Don’t worry. Someone will snag the audio off YouTube, press it on vinyl, create a shiny candy like irresistible album cover, throw in a booklet and a few 8x10’s and it can be yours for $500.

I love stuff like this. This is the kinda Kiss krap I want to buy, pressed onto lovely black vinyl. Mmmmm.

And the Daisy show, and the goddamn Bell Sound demos. And Anaheim 76, and Houston 77 and on and on.. After Hello Kitty, Mount Kissmore and the endless mountain of other Kiss branded horseshit we’ve had to endure over the last twenty+ years, is it really so much to ask?!?

Yes, it’s not a soundboard, but if Kiss would continue to release vintage stuff, this could fit in a series.

I"m far more interested in the backstory of this.
The person who was there and recorded this, and now decided to release it, must have some pretty interesting stories to tell.

This was leaked awhile ago, and I seriously doubt it was by the person who recorded it, which would've been the band themselves. Would be interesting to know the trail it took to reach the public, though.

The sound quality on this isn't worth releasing professioinally on a major label. The mix is horrible - you can't hear most of the vocals.

You're probably right but the uploader writes
"I was reading one web site and they claim this tape and the Daisy gig were released by someone close to the band during this time."
There is a small chance but I doubt it..

Ok... yeah i was reading 'March' instead of 'May' for this recording so i was thinking they were recorded in the same month. I've now put down the pipe so I'm all good now.

Actually, I don't.

DTK, RARO, Revenge - great mixes

KISS, Dynasty, Creatures, Asylum, Psycho Circus, Sonic Boom - good mixes.

But that rehearsal recording, you can barely hear the vocals. It's truly awful.

For a rehearsal tape from 1973 from a band that had no money, I think it sounds pretty good. I have rehearsal tapes from bands I've played in from the 90's that don't sound this good.

I mean is the band recording this or someone in the Loft randomly doing it and then when it was over they just took the tape with them and held on to it

Yes it is. It was recorded by Eddie Solan using the same board he mixed KISS's live club shows.
To me, it sounds as if it was stereo mic (or mix) of the entire room, instead of each instrument being mic'd. This is why this recordings sounds muddy and distant in places.

A true "soundboard" recording would have each instrument mic'd, eq'd and balanced - like the Daisy and Cleveland tapes.

This sounds like a quick and dirty recording of the room.

This is absolutely NOT May 1973.

I held this tape box in my hand when Curt Gooch and I unearthed it in 2001 and there was no indication of the date of the recording anywhere to be found. Strictly speaking, the exact date can only be guessed at given the content of the recording. At one point, you can clearly hear Peter say, paraphrasing, "We'll get it together for you, Richie." ...which is almost certainly Richie Wise. That dates the tape well after May '73 as Bogart had not signed the band yet then, and obviously would not have assigned his Buddah-era colleagues Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner to produce.

To me, the most logical timeframe for this recording is sometime in September '73 after KISS's August 31/September 1 gigs at Coventry but prior to KISS recording rough run-throughs of their material for Kerner/Wise to review heading into recording of the debut album.

Here is the irrefutable fact (per Eddie Solan): This recording was done through a mixing board. Period.

Anyone is now free to apply their own definition of "soundboard" to the equation.

If it was run through a mixing board then it was an epic fail since the vocals are almost non-existent in the mix.

I believe he told you that, but I've been an audio engineer for nearly 250 shows and just as many studio sessions, so maybe he was wrong. It was in fact nearly 50 years ago. It doesn't sound like a Soundboard recording. I would put money down that it was 1 or 2 SM 57's recording the entire room.

2014, at least that was when I found it, just before Christmas. On Youtube that is. It would have been available in other ways before that.

Agreed, if this was a soundboard whoever mixed this hasn't a clue what they are doing. I say it's ambient mics. They could have made this better with a Fostex 4 track for fuck sake.

Just because a board was used doesn't make it a "Soundboard" I assume that the board was only used to get a stereo input and then it was fed to a 4 track cassette recorder

I agree, having done live shows myself as well as managing a recording studio, this does sound like 2-3 mikes recording the room run straight through the board unmixed into his reel to reel. (I think Eddie had several Sennheisers he used back then.)

Now why Eddie just ran the mikes unmixed through the board, who knows. Maybe he set it up and had to leave so it sat unmanned? I suspect Eddie recorded a lot of these rehearsals and reused the same tape over and over, so he may not have focused on close-miking anything etc.

I wanted to make sure everyone knew that it was in fact run through his mixing board, irrespective of the quality of the audio.

That makes more sense.

If I had to guess, he used 2 sennheisers ran throught the board and then down to the cassette recorder. I bet the recorder had only 1 input and why the board was used

I hear ya LOUD N CLEAR!!!! Too bad the Kiss Kamp cannot sir.

:D Thx for that.
