It took me a while to discover this gem, but I really have to say I absolutely love this song. It's got a great vibe and yes, it doesn't sound like the usual KISS stuff. But who cares :) it's really a great song and I enjoy it very much! Maybe it's good that Peter sings it, that way it's already a bit separate from most of the KISS stuff anyway.

As a side note Dirty Livin was a top 40 hit in Germany (#25)

I always liked this track and it has one of Ace's underrated best solos in my opinion.
So agree, but for me the real Ace moment that shines is the bridge that's repeated twice, with that one-note thing he does outside the solo. Just one note bent to hell until it weeps with feedback. I think that's one of the most EMOTIONAL solo spots in any KISS song ever. It's gorgeous and really hit a chord with me the moment I heard it as a kid. I always just wait for that solo moment when listening to the song. Assuming Poncia came up with that chord progression, as it was nowhere to be found on the demo, and it gives the song such a huge lift from the boring original arrangement.

Also interesting that Peter's last words on the song as it finally fades out are, "Why don't you set me free?"

I think it's great. I've got a 5 hour drive ahead of me tonight and can see it starting with Dynasty.

The demo sounds like it could've been a hit. I'm glad it's not like that on Dynasty though.

Your thought isn't strange. The perspective is spot on and I love that song.

I didn't like Dynasty at the time. Now I think it's a really good pop album.

Thanks for this post (even thought it's recycled), this is why I come here, not all the bickering about issues with the current band.

Thank you!

Nice song, Nice álbum. Was my first KISS album, around 1980, if you listen the sound, and production, íts better than most of today recordings. All four sounds clear and powerfull. One of my favourites albums. Ace did great job and Paul sing espectacular. Wondering Few more songs for the álbum.

It becomes increasingly more apparent to me [discovering these things long after the facts] that KISS was really good at being something other than KISS when they wanted to be.

I question his choice of tones. The guitars were way too thin on the albums he produced. Way too little low end on everything in general.
Yes,I agree. Why he decided to EQ everything to have all mids and no bottom and little top end is beyond my comprehension.

Maybe the record company didn't want it to sound too disco.

Fantastic song in just about every way. Great vocal by Peter, as ever. Love the punchy bass. Guitar tones are great - not too heavy but nice and crispy, which is just right for this song. Beautiful guitar break. Excellent harmonies.

I just wish that they could have kept the momentum from the first side of Dynasty going when they reached the second side of the album. Side 2 pales in comparison to Side 1.

Dynasty was my first album ever (not counting early childhood stuff e.g. fairy tale audio drama etc.). I must have been 10 or 11... I had no clue how albums were created; I assumed the band just played their songs live without audience while the tape run and that was it. I noticed that the drums in Peter's own song were somewhat more rumbly than in the other songs. "It must be hard to sind and drum simultaneously", I figured.

Great song for jumping rope. I don't hear any Kiss in it whatsoever, but I think it's one of the better songs on the record.

Wow I'd never heard this demo before either. Surprisingly disco coming from Peter. Stan's influence perhaps?

Someone call the DOCTAH, to ease all the pain !!!

I can hear the jukebox poundin' out loud !

It’s a great tune.

The whole vibe of it makes me feel truly wild. Sunglasses at night. It takes me on a trip to ‘78, maybe at Studio 54 with Ace & Peter going off the rails! Drugs, orgies, drunk driving. (I don’t condone drunk driving haha—just saying...truly wild rock star/ pop star/ celebrity/ 1970s shit!!)

I love it LOUD !

Similar reaction here.As a kid, I didn't hate it, but I thought it wasn't as fun as Ace's songs.
Some time in the past decade, it's hit me that Dirty Livin' is a really well written, well delivered song! The lyrics are pretty heavy, for a Kiss song, too. "People all around me lettin' me bleed" and all that.

By all rights, I should HATE this song based on my musical taste, but goddamnit there's just SOMETHING about it that I love! Every time I listen to it I tap my foot and bob my head up and down, LOL! It just has some kind of magic to it, LOL!

I love this track! One of my all-time top 5 KISS songs.

Dirty Livin' is about as funky as KISS has ever gotten, with "Almost Human" and "Easy As It Seems" coming in close behind.

As the last track featuring all originals before the breakup it weirdly encapsulates so many things I love about KISS.
That four on the floor is what gives the track it's balls! You can hear Gene and Paul's Wicked Lester-style backgrounds on the chorus.
Ace's solo is pitch perfect and that infamous bass line by Gene is undeniable. Fantastic rhythm section.

You gotta love that call and response between Peter and Paul at the end: "It's gettin to me..."

Hats off to Vini Poncia, as here is a producer who did his job and turned in a great record. He pulled some great, unique performances out of the band.
