is it Billy Cobham on Larger Than Life?

Peter's awesome I don't think anyone's really comparing them. There's no need to, they do different things.
This and the Jaco thread are just parodying the VV vs EVH thread . That one was for real and totally crazy.

Wow, just nu I realized I haven't listened to either Jeff Beck album in around 5 years, how did this happen? I will spin those CD's today, thanks for the reminder.Wiped Out 78 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 11:46 am The whole fusion thing hasn't aged well, in my opinion. Regarding MH and RTF, they are both in my top 10 artists of all time, but the weakest point with atleast RTF is Chick Corea's sometimes unfortunate choice of Keyboard sounds. I'm sure they all sounded cool in 1975, but nowadays some of them make me and others I know think of the music to Super Mario (the classic Super Nintendo version). Those really didn't age well, no.

How about comparing the composing skills of Mozart and Paul Stanley next? I sometimes wonder what some of you do during the day.

That’s cool! Even though the rhythm/tempo seemed to slip a little bit around the 37/39 second mark, it is awesome. So that’s Tommy Bolin doing all of that lead guitar work? Love Brolin’s work with Deep Purple, James Gang and his solo stuff.Glasgow Kiss wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 10:58 amI'm a big fan of Tommy Bolin who plays guitar on that, as well as on this one by Alphonse Mouzon:

I know what you mean - it does flounder for a couple of seconds around there. I reckon the bed tracks for a lot of that kind of stuff were laid down live, and they've just let that one slide.scottbassist wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 9:58 amThat’s cool! Yeah, Come Taste The Band is an amazing album...there's a good argument to be made for it being less of a Deep Purple album and more of a dry run for Whitesnake though! It would have been interesting to see what Bolin would have got into if he had lived - his solo albums are fantastic too.

I love CTTB. I prefer Burn but CTTB is a classic, as well. You know, I never thought of it before (amazingly), but wow, what if Bolin had lived longer and played with Coverdale in Whitesnake? That would have been wild.Glasgow Kiss wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 11:24 amI know what you mean - it does flounder for a couple of seconds around there.
