Tuesday, May 23, 2006 6:21:02 PM - Japanese "Rock The Nation Live!" Review...
Japanese fans are often treated to bonus items in and on their domestic releases, as a method that has been suggested
provides an incentive for purchasing those higher-priced rather than cheaper imports. For example, the domestic version
of "KISS Symphony" sells for ¥ 6,248 versus 4,925 for the import on one popular Japanese vendor's site. That's $56
versus $44.23 by today's exchange rate!

Economics and math aside, why would anyone outside of Japan be interested in their domestic "Rock The Nation Live!" DVD
release? Simple, it includes a 3" CD that features three additional songs recorded during the "Rock The Nation" tour in
2004, but not included on the US or other international versions. The songs: "King Of The Night Time World," "All The
Way," and "Psycho Circus." Tracks 1 & 3 recorded live at Virginia Beach, VA on July 25, 2004. Track 2 recorded live at
Bristow, VA (Washington DC) July 24, 2004. In comparrison with the "Instant Live" recordings of this material, very
little, if anything at all was apparently done to the recordings apart from them having a unified "audience track". That's
it. For most fans, having the Instant Live recordings of either of the two concert dates will sufice. And in the case of
"All The Way," having the Instant Live recording of the superior Concord, CA concert will be enough of that song. The 3" CD
is housed in a protective dust sleeve inside a printed slipcase. It looks good, making me tempeted to compile an audio-CD
of the full show for the car. Nah, already got the compilation of the "rare" live songs from that tour there. Oh, and
audio samples of these three songs are on the audio page...

The first noticeable difference between the US and Japanese versions (at least my copies) is the quality and contrast of the
printing. On the slipcases the color of the American version is washed out while the Japanese version is vivid. The "2 DVD Set"
notice is at the top, rather than the bottom. Both share the silver embossed KISS logo. Apart from the US version having
a UPC barcode, the two slip covers are nearly identical. Once you get the digipak housing out of the slipcase, the same
printing quality differences are obvious. The outsides of the digipaks share the same differences as the slip-covers. The
insides and screen-prints on the DVDs are also the same.

Both include a 12-page booklet. Again, the quality of print and vividness of color are the only mayor differences, though
the US version is printed on better paper stock than the rather flimsy Japanese stuff. Also included in the Japanese
version is a 8-page Japanese language biography and liner notes booklet.
Apart from that the Japanese version comes with a massive "obi" with the contents and track titles translated into
Japanese. It indicates a price of ¥ 4,935 ($44.37) - You'll certainly pay more than that to get this item outside of
Japan. My invoice from CD Japan indicates that I paid ¥ 6550 including EMS
postage. That's essentially $58.89 for a 3" CD whose contents is sure to circulate in collector's circles shortly. The
DVD appears to be region free, as I had no problem playing it on hardware that has been verified to choke on other
region's DVDs. Amusingly, the DVD even has the standard FBI warning at the beginning, totally pointless in Japan (and
elsewhere for that matter. Is it worth it? That's for the collector's brain to decide... «Post A Comment»
Tuesday, May 23, 2006 4:50:04 AM - New "old" KISS Footage airs...
Last night, as a part one of VH1's "Heavy: The History of Heavy Metal" rockumentary, "Welcome To My Nightmare," several
"new" previously unaired classic KISS clips were broadcast. KISS were the fourth band featured during the show, following
Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper. Clips included material from Valencia, CA, May 1978, originally filmed for
"KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park" concert sequences, and what appeared to be a new "Return Of KISS" tour pro-shot.
Perhaps more interesting were what appeared to be new pro-shot 1975 and 1977 shows, possibly Portland and Los Angeles
respectively. No doubt, some of the video collecting pros will uncover the details of these clips soon. Both Ace Frehley
and Peter Criss were interviewed for the show, along with Gene and Paul... «Post A Comment»

everyone's surprise, Richie was joined onstage by none other than Ace Frehley! The place went wild as Richie and Ace

Monday, May 15, 2006 7:34:09 AM - Gene, The 500's frontman + More...

(LARRY PAPKE / Associated Press file photo)
(From: IndyStar; David Lindquist) "You may have shaken a fist in joy or shaken a fist in disgust when Gene Simmons was hired to promote the Indy Racing League. Or you may have shaken your head in bewilderment.
Whatever the response, the notorious rock star makes people pay attention -- which is why Simmons says he's up to the task
of generating interest in a sport that continues to struggle for a mainstream identity. As a member of Kiss, Simmons has portrayed "the Demon" for more than 30 years. He spits fake blood during concerts, wags an abnormally long tongue and
professes an attraction for "every woman who walks the face of the earth. But as the partner in a marketing firm, he has worked since January to make political, corporate and fan connections for the racing league that will present the 500-Mile Race on May 28 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
If people have a problem with Simmons being affiliated with a fixture of wholesome American culture, it's OK with him.
"There's no such thing as good news and bad news," Simmons says. "There's only news. You're either important enough and
you become the water cooler conversation, or you're nobody and you don't count. "All I care about is that people talk about Indy. Wake up in the morning and talk about it. Even if it's 'Ah, that bloated, fat Gene Simmons -- what does he know about stuff?' Good. You're talking about it." Love him or hate him, the P.T. Barnum of rock 'n' roll is hyping the 90th running of the Indy 500. Marketing background
Simmons' track record with Kiss reflects a knack for spreading the word. From credit cards to caskets, more than 2,500
varieties of merchandise have featured the group's logo. "He likes to say Kiss is a band, but more than a band, it's a brand," says Mike Ringham, who was hired in October as the Indy Racing League's vice president of marketing. The IRL
wouldn't say how much it is paying Simmons Abramson Marketing, a Los Angeles-based company headed by Simmons and former
Pee-wee Herman manager Rich Abramson, or how long the company is under contract. So far, Simmons has provided "I Am
Indy" as both a slogan for the league and a song that's piped through loudspeakers at IRL events. And regarding the "IRL" abbreviation, Simmons says it sounds like a disease or a stodgy corporation. Instead, he refers to the league, its
schedule, the 500 and the city as "Indy." The 56-year-old fits the description of wide-eyed fan when marveling about
track speeds that exceed 220 mph. "Rock stars in rockets" is another of his catch phrases. Simmons acknowledges the budding celebrity of drivers such as Danica Patrick and defending Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon. He insists anyone possessing the skill and courage to drive in the league deserves a spotlight. "If you look at our drivers, they really are rock stars," Simmons says. "If they weren't driving Indy cars, they'd be onstage trying to steal your girlfriend. Well, it would be different in the case of Danica."
Family life. The suggestion of sex is a predictable part of any conversation with Simmons. In a 2002 autobiography, the
bass player claimed he's had more than 4,000 female partners -- so far. Meanwhile, he's maintained a relationship with
actress Shannon Tweed since 1983. They have two children, and their home life is chronicled on the A&E cable television
series "Family Jewels." "I don't hide the fact that I have a fantastic life," Simmons says. "People don't understand that
I can be happily unmarried to the same girl for 23 years and make no apologies." Because of a Kiss show scheduled May 25
in Las Vegas, Simmons won't get to Indianapolis until two days before the 500. But he promises to make the pre-race rounds.
"I'll be everywhere and do everybody," he says. League executive Ringham characterizes Simmons as "a very interesting
individual" and applauds the rock star's outspoken opposition to drug and alcohol abuse. The 2004 race champion, Buddy
Rice, figures that if the league had an issue with Simmons' persona, he wouldn't have been hired as a consultant. "No
matter what, he's going to attract somewhat of a different crowd," Rice says. "I think that's good for everybody
involved."
Fishers resident Keith Leroux oversees the official Web site for Kiss, Kissonline.com. "I don't think Gene's outlook on
marriage pertains even to a lot of Kiss fans or a lot of Kiss band members," Leroux says. "But he's Gene. One thing I've
always liked about him is that he does things his own way, regardless of what other people think." As evidenced by 1970s polls that ranked Kiss as both the most loved and most hated rock band, the musician-actor-entrepreneur has a charisma
that attracts and repels. "I am arrogant," Simmons says. "I'm responsible to myself for my happiness. I don't look to
anybody else. I've never borrowed a dime, and I'm not looking for a handout. I live my life my way. "I want Indy, with
all due respect, to have that kind of arrogance -- this kind of pride in what it is." When Simmons is modest, he credits
Kiss fans for his success and he refers to Abramson and himself as "two more horses hitched onto the ride" of marketing
the Indy Racing League.
Rather than being a famous name connected to the sport, Simmons says his real work is making contacts with government
officials in host cities and making pitches to potential corporate sponsors. Abramson brought NBA star Carmelo Anthony
into the league as a sponsor for Hemelgarn Racing and rookie driver P.J. Chesson, a noted free spirit who counts Simmons
as a mentor. Ringham reports that TV ratings have slightly improved for all three races of the young season when
compared with a year ago. He says the accomplishments of Simmons Abramson Marketing will be measured by the amount
of business the company brings to the league and the amount of publicity generated across a 14-race schedule. "Gene
is remarkably good -- and maybe brazen would be a better word -- about picking up the phone and calling people," Ringham
says. "It's really quite interesting to hear about people returning his calls. Most everybody returns Gene Simmons'
calls, for some reason"... «Post A Comment»

KISS Army Planners Announce Initial Timeline For Rally at The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame $1.00 Fundraising Campaign
The KISS Army March committee is proud to announce the initial details surrounding the events and activities planned for
Cleveland on August 5th, 2006. The event is also announcing that the American Cancer Society will receive 100% of the net
proceeds generated by the event. The event's purpose is to change the course of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation's
nomination and induction process, which has passed on KISS since they became eligible in 1999. The donation program to the
American Cancer Society came about as a result of Eric Carr's passing from cancer in 1991. Brian Harman, Regional
Development Director, with the American Cancer Society shared his view this way: "This is a great community event put on
by the KISS Army and the funds raised will help us KISS cancer goodbye." Donations are being requested through the group's
website at www.kissarmyunites.com. KISS fans are being asked to donate $1.00 to help the committee cover expenses and
raise money for the American Cancer Society. For every dollar you donate your name will be entered to win a personal
check signed by Eric Carr using his original name Paul Caravello. This drawing will be held at the KISS Army March
following the Eric Carr Tribute (need not be present to win). The personal check was donated by the family of Eric Carr.
Kim Rolfe and Kristine Connell, (two of the planners of the event, and in charge of merchandising) long time KISS fans

Saturday, May 13, 2006 10:04:51 AM - KISS European Tour '76 Anniversary...
It was 30 years ago today that KISS embarked on their first tour outside of North America, performing at Manchester's Free
Trade Hall with English band Stray opening. The European tour had originally been planned for October 1975, but had been
delayed. Playing 17 dates during their two-week visit the tour went mostly without incident. Shortly afterwards the
"Destroyer" album reached #22 on the UK album charts, the first KISS album to chart in the UK. "Alive!," soon followed
making it to #49.

tour of the "Old World" serves to remind how neglected Europe has been, in terms of touring, in recent years. Sure there
are strong economic and other reasons, though I'd love to have an excuse to visit friends and family in the UK and also
catch a KISS show on my home soil! One can hope... «Post A Comment»

Over the weekend Gene announced some of his new non-KISS related projects, including "Gene Simmons Bikini Car Wash" and

the car-washing business Gene has previously considered "Erotic Car Wash," "Topless Car Wash," "Nude Car Wash," and
"Girls, Girls, Girls Car Wash." Several of these trademarks are "dead."
Other interesting Gene trade marks include "Gene Simmons Groupies," "BBKO" (Beats Bouts Knock-Outs), "International Fight

may ponder has been supersceeded by "Sexercise"), and "The Symposium Of Success." Gene's covering all the bases...
