King of Hearts

Post by The Silver Spoon »

So I was just turning 15 when hot in the shade was released. King of hearts was my go to song every night after school.

Loved the intro and for the time in the late 80s the verse was so cool. Then the chorus....ouch.

Listening to it even today the potential of this song is amazing - but the chorus sucks so badly. My guess is with another writer just to do the chorus and make it more anthemic this could have been a massive hit and a staple in the kiss catalogue ( and the cultural hard rock catalogue of the late 80s)

Any thoughts?

What's wrong with the chorus?

Yeah, I think it's a weird song. The intro is a variation on the intro to 'Mamma Mia' by ABBA and the verse is super familiar too (maybe 'Starry Eyes' by the Crüe?). I love the super pop pre-chorus but the chorus falls totally flat.

The problem with HITS, for me, is that all the songs sound like overthought pastiches of 'hit songs' without having any real character or depth of their own. Hence I've never connected with it, except 'Little Caesar' which I love.

I think it’s great as is. It’s probably my favorite “deep cut” from the 80s. Well, actually second favorite after Million To One.

It's one of the better songs on the album, but i'd rate it in the middle of the pack in terms of all KISS songs. Even if my username was inspired by it ;)

Agreed, one of their very best from the Unmasked period, and the chorus is fantastic. Should of been the 1st single from the album.
This one and Forever are the only decent songs on this album

I agree that “King Of Hearts” should have been released as a single/video. Good song!

Bad chorus on an otherwise great song.

No issue with the chorus for me. I think the whole song is great. All that holds it back is the lacklustre production.

Was just thinking about this today, such a strong song with a weak chorus. I feel the same about "You Love Me to Hate You".

I heard the "Mama mia" lick when I first heard it in '89. Not sure if it was intentional or not.

I like the song, but like a lot of Paul songs in that album, it feels like they were written for a solo project. That said, besides Read My Body, all of his songs on that album are solid, so I don’t get all the hate for the album. Even Gene has a few solid tunes on here. Perhaps it’s just that they aren’t bona fide KISS songs and sound too much like they could be on a solo album.

I think it's a really great song and had to listen back to it. The one thing it really should benefit from is a better mix - especially the background-vocals in the chorus is way to prominent.

Probably my favorite song off the album. I dig the Eric Carr trade off vocals "I go crazy" "when she touches" always thought that was cool.

This and Love Me to Hate You are my go to tracks.

The verses sound too derivative of Bon Jovi’s ‘Runaway’ IMO.

It's an odd transition between the sugary pop bridge into the chorus. It seemed a bit forced and doesn't flow well (to my ears).

Fantastic song just as is. My fave off the HITS album. In their top-ten non-makeup songs IMO.

I love everything about King Of Hearts. I guess the counterpoint in the chorus is jarring to some, but I always thought that it made the song unique and awesome.

Totally, even down to the lyrical style.

I mostly like the song though. The pre-chorus is awesome, the "shining like a jewel tonight" bit is good. But something about the chorus and especially the backing vocals doesn't send the song to the heights it should. I don't really like the melodies going in the first part. It's still one of the few songs I like on the album overall.

I was 14 upon HITS release and KOH was one of my favs right out of the gate. It’s held up well over time. You Love me to Hate You is also another standout track.

I think King of Hearts and Love Me To Hate You are the sleeper gems of HITS.

Besides Forever, Rise To It, Little Caesar and Hide Your Heart

Man, with a little trimming they really coulda had a much stronger album, I think. There's good stuff there....

Good song.

They should do a medley of King of Hearts King of the Nightime World and King of the Mountain.
