Has your opinion changed? Which albums are better/worse NOW!
Sometimes our impressions or opinions of things can change over time, sometimes a lot, sometimes slightly.
First impressions of a new album is an interesting beast. Usually my opinions of something stays fairly consistent over time, but not always. Sometimes you can appreciate something more now; than your first impression. Sometimes the opposite; you realise that it wasn’t really that good to begin with.
Which KISS albums are much better or much worse in your opinion NOW; than when you FIRST heard it at the time. How much has your opinion on these changed?
I’ll give a couple. Crazy Nights and Hot In The Shade I remember thinking were pretty good! Not great, even then, but pretty decent, very competitive with what was happening! Now of course I see that at least half of both those albums are utter crap! A few decent tracks on both … at best!
The other side? I’ll say Sonic Boom. I gave it a few listens on release, and shelved it thinking, try hard, formulaic mostly nonsense. Ultimately quite disappointing.. I recently gave it another decent go, and warmed to it more. Not a great album by any stretch; but really – not too bad! Fairly even album without the shockers on some of the 80’s albums. Not too many highs, and the rearranged Ace solos is kinda pathetic...but....... decent okay album and a solid 6/10…

I like Gene's and Peter's solo albums quite a lot now, which wasn't the case when I first heard them.
I don't love Rock and Roll Over and Love Gun as much as I used to, but they're still very good albums.
Everything else has pretty much stayed the same.

Unmasked: While it is still very close to the bottom, I like it a little more than I used to.
Creatures of the Night: Do not like it as much as I used to.
Lick it Up: Do not like it as much as I used to.
Crazy Nights: Never liked it, but like it even less now.
Revenge: Only marginally liked it originally and like it much less now.
Monster: Liked it originally but now find it kinda MEH.

I like Dynasty and Lick It Up a lot more than I did when I was younger. Sonic Boom and Monster aren't as well liked as when they first came out to me. I still love some songs from those albums, but overall the albums are good, but nothing more. Modern Day Delilah is far and above better than anything else on Sonic Boom. Overall, EVERY KISS album has, at the very least, a couple great songs on them.....even the albums that are considered below average. Obviously I'm not talking about albums like their debut, Destroyer, etc....those are great pretty much front to back...but albums like HITS and Unmasked, which lots of people consider to be not their best work, still have great songs on them.

When I was younger I didn't like Peter's solo very much. I now holder it in higher regard than Gene's. No massive highlights on Pete's disc, but nothing so awful as some of Gene's tunes. Easy Thing should have been Beth II. Tunnel of Love, True Confessions are just terrible IMO. I don't love Man of 1,000 Faces much either.
I held Love Gun higher than RARO. I have since switched back.

Very few. I continue to like the albums I always liked and ignore the ones I don't. I'm not sure where Sonic Boom and Monster fit into that category as I can't remember them.

Re: Has your opinion changed? Which albums are better/worse
Revenge & Creatures have lost their edge, in recent years, for me. After listening to them for many years, as an adult, I realize that the songs, though heavy-sounding, which was what appealed to me as a kid, are not as well crafted as Dynasty and Unmasked. The latter two albums I dismissed as pop crap, but in recent years, I purchased them and have changed my mind now that my ears and tastes have matured.

Dressed To Kill Through Love Gun...I like them less...I'm less forgiving of the filler and stinkers.
Dynasty...I dig that one more.
Monster...I really appreciated at first, but it didn't age well at all.

I liked monster when the album was new..but it quickly went into the neverplayed discs. I did play the album recently, and it is just so dull , slow , and shitty sounding...awful
Revenge never kicked ass like we were told it did,lol..
Same thing..only that it kicks ass in the guitar
sound department.!!
Overrated..
My opinion on animalize, asylum, Cn and most of Hot in the shade still stands..awful

Re: Has your opinion changed? Which albums are better/worse
Funnily enough, none of my opinions about any KISS albums have changed for the better with one exception, Gene Simmons '78. I didn't care for it in 1978 because I was expecting 9 or 10 "demon" songs. However now I really appreciate/enjoy the "softer" side of Gene and I dig all the Beatlesque tunes on his solo album! As for the rest of the albums, my opinion has either not changed at all or has changed for the worst.

I love all the KISS albums, every single one.... Except Sonic Boom & that unlistenable Monster
I will admit though that I do like Sonic Boom more now than 8 years ago. Still tons of duds, but some are pretty good.

As far as albums go....maybe Crazy Nights. My opinion on it as a whole hasn't dramatically changed, but I can at least appreciate it for what it is a little more than I used to.
Now if you were to discuss songs, that would be totally different. I can name several songs where my opinion has changed over the years.

"Unmasked"...I didn't like it when I was a kid. Especially after hearing "Back In Black", "Women & Children" and "Blizzard Of Ozz".
After hearing the "Unmasked" tribute album I had a bit more respect for it. I'm hoping the harder version of "Naked City" (if it exists) makes
Gene's upcoming box set.

I used to totally & completely hate the entire Crazy Nights album, but I give it another shot every once in a while. I still don't like any of the Paul songs from that record but the Gene songs have grown on me some over the years...especially Hell or High Water
So even though Crazy Nights is still not only my least favorite Kiss album but also the only one I don't really like that much, I have to admit I like it a little more than I used to

My feelings on the albums have stayed pretty consistent over the past 3 decades. But Lick It Up, Animalize, and Revenge were albums I liked right out of the gate but within a few months they kinda tanked. Monster I thought was okay but don't really dig anything on that album anymore. I like a couple of songs on SB more than I did when it came out, MDD, YIK, and SY. Besides that its all pretty much the same to me. So far.

Generally, I'm not a fan of "metal" bands like AC/DC, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, etc (one reason why I'm no fan of Revenge), but... That doesn't mean I gravitate towards disco or shitty-ass bubble gum pop. Some of the songs on Unmasked are okay, and I even really like Torpedo Girl in a kitschy kinda way. A whole album of bubble gum pop from a band like KISS is just laughable to me.67321 wrote:I don't like any of those albums.Eddie Van Hazel wrote:"Unmasked"...I didn't like it when I was a kid. Back in the day, AC/DC was just as metal as Priest. Whatever someone wants to classify them, I couldn't give a shit less. That genre, whatever the fuck it is.LordThurisaz wrote:Since when has AC/DC been considered metal?Crimson Harpoon wrote:Generally, I'm not a fan of "metal" bands like AC/DC, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, etc (one reason why I'm no fan of Revenge), but... I loved Lick It Up in the 80's, but as I got older I recognized the half assed riffs on the last 3 songs, the pathetic vocal melodies on all three of those, and the laughable lyrics. Of course, Gimme More has lyrics so bad that they ruin that song as well. It really is a mediocre album propped up by 4 great songs.

Interesting that quite a few are saying that Monster is worse for them now. So obviously it was liked quite a bit out of the gate?
In my OP above I put Sonic Boom as working for me a little better now than upon release. Monster doesn't quite work the same way for me. Besides HOH I thought it was decidedly weak. Funnily enough I gave it another spin today to see what it might do. I'll have to concede that it was a tiny bit better for me NOW! But not like SB - I just think that's a stronger album. Monster has some real stinkers on there... The production doesn't help either.. SB is more even, and the mix sounds better.

funny. i remember doing a flyby here when Monster came out, people were raving that Hell or Hallelujah was such a GREAT GREAT GREAT song. once again, i found myself on the opposite end of the spectrum. seemed too forced to me. still does. its a song i dont look forward to hearing when i listen to that one.

While I find Monster to be equally mediocre all the way through, Hell or Hallelujah is the one that I find to be far worse than the rest. It's just so clunky & disjointed sounding to me. When I heard it as the lead single, I was extremely worried. They really did pick the shittiest song on the album for the single. I doubt you ever heard me praising the song, because I hated it straight outta the gate.Klankh79 wrote:funny. i remember doing a flyby here when Monster came out, people were raving that Hell or Hallelujah was such a GREAT GREAT GREAT song. once again, i found myself on the opposite end of the spectrum. seemed too forced to me. still does. its a song i dont look forward to hearing when i listen to that one.

Very few. The only changes I would say are-
Revenge - I could never get into it in its first 10 years of release, then one day it just hit me. Unholy, Thou shall not, Paralyzed have become some of my fave Kiss songs.
Monster - I thought it was great when I heard it first, but recently I've played it and it did basiccly nothing for me.

Worse:
Unmasked. Liked it a lot when it came out.
Now, I think it's too poppy and lightweight.
Revenge. Thought it was strong back in the day.
Now I realize there are very few really good songs.
Better:
Music from The Elder. Didn't understand it at first. Now I love it.
Lick It Up. I was thrown by them taking the makup off. Didn't like it too much. Now I realize this is their last great album.
Carnival of Souls. Hated it at first. Think it's pretty okay now, even though I rarely listen to it.

Interesting question. If I had to pick one I'd say Animalize. I had just turned 14 a couple of weeks before its release in Sept. 1984 and LOVED it! Today, time hasn't been kind to half of it. Then it was great, now it's merely good. Three out of five stars.

Yea, I was 11 and LOVED Animalize, too. Well, even then I wasn't that crazy about Gene's songs, but the album as a whole, the energy and aura of that year, the attitude, the costumes, the pics in the magazines, the live concert video ... it was all just so cool to me.Mr. Kiss wrote:Interesting question. I still really like the album, but it's not as strong as Creatures and Lick It Up. I still like it more than Asylum and Crazy Nights, though.

Even on the albums I hate from the band, like CN and HITS,there are a couple songs that I like while hating the rest...lol.
However on COS,there is not a minute of anything I can get into. I know a lot of you love it,but I can't keep it on for 30 seconds. Again,I'm biased because I hate that style of music and the band,to me,has never sounded more UN Kisslike than then. Even when they've chased trends before...you could hear that KISS spirit. To me,COS just blows.

Again,I'm biased because I hate that style of music and the band,to me,has never sounded more UN Kisslike than then. Even when they've chased trends before...you could hear that KISS spirit. To me,COS just blows.

For me, CoS is what KISS should have sounded like from Hotter than Hell forward. Not saying I don't like a lot of what they did, but I see KISS more as that dark, gritty, heavy band that was the first two albums. Pretty much everything from Dynasty thru Revenge are albums that I can pick three or four songs from while not particularly caring for the rest. IMHO, Alice in Chains-KISS is FAR superior to KC & The Sunshine Band-KISS.LoveGun77 wrote:Even on the albums I hate from the band, like CN and HITS,there are a couple songs that I like while hating the rest...lol.

Music From The Elder has definitely grown on me. I think it's a rather solid album, but a lackluster KISS album; same with Dynasty.
On the other hand, Destroyer, which I used to worship when I was a kid, has fallen from its pedestal in more ways than one. Don't get me wrong, seeing I still like it, but when I look at it in light of what came before and immediately after, it comes across as overly pretentious and overproduced.
For some reason, I find myself listening to Creatures of the Night fairly often nowadays.

Smashes. Bought it when it came out, didn't think much of it.
Now I like how the "remixes" sound. Especially the drums although I always suspected they just had Bruce and Eric re-do some/if not all of the drums and guitar parts.

I do like the remix of Love Gun. I never really cared for that song, but I like the ST&H version.sj_74 wrote:Smashes. Bought it when it came out, didn't think much of it.

This was always my impression as well, especially when it comes to the drums.sj_74 wrote:Smashes. Bought it when it came out, didn't think much of it.

Crazy Nights!
I think I played that damn album right up and beyond the release of HITS. When I was 17 or 18, that album was MEGA. It wiped the floor with everything that came before it (other than Lick It Up - I'm not completely stupid!).
Now, I don't think I've played it front to back in about 7 years.
I'm getting excited for the 30th anniversary of it though. It'll bring a lot of good memories come back. I know Bruce is planning to celebrate it as well. But yeah, it's not an album I spin much at all in later years - but at the time, wow, it was amazing.

I like Peters solo more and Genes and Pauls along with Hotter Than Hell a little less.... Also Asylum, Unmasked, Destroyer and Lick it Up to me now sounds much better.

Meh, my opinion will be unpopular. But I first got into them when I was young and they played on MTV unplugged. So that is my favorite album.
