That’s the great Paul Schaffer, he’s always like that.

Pretty cool video. But no disrespect to Shaffer, Anton, etc., but I always thought it was corny for Letterman’s band to always play alongside the featured guest band. Letterman’s band are/were great players, sure, but the 2-for-1 Band-at-the-Same-Time thing was overkill. You have Shaffer’s group playing almost on an opposite side of the room as the guest band. Just ... weird.

That said, Gin Blossoms were fantastic at the Tulsa Hard Rock a few years back. They absolutely crushed headliner Smash Mouth to utter pieces.

What did you expect, it was Smash Mouth.

I went for Gin Blossoms and my wife went for Sugar Ray (they played between GB and SM.) GB and Sugar Ray wiped the floor with Smash Mouth. All I expected from Smash Mouth was for the singer to be sorta in key with his band for some of their set. Nope. When Smash Mouth played in the key of A, the singer sang in the key of B. He sang a whole step sharp or flat all night long, with the occasional 3 1/2 steps-sharp note. Lol!

Great performance! But, this is the thing that stands out the most to me about this clip. Gene and Paul are HUGE!

Also, noteworthy (to my knowledge) that Gene's primary stage position was stage left.

Very nice performance. They were so young (and cool) here.

This last fake jumping on a bandwagon style for KISS before their return to spandex and makeup was really working for Gene.

Should have gone with this style in 1983 instead of the purple cardigans and grandma-makeup.

Alternate spoken part = self sensorship for national TV.

The KMA era is a neat little time capsule. Hard to believe it was almost 30 years ago!
