My top 3 are CREATURES, UNMASKED and CARNIVAL OF SOULS, so my answer is no. But I listen to all eras.

I've been wondering, lately, if I'm the only one who leans mostly towards KIϟϟ, sans makeup. Is anyone else out there who loves the unmasked years ... as much as I? ... I must know!

Love it. The era I got into the band. I adore the 70's and the original band but my Kiss was Stanley, Simmons, Kulick & Carr.

You're not alone! COTN with 85 cover was how I bought it first, so I place it with the unmasked era...

I listen to it all, but I feel the albums got a lot patchier in terms of overall quality in that period...LIU was a lot more good than bad, Animalize was a disappointment a few songs aside, Asylum seemed like a welcome return to form at the time, CN was the first non-make up album I thought Gene's contributions were better than Paul's, HITS was pretty terrible aside from a handful of songs, Revenge was one where when it was good it was great and when it was bad...wasn't...and I really like COS despite it being a fairly cynical attempt to go along with prevailing trends.

When it comes down to it I suppose there are always parts of albums you can pick apart...the debut had Love Theme and Kissin' Time, Destroyer had Great Expectations and so on...for me though, the process of doing that gradually became a lot easier as the '80s progressed.

As a teenager of the 80's, the unmasked era is most def my preferred and most listened to era. I would go so far as saying that Eric Carr joining and sadly leaving KISS is the reason why I started and ended my love affair with the band.

Based on the question, I don't know how to answer the poll. i very much like the non-makeup era, but I definitely don't prefer it. Also not sure I could answer all eras since I hate the current band...

Hmmm 🤔 I’d like to pick two answers here.
No, I don’t prefer albums from the non- makeup era, but at the same time
I listen to all eras.

The albums up to and including LIU are my favorite, but I do very much enjoy Animalize, Asylum, CN, Revenge ,CoS and PC....
Not crazy about HITS, SB or Monster. It has nothing to do with makeup . The songs just never grabbed me on those albums.

I got into the band during the makeup years, but I much prefer the music from the non-makeup years. By quite a long way too. To my ears, Creatures and Lick It Up were a huge upgrade, musically. But each to theirs, and all that.

I chose... listen to all eras. I have all the studio albums, Alive 1-3, the solo albums, DP, KILLERS, ST&H, and the unedited Unplugged all in one playlist that I listen to on shuffle a lot. I don't skip most unless its from HITS. I love to spin an equal amount of make up vs. non make up albums when I decide to hear a complete album.

Some hits and misses within that era. Some good songs were recorded. Overall, glad when it was over and celebrated in 1996.

My answer is no.

I really only listen to Lick It Up from the non-makeup era. It is the only album I can put on and listen to all the way through.

The rest of the non-makeup era is basically just a Paul Stanley song list if I want to listen to anything else. There is only about 2 Gene songs from the non-makeup era I listen to other than the Lick It Up album and they are Domino and Unholy.

On the whole, I prefer the make up era and would be fine if Kiss stopped in 1980 after Unmasked and Peter's departure or 1982 after Creatures and Ace's official departure. The pandemic's given ample opportunity to re-listen to the non-make up era and increase my love for Asylum, HITS and Revenge (among others).

The non-make up era has great singles but, as others have said, patchy albums. That's similar to most popular bands of the era. Few hard rock or hair metal bands made great records. The 1980s were about singles, compared to the 1970s' focus on great albums. MTV versus FM radio, in short.

Sometimes I find the line from the make to non-make up eras almost impossible to draw with the exception of Paul and Gene's vocals. Lick it Up is also the transitory piece. If you go from Creatures to Animalize, you almost have two completely different sounds (and bands!).

For me I love KISS because of the debut to Creatures + Psycho Circus. When I think of KISS I'm thinking of the 70's era. I became obsessed with the band when I was 13 and now almost 12 years later the Non-Makeup stuff isn't as good as I used to think it was. I will still put on the albums and enjoy most of the songs. "A Million To One", "Turn On The Night", "Forever" and "Tears Are Falling" are among my top favorite KISS songs. But I don't view the albums in anyone near the same regard as the classic stuff.

and stuff like Animalize that I used to like I think is mostly junk now. But songs I used to hate like "Any Way You Slice It" and "Secretly Cruel" have grown on me hugely. So it's strange :cheese:

To me there are two eras of KISS - the first album up to Carnival Of Souls, then everything that came after. Old and new testament KISS.

Everything up to Carnival was valid and they were a real band. Beyond that, a poor imitation. Proper KISS vs cabaret, plastic KISS.

I am nearly a total un-masked listener. . . . . Well, COTN to COS. Really only a handful of songs from the original four get any airplay at my place.

They do with some comprehension

Yes make up only
No make up
All eras
I don’t like Kiss

While the last option seems silly on a Kiss forum, meet some of the members and it will make sense

I lost interest after Ace left. Was let down for many years. I listened and liked the singles from the no make era but didn’t care to buy the albums. When Revenge came out I was floored. Loved Gene’s songs and his rekindled interest in the band. Revenge is their best from that era to me.

I listen to ALL eras. The thing is four of these albums have a co-founder of the band missing in action, GENE! His presence is really the main factor why these albums aren't actually better albums than make-up albums. I totally believe that they would be.
